--- c enua ’pres "" rhetoric If we choose to play historian and judge the future by the past, it’s very easy to anticipate lots of gratification from PCA-LA events scheduled for the coming months. The past that I am referring to is the first three months of 1979. For January we combined a membership meeting with a visit to the Briggs Cunningham Museum. If attendance and interest is any measure, it was very successful. Then we spent a Sunday at LAPD getting acquainted with the new pursuit course, all 55 of us; and judging from those who were there expressing themselves, it was also in the plus column, A couple of Sundays ago 52 drivers with their navigators made it to Calabasas for the 9 AM start of our annual Solvang Challenge Cup Rally. Accolades to Bill LeFlang and his competent brother John for a fine job as rallymasters, It was the only time I have ever seen a rally completed without some bitching and moaning about interpretations, ambiguities or whatever, There were no questions about this one. Thanks Bill and John. That perennial potentate of PCA Porsche pushers, Ron Ramage, maintained his usual degree of excellence in putting on the Zone 8 Concours at Santa Anita. It was a big job with little credit, and concours chairmen are hard to find. But Ron, as usual, took on the job and made us look great in Zone 8. We had 34 cars entered for competition, and another four cars on display. A good crowd was present and we took away some of the attention the ponies were getting, Our two membership meetings have both been excellent. John LeFlang covered the basic rally rules and procedures in preparation for the Solvang Rally, and Rudi Speilberger of VOA gave an excellent presentation on the development of the 928.
On the 7th of April the PCA national executive council will be meeting h~re, and we’ll have a chance to rub elbows (and bend elbows) with them at the evening cocktail party we have planned at the Portofino Inn at King Harbor in Redondo Beach. The parking area is a security lot with guards and plenty of space. We should be there about 7:30ish. Let’s show them what PCA-LA looks like. Our April meeting will be exceptional. This month only it will be on WEDNESDAY. The date is the 18th and the place is the Original Barbecue, 801 So Vermont in downtown LA. No reservations are necessary, but the room holds only 90 people; so don’t be late. As a guest speaker we’ll have one of the drivers who will be in town for the six hour IMSA Enduro race at Riverside on the 22nd. Everyone is still talking about the meeting where Richard Petty spoke -- this one promises to be even better. Although the Enduro race, which will be preceded by an historic auto race on the 21st, is not included on our official list of activities, a bunch of us are planning on going together. If you’d like to be involved, call Jan Winthrop, 670-1976. And to wind up April, we’ll try to take some trophies home from the Zone 8 Time Trial at Willow on the 28th and 29th. So as I said, from the past we can predict the future, and the past couple of months mean a terrific year. The people of LA Region are making it so. Dave Stephens

March 11th turned out to be a beautiful day for a rally, as over 50 cars converged at the facilities of Prestige Auto Service for the beginning of the eighth running of Destination Solvang. This is the annual competition between the Porsche Owners’ Club and the Los Angeles Region of PCA. It was also LA’s contribution to the PCA Zone 8 rally series. The POC/PCA-LA competition, which started in 1972, is called the Challenge Cup Rally, and has been won every year except one by PCA. This year was no exception to the rule, as we will see later. As the rally cars left from the start, the course took them on Valley Circle and Topanga Canyon to the 118 Fwy. for an odo calibration check. Then onto the freeway, where signs that were spelled wrong shouldn’t have been used for speed changes. After getting on Calif. 23, rallyists had to contend with a course trap: if you didn’t complete one instruction before starting the next, you ended up on Balcom Canyon, a road that has been used a number of times in this series. If you recognized the course trap (or missed a left turn at Egg City), you entered an area known as the Bardsdale maze, and had to contend with three active notes at one time, plus a forced turn trap. An off course control in this area helped lost cars get back on track.
The first checkpoint came soon after that. Then the course continued on Calif. 150, with a small confidence trap introduced to make you worry. After a short break in Ojai, and a doit-yourself checkpoint, the course passed by Lake Casitas, through Montecito, up US 101, over San Marcos Pass, and eventually into the third checkpoint just outside Solvang. On the way there were signs reading FALLING ROCKS (which didn’t exist), lots of red-on-white signs reading NO PARKING ANYTIME, and a beautiful rural area along Baseline Road. After a lunch break in Solvang, we departed via Alisal Rd., with a number of speed changes at mileage points, passing through Buellton for another checkpoint and a wave at the split pea place. On the last leg down 101 to Santa Barbara, a phantom car problem was introduced, involving a rather sick 928 travelling the freeway at 30 mph. After the last checkpoint, we all converged on the restaurant to relax and compute our.errors.
