PCA’LA AT A GLANCE

PCA-LA is .~ diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is also a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory cl~b in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine ("Porsche Panorama") and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is !ocal. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. EDITORS’ NOTES

This is our last issue for 1980. The three of us have really had a ball working on your paper. We got kind of a late start, but we think we’ve made terrific progress; with all the support we’ve had, we couldn’t miss. We want to thank everyone who has helped us -- writing articles, drawing cartoons, taking photos, making phone calls, pasting-up and typing. We couldn’t have gotten this far without you. We’re really excited about next year. It’s gonna take us a while, but we’re working on a new format that we hope you’ll like. We’d also like to get even more of you involved in writing for the paper. Next year promises to be full of fun for everyone, and we want to

fill PORSCHERAMA-with-articlesabout it. From Connie, Lark, ’n Ann,

MERRY CHRISTMAS~

PLANNING TO ATTEND THE CHRISTMAS PARTY? A box will be provided for the collection of NEW OR USED TOYS in good condition. These will be given to the Children’s Hospital. No need to wrap. Thank you from everyone at Children’ s Hospital.

MEMBERSHIP We were delighted with the turnout for our first NEW MEMBER MEETING. Thirty members, old and new, came to the Yacht Club to watch the Board do its thing (not all that exciting, huh?) and to meet people and ask questions. Our resident "experts" in time trialing, concours, and rallying gave the group a lot of basic info on our major events. Everyone who came agreed it was a worthwhile meeting. So we will definitely do it again. Look for an announcement in the January newsletter. Also, thanks to the new members who sent me apologies for not being able to attend and lending support to the concept. We hope you’ll be able to come to the next getogether. WELCOME TO ALL OUR NEW MEMBERS AND TRANSFERS: Edward Waller -- 72 911T Targa - Black Jim Scrimger -- 54 356 Cabriolet - White Dan McLaughlin -- too many to name them all Lawrence & Linda O’Rourke from San Diego Darrell & Penny Evans from San Diego

Boy did we have a great time! On Saturday Nov. 8 PCA/LA had what will go down as one of its best and most successful events ever. Willow Springs Raceway is an old and well-known racetrack in Rosamond, just near Edwards AFB outside Lancaster. "Willow" has for over a decade been the favorite track for many PCA/LA members who cut their high-speed driving teeth there. The mere mention of Willow could set imaginations loose, all those steely-eyed Walter Mitty’s swinging into action! This year the PCA/LA Board decided that something had to be done to encourage some of the newer members to try some hi-speed learning at "Willow". Hence the idea of a low-cost, non-competitive, one-day frolic in the desert. The Board’s inspiration was richly rewarded - over 50 cars and drivers showed up. The event was run (seemingly by itself) with a.minimum of fuss - no timing, no corner working, no protests, no stress and strain - just hours and hours of track time under perfect weather conditions. The fellowship and Porsche talk were equally enjoyable, the day being capped by a hot-dog BBQ and beer bust thoughtfully put together by Judd, Lark, Nicki and others. It was a perfect day. We hope that this portends well for 1981. We’re really going to emphasize the new club members in 1981. There will be quarterly meetings specifically designed to introduce and familiarize new Porsche-pusher about club activities. We will put on the traditional Zone 8 Rallye, Concours and Time Trials events, but even more importantly we’ll have companion events designed to teach Novices how to get into these more sophis--~-~tedlevel efforts. We’ll have a Rallye School, we’ll demonstrate the care, cleaning and show preparation of your Porsche, we"ll try a couple of simple, softball, vollyball, etc. this summer. It’s a slmple recipe, PCA/LA for 1981, but it’ll be great if the enthusiasm of the last weekend carries on-COME ON OUTI Sam Wang

NOVEMBER DINNER MEETING

Our November Membership Meeting was held at The Hall of Fame Restaurant at Ontario Motor Speedway on November 13th. The crowd was small but enthusiastic - 28 people including our Guest Speaker Kyle Petty. Kyle, The Heir Apparent to Richard Petty’s Dynasty, provided us with a short but interesting talk about himself, followed by a question and answer period. Watch next year’s .NASCAR circuit for the appearance of smaller cars and a partial return of the Pettys to Dodge. The dinner was enjoyed by all - Bill LeFlang had three helpings of the Cheesecake with Cherries, while Don Kravig and Judd Boykin drank all the wine in sight (thanks for chauffeurs). All present enjoyed the session with Petty so we are planning another NASCAR meeting for January 1981. The proposed sight will be Riverside International Raceway around the 6th to llth of January. We want to make this a joint meeting with the Riverside Region. Specific information will follow in December. The meeting promises to be a good one - probably to be held in the Pits at Riverside with dinner following. Judd Boykin

A NOTE TO PCA-LA Fellow PCA Members: On the 4th of June this year, my business partner was hospitalized with an extremely serious illness. I am pleased to announce that A1 is now doing much better, and my personal life is once again beginning to stabilize. Because of the extra load placed on me during this past five months, I have not been able to carry out my responsibilities as Secretary of our club. For this I must apologize, because after my family and business, there is no question that the people comprising PCA-LA are Number One. Thank you for the many cards, phone calls, and words of encouragement that A1 and I have received the past few months. Sincerely, Pete Zimmermann PCA-LA Secretary
