presidential rhetoric This past month I received a letter from the Parade Competition Committee containing proposed changes for Parade competition rules. Regional presidents are bo~n0 a~kod to ~ook club membo~’ op~n~on~ and ropo~t
back to the committee in July. Below we’ve reprinted the proposed changes. Read them, and if you have a strong opinion, let me know before Parade. (To those of you who could care less about Parade and its rules, bear with me. This is the most reasonable way to disseminate this information. Next month I’ll get back to topics of more general interest, OK?).
PROPOSED CHANGES FOR 1979 PARADE COMPETITION RULES PREFACE The Parade is not only a competitive event, but also a social event. The rules contained herein, while meant to govern the competitive aspects of Parade, also by association somewhat govern the social aspects of Parade. It is expected that participants enter the Parade with the thought of good sportsmanship and fairness to all competitors, and not to use the rules to whatever advantage they can extract from them. GENERAL 1.5 It is the intent of these rules to cover all of the obvious and even the not so obvious problems, classifications, regulations, etc., that might arise during the course of a Parade. It is also the intent of these rules to try to treat every participant and every situation as fairly as possible. One of the major concerns of the PCR committee is that it does not want, and will not allow, any participant to read his own interpretation into the rules for self benefit. If at any time during the Parade, the PCR committee feels that a participant is showing unsportsmanlike conduct, or is bending or taking unfair advantage of a rule or rules, that participant may be disqualified from an event, or the entire Parade, at the PCR committee’s discretion, 2.1 Change title to "ADMINISTRATION & ENFORCEMENT." 7.3 A PCA member, or a PCA member and his or her designated family member/affiliate member, may enter only one car per registration. Registration fees will be set by the Parade organizers. 7.4 and 7.5 Deleted and rest of section renumbered. 8.3f Tires ........ two centermost grooves for the entire circumference of the tire, except at wear bar indicators. There shall be visible tread pattern showing on the entire tread surface of the tire. 8.3g Wheels. All wheels must be on tight per factory
specifications.
8.3n Exhaust System ........ shall be in a safe condition (i.e., no leaks, securely mounted, etc.). 9.1 ........ on the actual driving site, and (d) only for the cars entered in Improved Production and in

Saturday morning was cold and blustery, followed by sun and wind in the afternoon. Sunday was cold and gray, and then it really got windy. Sound familiar? Yup, Willow never changes, but we keep going back for more. Santa Barbara put on a good event with no mishaps. The big attraction on Saturday was the presence of two 928’s, one of which several would-be racers got to test. The concensus: if you’ve got an extra $33K lying around, you got to have one. Saturday evening the whole LA contingent descended on a local steak place. Pity the poor locals who came for a quiet dinner and found themselves surrounded by the rowdies from the big city. Besides the first place winners listed below, other LA participants included Nick Friesen, Pete Zimmermann, Bill Bohn, Judd Boykin, Roger Wagner, Peter Luelsdorf, non Ramage, Lynne Smith, Larry Amberg, Gil Rios, and Mary Levitt.

[~D[~[~[~ BOARD MEETING - 10 May 78 Hostess: Ursula Grunfeld Attending: 6 Board members, plus Pete Zimmermann and Peter Luelsdorf With several Board members out of town or otherwise engaged, we kept the meeting short and simple. Discussion of upcoming meetings and events, including our barbecue planned for the June meeting. No earth shattering decisions made. Adjourned early for the first time in memory. MEMBERSHIP MEETING - 18 May 78 After we dispensed with dinner, officers gave brief reports (nothing new). We had a good turnout of new members and guests, most of whom were introduced (apologies to Mike Dick and friends), and a couple of "old" members -- Ernie and Janie Kay -- who were attending their first membership meeting. We surprised Chris Gibbs with a birthday cake, complete with the appropriate number of candles, and serenaded her with a slightly off-key version of Happy Birthday. Dave Stephens then introduced our films for the evening, explaining that we would be getting out of sequence but that we could pick up the films we missed at a later date. We were treated to great footage on some of the legends of motor racing -- Rosemeyer, Caracciola, Nuvolari, Hermann Lang, and later Ascari and Fangio. Even in the early fifties the sport seemed pretty relaxed; amazing the amount of time wasted in ~_he pits.

