presidential rhetoric We are looking for ideas. Your ideas. Ideas on events you would like to have, on technical meetings you would like to attend, on whatever interests you. I think many people are afraid to make suggestions for fear that someone will say, "That’s a great idea, now you do it - you make it happen." Sometimes a person suggesting an idea may have special talents or contacts that uniquely qualify him to implement his plan. And sometimes he won’t.

I’ll make a deal with you. If you’ll give the Board your suggestions, and if you don’t want to be appointed to head that activity, we won’t put pressure on you to do it. We’ll try to find another person or way to "make it happen". So, if you have some notions in the back of your head about what you or this club should be doing, don’t hold back. We need them. John

comment TELLING IT LIKE IT IS !!! Well, well, so you only had eight names on the ballot this November. This was to fill eight slots for directors. No point in even noting that there was no choice. Except, of course, write-ins. But do you really want "Mickey Mouse" as your director. My, wasn’t that intelligent and original of someone. Since the ballot results, one Board member has resigned (too busy) and we haven’t heard from another, either at the old/new director’s meeting or the Christmas dinner dance. Just think. Of the eight on the Board, two members from 1972 chose to serve again in 1973. Let’s see, two from eight leaves six. We have over 300 members plus family members in the club, and we can’t fill six slots. How many of you have bitched about actions taken by your Board. Been complaining about events? (Boy, if I was running that event rather than those dumb directors Mickey Mouse would do a better job.) Talkers!

That’s all, the lot of you.

Ron Rammage, in charge of nominations, could not get eight names together. George Gedeon and I spent two hours one evening calling people. Ziltch. Nothing. "I don’t have the time" or "Too many commitments" were the excuses. Why is it that the club needs someone or something done, it must call on the same people? They are just as busy, just as successful as you think you are. Or does Monday night football interfere!

Don’t you feel any responsibility toward your club? There are no self-made "cliques" in this club - only the clique that you yourself create by doing nothing. Are some people more Porsche-motivated than other people? Are members who cut their teeth on 356’s more loyal? Come on! Get the-lead out and do something for your club. Duane Alan

COMMENT ON COMMENT It occurs to me that the largest "clique" in PCA is the esoteric "Do Nothing Clan". They are so secretive about their actions that they won’t even associate with one another, much less an active member. Because their participation in the club seems always frustrated by the Fates (who, alternately, serve as their Board of Directors), I propose a unique method whereby they can escape the grasp of Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos: The next time you see a PCA badge, push down on the horn ring. If the horn sounds, everything is O.K. and you can look over smugly at your companion and say, "I belong to PCA". (If the horn didn’t sound either you weren’t in your Porsche or you should see your mechanic or both.) The next time you see a PCA badge, honk your horn, look over at your companion in mock distress and say, "Damn, there is a PCA meeting tonight (or whenever) and I am going to get the lead out and go!" The next time, "Double damn, there is a PCA event coming up and I am going to get the lead out, get the car ready and go!!" And so on. Leave it to the Fates to get you going. But don’t stay cooped up in your garage breathing carbon monoxide - get out and look for a PCA badge. Why, if carried to its logical conclusion, once you begin to see some badges and do something in this club you will soon want to be all eight directors at one time (except you’ll say "damn" too much). This will not only solve Duane’s problem, it will solve yours. Nobody really joins the "Do Nothing Clan", they just do nothing. And any clique that is lead by the Fates can’t be anything but blind. Eyes open? Ed.

december minutes Our general membership meeting was held on December 22 at the Windsor Ballroom in Los Angeles in conjunction with our annual Christmas party and dinner dance. Arrangements by Connie and John Bevan included shrimp cocktail, filet mignon and other delicacies which where enjoyed by nearly 90 members and their guests. The evening’s highlight was the drawing for doorprizes, which were supplied by dealerships, publishers and the club, itself. Everyone was given a ticket when they arrived and so the chance of winning a prize was equal. Following the drawing, participation and competition point winners for 1972 were presented trophies - as were the outgoing members of the Board of Directors. After all business was concluded and the new Board members were introduced, a four piece combo took over and members either joined in the dancing or visited with friends. The Board meeting was held on December 19 at the home of Duane Alan. Dale reported that he had checked with the school and that our meetings will have a "place" all year. Duane mentioned that he had all the coffee making equipment and that whoever had that duty in 1973 should contact him. Lewis was not present so no official financial report was made, but the consensus was that the club was in good shape economically. Corky was also missing and thus there were no exact membership figures. Ron reported briefly on activities planned for the coming year through the month of April, noting that the first event of the year was the trip to Death Valley. Bob reported that he would need two cars for tune up demonstrators at the tech meeting and found that volunteers were plentiful. After the officer reports, Duane introduced the new Board members which were present and the positions they would fill: John Kepler will be President; Edith Savage, Secretary; Tore Johnson, Membership Chairman and Paul Edwards, Editor. John discussed his ideas on the direction of the new Board and hoped he could do as credible a job as recent past presidents. One goal he mentioned was the elimination of non-participating members. On this same subject, Duane and G~orge proposed that they meet to draw up new by laws that would deal with this problem. Duane concluded that all Board members should attend all club functions and thereby set an example for the general membership. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned and the members enjoyed refreshments and a discussion of the year ahead. Respectfully submitted,

Paul Beam Secretary

next events JANUARY 19-20-21 DEATH VALLEY TOUR This weekend promises beautiful scenery and fast company, although if you did not make motel reservations through the club you will now have to make your own. There will be two caravans: one led by Duane Alan and leave from Denny’s on the San Bernardino Freeway in E1 Monte at 9 a.m. Friday morning and will spend two nights at Stove Pipe Wells Village in Death Valley; another led by Dale Boyd will leave from the same Denny’s at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening and will spend the first night at the Miracle City Motel in Ridgecrest before moving on to Stove Pipe Wells for Saturday night. Duane Alan has the complete itinerary and maps for those interested. JANUARY 25 TECHNICAL MEETING Bob Van Cleave persuaded Rusnak Porsche/Audi to discuss and demonstrate tune-up techniques on the four cylinder 356 and 914 series cars. The address is 337 W. Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena and the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Two mechanics will operate on two demonstration cars simultaneously. -WARNINGThis is not for the squeamish. It will contain highly explicit material. Anyone who would be shocked or offended by the sight of someone tuning a Porsche engine is cautioned that he may exercise his right of free choice and merely peruse the new car showroom during the meeting (no popcorn please). FEBRUARY ii PCA-POC RALLY PCA, with able rallymaster Ron Rommage at the helm, will sponsor the Second Annual PCA-POC Challenge Cup Rally. This is the prestige rally for Porches in Southern California. Last year POC put on "Destination Solvang" - a 12-hour Monte Carlo event in which PCA copped top honors and "the Cup". This year we hope to repeat or improve last year’s showing (we didn’t do as well in SOP as NAV). If you need incentive, remember that while being the "gloater" for one year may be a fleeting honor, being the "gloatee" for 52 weeks seems an eternal humiliation. Look for a separate flyer giving the detailed information. Meanwhile a brushing up of your rally skills and equipment will avoid panic come February ii. FLASH! Late breaking news from Ron is that the Rally will be a 6 hour navigational event, beginning at 9:00 a.m. from Gabriel & Olsen Porsche/Audi, 15531 Ventura Boulevard, Encino. But because most of you didn’t read this far, the flyer will still fly.
