GETTING MORE OUT OF YOUR PORSCHE.. This article is primarily intended for those of you in Los Angeles Region who have never actively participated in local events. During 1979 our club is going to hold a series of low key, FUN, noncompetitive and competitive events that are designed to make you and your Porsche much closer in terms of mutual understanding, To drive a Porsche to work everyday is a pleasant experience, but it is such a small part of what the car is capable of. Entering an event will allow you to allow your Porsche to really , show its stuff~ During the coming year you will receive advertising flyers in the mail concerning upcoming events. These flyers will give place, time, date, and brief description of the particular event. If the event is labeled a "drivers school" or "speed event" of some type, don’t just throw the ad in the trash, These events are fun, and they teach. You need not concern yourself with feeling--~ke a dummy if you decide to attend and don’t know what’s gbing on. All the people listed under BOARD in this paper will be more than happy to help you with registration, driver instruction, or any general questions that need answering.
I entered my first speed event in 1968 with a 1958 Speedster I then owned. The event was a parking lot slalom, with the course outlined in pylons. The object of the event is to negotiate the course as quickly as possible without hitting any pylons. It was a slow speed course (mostly ist and 2nd gear), and I could not figure out why I was doing so badly.
Having grown up driving on canyon roads, I had the basic knowledge of how to negotiate a corner, but I really didn’t know why or much of anything else about this slalom business. One helpful fellow at this event took me by the hand (after I begged him to) and together we discovered one of the why’s of my incompetence. On the way to the event I had picked up a nail in the right front tire because it was about five pounds low on air due to a slow leak. I felt like such a dummy~ Only now do I realize that I really wasn’t. You have to be taught how to define minor problems with your car.

At any rate, we corrected the air pressure, which in turn corrected the handling problem, and ever since then I have been able to tell when my vehicle has a low tire. A side benefit is that fuel mileage increases when correct pressures are maintained, tire wear is decreased and the car is safer in an emergency situation because it will be predictable. See, people have fun, learn neat things, and by realizing limits and staying within them, over a period of time you feel yourself becoming competent behind the wheel of your Porsche. And that, my friends, is a very special feeling. We do not race at our speed events, even at the events we refer to as "time trials."
