eS driving down Pacific Coast Highway last night. On being gobbled by a new steel grey "T" I waved as usual, just as our eyes wandered vet to a white De Tomaso Mangusta smiling at us from Bob Challman’s Lotus works just south of Manhattan Beach Blvd. So, after milling off some of those new brake pads Herr Schneider had just installed, we met just at the door to Challman’s. Enter, stage right, the Mangusta, II, 750 clams of car. Enter, stage center, two Porsche owners(part Porsche owners with the Bank, that is) hardly in the market for II, 750 clams of car, but with big eyes. Enter, stage left, after a short wait to heighten the tension, Bob Challman, proprietor emeritus. Ready to lay it on us, we thought, about the Mangusta. I ndeed it was not to be the Mangusta, but some insight into a cat who has been large among the screamy ragtop sportscar set for years, a Porsche seller in the early going, and friend and racer with the biggies. You know, Caroll, Dan, Ritchie, and so on. The interesting things were his questions about the marketplace. What can you and I afford to drive today if we want to rip it up a little in anything from across the seas.? And, what does the demise of the small manufacturers, ie Shelby into Ford, De Tomaso into Ford, would you believe Porsche into VW, really mean to the future? What Bob says it means is epitomized in two cars. First the 914 Porsche, and second the new De Tomaso/Ford Pantera. A third ingredient in this alchemy decidedly affecting both cars is related to those crash films we saw at last month’s meeting: "How do you keep ’era together when dropped from a helicopter, or when dropped on by a helicopter?" First of all, there is nothing Bob.would like better for the sports car set, than a neo-speedster.About 1700 poundsand 100 horsepower with gobs of handling, thankyou. And, as a fair minded man, it matters not under what marque. He had high hopes for the gl4.But gawd, 2300 pounds? And 85 horsepower? And bigger than a TR-6, not to mention a breadbox? But then it had to be built around an already designed Karmann Ghia tub because that had been given the OK in some very expensive crash tests, right. Well, I don’t

Wo

itkn°W’isfoodbUtforl recallthought.that being the essence of Mr. Challman!s remarks. And The structural rules from the Feds are so tight, and expensive to pass, that basic auto structural shapes and design must be limited to concepts proven by the big corporations for economic reasons. That doesn’t say much for a sparkling future of neat automotive exotica. But, what, you say, of the new exotic Pantera, a joint Ford-De Tomaso venture? To be sold, it says here, by Bob Challman, who will know how to make it run right, and some "selected" Lincoln Mercury dealers, who probably won’t. And thanks to the wonders of modrun(si~:) science, Mr. Ford will bring us this car at about 8000 bills. 8000 bills’. Egad, they’ve almost undercut the lowest priced 911, with a sexy Italian thoroughbred that will be decidedly faster. But, Bob wonders if they’ll ever get it in the country. The styling may not permit enough structural rigidity, without a lot of testing. And when you see the seats, you’ll know why it’s down to 8000 oysters. Sweet mother of Pearl, right out of the Pep Boys wish book. The point to all this is, the rules are so stiff now, the little guy can’t afford to build a screamy little car for $3500. I mpossible. Porsche, the 9.14, the German Mark, and the gilT have just proved you can’t do it for $6000, even. The new Datsun GT? Maybe. But then Datsun’s a big outfit again, right? And at the other end of the bigness ladder, Ford/De Tomaso may not be able to get the Pantera in under $10K. This means $4500 Boss 302’s for us all. Bleah. Keepyour 356 folks, you’ll never see the likes again. I’m anxious to talk to Bob some more. He invited me back for a ride in a Lotus "Breadwagon". It’s a 17001b mid-ship engine high performance two seater for under $5000, for all you 914 fans. I’ll not buy one, but the ride will be great. Bob said he’d even buy me a Swedish Coffee, in spite of the Porsche Pusher Patch on my jacket. More later, have a great month.

of the work and some impressive results of their endations to car ~nufacturers.. Respectfully submitted, G.