YES, VIRGINIA, THERE WILL BE AN LA ZONE 8 CONCOURS THIS YEAR!!! We got a lot of response from my sour little article two months ago, and thanks to the diligence of chairperson Pat Hurty, we have now been able to schedule our concours for 6 August. Pat has done a super job of organizing the event, which will be held at Mason Park in Irvine. We’ll have all the information about it in next month’s newsletter. If you would like to help, call Pat (714) 492-8360, or co-chairman Judd Boykin (213) 788-4182. Thanks to all the people who offered assistance; that’s the kind of spirit we were looking for. We might have called it "The Screw of the Tern." Due to pressure from wildlife and ecology groups, the Harbor Commission cancelled our LAPD slalom last month. It seems that the nesting area for the least tern, a bird now officially listed as an endangered species, is on Terminal Island. It was feared that the noise and/or the exhaust fumes from our cars might do harm to the few remaining birds. We are still unsure what this means for our PCA/POC Challenge Slalom in August, but we’ll let you know ....... If you’ve already peeked at the calendar, you will note that the "Catalina tour" we had planned for this month does not appear; we decided to postpone it for

Because the car has to push more air out of the way when speed is increased, I feel that 3000 to 3500 rpm is more desirable when using 4th or 5th gear. This range may be used on the open road in all Porsche models. Your car will deliver fantastic fuel economy and engine life will increase dramatically.
~~ ~ ~
on your pride and joy. Deceleration to a complete stop from 2800 or 3000 rpm without a downshift means virtually zero wear on your car. And instead of waiting in a long line of traffic with the transmission in first gear and the clutch pedal depressed, leave it in neutral. Why wear our your left leg and the throwout bearing when you don~t have to?
~
Some Porsche’s feel as though they are very comfortable around 4000 rpm, and this is acceptable for steady speed driving for a short period of time, but certainly no longer than a minute or two. Over the last fourteen years, driving hundreds of Porsches, I’ve developed some guidelines about how to operate them and why. "Why" is simple: driving it is much more fun than paying to have it fixed. "How" is recapped briefly here: 1. Do not downshift when approaching an intersection if you know you’re

Q~t (The following article is one mechanic’s opinion on driving a Porsche. It is not intended as the final word on the subject, but it contains suggestions that are based on years of experience), I’d hate to have to guess how many times I’ve been asked to advise on proper rpm use and method of operation for the average Porsche used as daily transportation. Contrary to popular belief, "keeping it cleaned out" by running it to red line between traffic signals is absolutely ridiculous. The rapid heating and cooling of the combustion chamber during quick acceleration and deceleration tears up spark plugs faster than any other method of engine operation. It also plays a large part in wearing out bearings, piston rings, cylinder walls, timing chains, valve guides, etc. prematurely. You 911 drivers better be thankful that the engine in your car is probably the finest high
transmission overhauls. 2. Don’t downshift into 1st gear above 8mph; the car has enough torque to do the job from there in 2nd. 3. Don’t ever "hot rod" the car in 1st gear; the only reason it’s there is to get you moving. If you want to increase clutch and transmission life, take care of 1st gear and don’t drag race Mustangs. 4. Never (unless it’s Sunday afternoon) use more than 3500 rpm for steady speed driving. Your car will not go out of tune as quickly, your mileage will increase, and the engine noise (beautiful as it is) will not jangle your nerves after half an hour in rush hour traffic. 5. Never use more than 4000 rpm for the first mile or two after a cold start, and don’t use a "garage warmup." Just get in, buckle up, start it, and go. 6. I haven’t said anything about acceleration because it should be obvious that, if you want to drive at 3000 rpm in 3rd, all you have to do is accelerate smoothly to about 4000 rpm in 2nd and shift. Don’t try to accelerate from below 2500 rpm in any gear but 1st. Downshifting becomes necessary when traffic slows but doesn’t stop and the rpm’s fall back to that low 2000 rpm range. In closing, always anticipate what may happen ahead and have yourself and your car ready when you get there. Your Porsche will love you for it, and so will the "bottom line" in your Porsche file. That’s the one that says "cost per mile." Pete Zimmermann

Caring for
your car while moving also involves anticipation. For example, an average street 911 (most models, because they have mild enough cam timing and adequate torque) is quite happy at 2600-2800 rpm while being driven at steady speeds on level roads (add about 300 rpm for "S" models and 2.0 911’s). This 2800 rpm figure may be u~ed constantly in ~econd and third gear with no need to wing it to 7000 rpm. Enter anticipation. 2800 rpm is useless for fast acceleration; so if you see a situation ahead that may require a shor~ burst of power, simply change to the next lower gear until you are past the area in question. Approaching a traffic intersection may also be simplified by anticipation, which in turn decreases the wear and tear

Incredible! I received 21 correct responses to this puzzle. Glad so many of you enjoyed it. We’ll try another one soon. The first to get their correct answers to me were all ladies, but Karen Zimmermann and new member Ellie Amberg both got their newsletters early; so the only one we can count as a "winner" is Tina Florin. Others who found all the words were Dyanne Ports, Alan Shoemaker, Mac McKee, Max Hedrick, Bob Luth, John Dusckett, Ken Ito, Dustin Janes Jr.,
R. MacDonal d, Deni s Levine, Sue Sul I ivan, Darrel I Snyder, David Humphreys, Jim Niel sen, Col i n Cooper, Bill LeFlang, and Jerry Ringer, and Jerry Kosloff.