If this sounds like fun, then give it a try sometime. Watch the newsletter or Pitstops in the LA Times for announcements. Congratulations to all the winners. In SOP class, Duane Mihalek and Cathy Cardinale of POC took first place with a total error of 4.25 minutes. In the navigational class, Charles Fletcher and Joe Boucher of Santa Barbara PCA took first (and best time of day) with an excellent 0.65 minutes error. In the equipped class, Jim and Jean Paden of PCA-LA took first with 1.22 minutes of error. Jim and Jean were the winners of the Challenge Cup, making the score PCA-LA: 7 and POC: 1. Rallymasters Bill and John LeFlang appreciate the help of all those who worked the event (including Carola Anderson, Jack DiRosario, Sam Wang, Nick and Ceci Friesen, Bob Raucher, Mary Felo, Sue Becker, and Ann Wang), and especially the support of Prestige Auto Service. We discovered Sunday that Porsche owners aren’t very good about pre-registering for an event, but they do show up. Altogether 34 entrants came for our Santa Anita Zone 8 concours, and four more cars were brought just for the fun of showing them. Somehow we lucked out on the weather, with sunshine and cool breezes all day. Because this was the first concours of the Zone 8 series this year., we got to be the guinea pigs for a new judging System that is being tested. Rather than having several judges who each do a certai n area of the car, three judges each score the entire car. The judging took a lot longer than anyone had expected, but all the participants (and judges) remained cheerful throughout the day. And in the end everyone was a winner; 21 trophies were awarded, and the other participants received T-shirts and hats, compliments of Santa Anita. The Santa Anita organization also provided us with coffee and doughnuts early in the morning, and we really appreciated

After countless weekends of beer drinklng listening to KLAC, and working on our cars, at Judd’s house, the Monkeyface Race Team (consisting of Judd Boykin, Jose Ochoa, Jan Winthrop, Cindy Crystal, Don Crane, and myself) was ready to launch its assault on the Zone 8 Time Trial series. Or so we thought.
Six cars left for Vegas from my place about two hours late. After stopping a few times so I could catch up, and once more when Lark blew a tire, we arrived at Sunland P/A for pre-tech in about six and a half hours. All of our cars passed pre-tech except Cindy’s 63B, which needed a battery strap, We retired to our motel to party while Lark and Don drove to the airport to pick up Jose. Practice came up early on Saturday and so did a lot of problems. We used a camera shoulder strap to tie down Cindy’s battery. Judd had brake problems, his tires were rubbing the fenders, and the jets came out of his carburetors, causing gas to squirt all over the motor, Don Crane had an oil leak that we fixed with racing tape. Jan lost his windshield and a headlight cover. I needed spark plugs and my tires were rubbing on the fenders. It got a lot of laughs when I let the car down off the jack without putting the wheel back on. Practice ended early when an accident involving three cars occurred in turn one. With all our problems cured and a full night of partying behind us, we were looking forward to good timed runs. When the wind and rain had settled, the results were very encouraging. Seven drivers in six cars won five firsts (two unopposed). One of us also took slow time of day. Combined with four more firsts and a second for other LA racers (Susan McKee made a bid for Monkeyface membership with her taste for Jack Daniels), LA Region dominated the weekend. All of us salute Carl Young and Las Vegas Region for the tightest, most efficiently run event we can remember. We are looking forward to next year, and l’m looking forward to their Zone 8 rally. Ben Adauto
(And some additional notes from the other half of the LA contingent): An unprecendented number of LA "speed freaks,, reported to the Las Vegas Speedrome for the first speed event of the 79 Zone 8 calendar. (Besides the racers mentioned above) there was John Williamson in his near-concours 914 2 liter; Mac McKee drove smoothly and aggressively in his time trial debut, while wife Susan was "scared .... less;" Lee and Tony Burton won at the tables and at the track; and Pete Zimmermann, Jack DiRosario, and Sam roomed together and tried for the Seagrams/ blackjack record (we fell well short). The event was marred on Saturday afternoon by two serious accidents. The first involved Joe Weber’s 912 from San Diego. When one of his race tires blew, his car rolled and spun to a dusty stop, driver and passenger escaping without injury. Pete Stacy in a 914-6 and Carl Young in his 911 stopped at trackside to help Joe. Before Carl and his passenger could get out of his car, an out-of-control 911, steered by a novice driver, "bumped" into it. When the dust settled, the event organizers wisely decided to close the track for the rest of the day and sit down for a serious bout of Zone 8 safety think. A plan for implementing better instructor and student standards is being hammered out for the next event, Holtville. Timing went well on Sunday til late in the afternoon, when Mom Nature (apparently driving a Fiat) turned on us and produced cold, blustery weather with occasional sprinkles. Despite it all, timed runs went without upset. And LA walked off with almost as many firsts as it had cars. Thanks to Carl Young for a great event. Sam Wang