Leg 3 proved to be fairly exciting as 2 cars were held up by a long funeral train(presumably reserved for der Seerauber by those poor souls already afoul on Leg 2--ed). Two checkpoints were located in the same place. And the back roads were filled with "tractor drivers". Of course there was the checkpoint crew who held a pitch battle with the local farmers who felt the exhaust noise and fumes were not doing the oranges any good(have you ever seen a deaf orange?--ed). Danke to Nick Friesen and George Gedeon who just smiled, And of course to Curt Kuebler who seconded Ron Ramage’s

motion on what to do with leg 4. Danke to Ron Ramage who supplied the legal releases and car numbers; Corky Kirk and his crew: Dean Kirk, Paul Wiley, and Larry Ledoux. Danke to Jeff Horton who helped make up the rallye and manned the start and the finish. And danke for all of those who enjoyed the event.

The secret meeting of the Board of Directors will occur at Lynn Bockemohle’s abode on the 20th of April. Please call Lynn if you are interested in attending. Board Members need not apply. The meeting is open to any member wishing to participate in the mysterious machinations of our leaders.

And those who did make it? Well the results are below. Two protests were filed--one by the Vice President and the other by Curt Kuebler. After considering all protests, the winners were named, As a side note, leg 4 was completely withdrawn for consideration since all traffic on the island was re-routed due to the hordes and "Rd" was erroneously spelled out "Road". Those who did finish leg 4 had a nice ride on the ferry.

TECHNICAL ARTICLE OF THE MONTH by Corky Kirk "Don’t Turn the Key Off Too Fast" or "How to Hot Wire a 912" Some people create their own problems-consider what happened today, Went out to the 912 to drive an associate to lunch, and found the key wouldn’t go in the ignition, and all of a sudden the radio came on. Upon inspection, it appeared the ignition was to the left, or in the accessory"on" position but without the key being in the lock--oh woe! I can only surmise what happened; in turning the Porsche off and climbing out, I must have turned the key slightly pas__t the "off" position and gotten the key out of the lock all at the same time. When reentering the cockpit and trying to insert the key, the lock moved further to the accessory side and denied the entry of the key-oh more woe .... So now comes the trickey part-how to get the lock off the dashboard, how to hot wire it to get started and off to the locksmith for repair. Here’s one way to do it. First--take the church key from the glove compartment, (you don’t have one there?-- put one in now! The kind you open beer cans with-the old style cans, that is) with the beer can tip ~-~/--w;:~ find one of three holes on the outside the plastic escutcheon plate around the igedge of ~ lock. (this is in lieu of a sparmer wrench). Start nition ~ the plate--f6 unscrewing by turning czunter-clockwise (like taking the top off a jar of pickles) maybe you better reach up underneath the dash and hold the lock as you get about 4 turns or so-the detent will

hold it O.K. for the first few turns ....... O.K., now you have the lock in your left hand, and down below the

~ \ "x~

dash it comes, so you can see all ~N3K the wires on the back. There !Tc:~2uveflffoN are all kinds of terminals and stuff there, but look closely .... stamped in the black plastic and along ¯ side / / .~ {4oag__~

~o-~~ "~--~_~ ’a~Sa’~d~ p~.

of the terminals, there are numbers and letters .... ah ha---get the paper and pencil and draw yourseIf a picture-Why? cause there

isn’t a wiring diagram in the 912 drivers book like there was in the 356 book--oh woe, woe, woe ....... Your t~cture should look like this: #15- 2 red wires cramp e #Pd 1-grey wire together . o,~ #50 l-large yellow /~ ~o "~ I other 1- small yellow ( t..~,~ -#30-1 red wire ! ~/~/~ O . =~]terminal 1-yellow!red 1 red/pink wire

Now here’s how you start the engine so’s you can drive to the locksmith. Take the double red wire from terminal 15 and push the connector into the un-used lug on terminal 30, and leave it. This turns on the ignition. Now take the large yellow from terminal 50 and touch it to terminal 30 to actuate the starter. When the engine catches, return the yellow to terminal 50. That should do it--to stop the engine, pull the double red off of Terminal 30. It would be easier (and cheaper) to take the ignition switch i__n to the locksmith, but he wil__l come out to the car. In either event, keep your wiring diagram so if he takes the switch out and tries to remember how it goes back together-you’ll know! (no woe)

