wound up the month with a fun morning at the Malibu Grand Prix. Let’s keep it up. Congratulations to Jerry and Sara Pennington for winning first in class at the Parade concours with their ’55 Speedster; also congratulations to them on the new addition to their car family: John Dusckett’s blue 911. Never thought we’d see Jerry in a 900 series car. And what’s John driving now? ........

Part of the fun was getting there. With 68 cars we lined the mall of the Automobile Club downtown ¯ John Williamson passed out instructions for our rally to Don Ricardo’s house. "Just fell ow the directions and no one wil I get lost." I did hear of a few cars that got off course; the navigators must have been too busy counting stop lights. We had a quiz at the end; in the official results, Burt Misevic won. This is the first rally I’ve been on with my husband and it was fun. When we finally got to Don Ricardo’s home, the menu for the day was beer and barbequed hamburgers. Don took us on a tour of his incredible garage and talked about his 300 SLR and his 1928 SSK and many more of his cars. He was a great host and everyone really enjoyed the day. Saw lots of old friends that haven’t come to PCA events in a while -- like John and Linda Dusckett, Ralph Campbell, Roger Wagner and Greta. Sara

~Y TRIP TO THE 79 PARADE, or ..... Masochism is a two-syllable word by Jerry Pennington While Sara and I were flying home from the Aspen Parade (1978), a brilliant idea crossed our minds. Our 1955 Speedster is a very pretty street car, and it would be a "breeze" to prepare it for the Washington Parade in 1979. Twelve thousand dollars and 2200 hours of help from our friends later, we left in a borrowed enclosed trailer to seek the elusive Manhattan Trophy for the best car entered. There was a mild bit of trepidation, as the following items were not yet installed: deck lid, gas tank, steering wheel, horns, doors, tail lights, script, and about 25 other minor things that could be "easily:’ installed at the parade. But what the hell, we were on our way. Our trip to D.C. was uneventful and 62 hours later we arrived, eternally optimistic. John Williamson and Merrie Lynn Smith flew in on Saturday morning to help with the resurrection of the once-proud street car. Monday morning arrived, and by 9 o’clock we finished our project and were prepared to present our baby for judging. The concours site was beautiful, with the 356 cars assigned around a grassy knoll, surrounded by a small lake. The 900 series cars were shunted to an area bounded by a tennis court and a flood control culvert. ~I understand the concours chairman has a very nice ’65 Cabriolet)~

"We fortunately won first in class, but finished seventh overall. The Manhattan award winner was a pristine 1960 roadster. The other division winners were a 1973 Carrera RS, a 550 Spyder, a late 911, and a 924° If only my gas tank hadn’t leaked and ruined the undercoating, some dirt on the undercarriage, and about fifty other little things, we would have won the Manhattan. Oh well, there is always Portland in 1980. I wish to thank the LA members that made my first place in class a reality: John Williamson, Ken Ito, Jose Ochoa, Joe Leeks, Dustin Janes, Ron Ramage, Steve Wallin, Bob Morgan, and my understanding wife, Sara. There were many more helpers, and my appreciation goes to them all. P.S. from Sara: There were five LA region members at the parade: the Penningtons, Lynn Smith, John Williamson, and Joann Salzman Mikulka. John organized a cocktail getogether for the Zone 8’ers, and John and Lynn and Steve Wallin took some time off to tour D.Co With only one day of rain, a fire drill in our hotel and a loss of power for two hours (the bar could still make drinks~), it was a fun week with a lot of terrific people.

After a brief survey of the competitors, my heart sank. There was the car that beat our Cabriolet in the ’77 parade in San Diego; Chuck Stoddard entered an excellent ’65SC coupe; a ’57 Carrera coupe with 23,000 miles; and about ten other 356’s that the owners had taken the time and effort to make "right." It was all up to the judges. iNDEPENDENT PORSCHE SERVICE AND REPAIR ¯ Quality Service & Maintenance at fair rates ¯ Engine-transmission rebuilding ¯ Suspension-Chassis tuning ¯ Time Trial - Race Specialists