All that’s left now is to put the wires back on the terminals, put the detent plate back over the switch shaft, and re-install in the dash panel. To give you an idea of the cost of this self imposed problem. the locksmith had my lock 5 minutes’ and I paid him $1.25 to get it back, good as new (no mo woe!) ......... Editors Note: You have now hot wired a ~orsche. Notice how easy it was?! Better lock your car up from now on. Over twenty Porsche autos are stolen in the U.S. each week.

Southern Fried. But S.F. or not, a bird in a bikini is still a bird in a bikini. Very little long hair on the male population. In fact most of the people in attendance were southern collegians starting Easter week early, PCA was there in force. About 100 years of the Marque, 4 rows deep, from 1955 to 914/4. Most of us were trying to hear what the 914 sounded like running. Once in awhile some very unPorsche like "futtling" sort of sound was emitted. Oh well, we’ll do a road test one of these day.s and get our smart remarks over with then.

given for numbers of spectators disturbed. Yes, Virginia, something the "Los Angelization of the World" didn’t introduce to Sebring. But give us a couple of years once this gets out and L.A. will organize it, right? "Degree of difficulty: .85/one 1.5 foot diameter flat rock target at 13 feet. Three tries." In tenyyears we’ll be on "Wide World of Sports" off weeks when there’s no surfing and Islip Speedway isn’t doing demolition derbies. Well, enough. If you wanted to know the complete standings at race end or just what broke on what Porsche or Who’s driving for whome or ... well read any buff book on the stands next month, or Autoweek last week and be sure and watch Wide World of Sports on Saturday. Sometimes I think the real winner was the WWS helicopter driver who tried to outrace Maria all day to get us a good picture. Me, oh I’m just looking forward to whatever’s "in" next year. And maybe by then I’ll know what a 914 sounds like, switch on.

wossisname wlfh twelve aJ:t

But let me say a few things about Sebring you won’t see in the other press: That’s what we’re here about. The dead or the near dead litter the place. It looked like the residue from Rex Reason and some well oiled Roman army in togas doing battle with the Hun or somebody. All manner of mousing went on under tents, in campers and just plain ou’t in front of gawd’n mom’n everybody. [ guess there was some grass around too, although it didn’t seem to be as evident as in some Southern California events. Lots of motorcycles. The most exciting part of the course? The car bridge over big bend, just out of the Esses. -fhe fuzz (generally first class by the way) had walkie-talkies, semaphore flags, and just plain hands to control traffic first one way and then the other over the bridge. The bridge being veEy steep one couldn’t see the other side and on a bike, it had to be turned on hard or you never saw the other side of the mountain. As the flow one way stopped, suddenly a flight of 30 or so airborne Yamaha’s, Harley’s, etc., came over the top from the other way. A credit to the gendarmes that nobody was kiIled. This plot was bound to get thicker though and it did as a three-wheel motorcycle goodie in the lead packed up his shifter just at the bottom of our side. Being at the lead, othe fuzz tried to stop that side. Only half stopped however. Somehow the squadron on the other side got GCA clearance to depart and the two groups, now airborne, met at the top. After a neo-,Battleof Britian and suitable clutter, everybody including the spectators, were shouted down and reminded of their questionable parentage. And it was some time and much arm waving, semaphore flagging, and walkie talkying before the braver started going over again. I haven’t mentioned the one thing I can almost guarantee you won’t find in any other media regarding Sebring. That was what was "in" this year. Not high style clothes or new hair fashion or colors or cars. No consistent patterns showed up in those fields. What showed up in the fields at Sabring were young gentlemen heeding Mother Natures earliest call amid large groups of spectators trackside. And not just once but between our circle of acquaintances we witnessed this now stylish endeavor many times. And not discreetly behind a tree, you understand. Points were apparently being 10
