PCA’LA AT A GLAHCE

PCA-LA is ,~ diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is also a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in ~he world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine 4~Porsche Panorama") and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy:

CONCOURS DEL EL CAMINO REAL The final concours of the Zone 8 series was held on Sunday October 5 at beautiful Manning Park in Santa Barbara. Although the day began with heavy mist, the sun peaked thru to create a perfect afternoon The host club served a delightful continental breakfast and participated with some outstanding "Exhibit Only" cars. By 3:30 the trophies were presented, and those of us from the other clubs were able to be home before sundown. The trophies were ceramic wine goblets with the Porsche crest on them. TRIALS AND TRIB~TIONS

Over the weekend of September 27 & organized and conducted its annual Education and Time Trials event at Raceway. This is one of the "big" the year for our region because of significance in the Zone 8 Series.

28, LA Driver’s Riverside events of its major

For those members of PCA who may be unfamiliar with this program, it’s a series of six weekends of driver’s training and time-trialing held from March to October of each year. The events are held at raceways in Holtville, Willow Springs, Las Vegas, Ontario, Riverside and Phoenix. While several dozen PCA-ers from the various regions of Zone 8 comprise the "regulars" who are seen at all of the events, there is an equally large and important group of participants - the Novice and First-time drivers. It is to these Porschephiles that LA Region particularly dedicates itself when it puts on the Riverside event. This year’s event was chaired by Jack diRosario ("Top Wop" it says on his helmet) and myself. Driver instruction was headed up by Jan Winthrop and Nick Friesen while technical inspection was run by the stalwart Jose Ochoa and Judd Boykin. Many other PCA-LA-faithfuls contributed their time and sweat (no mere figure of speech.) to the effort - thanks go especially to Karen Zimmermann and Tony Burton for doing registration, Denny and Eric Zimmermann for doing waivers, Bill LeFlang for timing (no Curt Kubler?S), Sara and Jerry Pennlngton for their calming influence, and John Fels and Bill B~hn for their protean efforts. Also my thanks to Rick Jackson for helping those people who had trouble with their 914-6"s.

The event itself was pretty much standard .fare for a major Zone 8 Time Trials meeting, There was plenty of practice time on Saturday despite a somewhat late start. The weather was terrifically hot - such that my car could only go about 5 laps before it would get hot enouqh for me to begin worrying about those costly l~werend rebuilds, The novice drivers acquitted themselves well thanks to our corps of instrucm tots. (There were a couple of misfortunes with 914-6’s but you’ll have to ask me about them

later. )

The porschop car (it looked like~a light-weight, chopped-top steam roller) was a sensation. Everyone wanted a ride in itl Judd is really going to have to screw his helmet on tightly to keep Connie Fern at bay! Pete Zimmermann’s neat Blue Rocket was shockingly fast - I think it’s going to get even wider and faster! Lee Burton was pleased with his 2111’s and is planning an.assault on the "2109 Club" next year (I wonder.how.... ). I took Lark and Tracy Nakazaki’s dad Tony for a ride in my car. It was his first time and he apparently enjoyed it greatly - it was a pleasure to see that man ¯ smiling so! When Jose drove my car he grinned, whooped like a real ca’boy and kept repeating how Lark just had to buy him one of these (914-6s). Ah, sure Jose, but don’t hold your breath. Williamson did his act of grinding down his doorhandles on the pavement - but even more memorable was his good cheer and encouragement for those novices he helped. A final - and most important - Thank You goes to our two Event Sponsors, Nicholas yon Rosenberq, the well known specialist in Porsche goodies, and Competition Enqineerinq, the enterprise of long-time PCA faithful Ray Litz. (Ray’s machine work is one of the reasons why several of our PCA-LA cars are so "healthy.") All in all the event was great fun despite the difficulties. Perhaps surviving the tribulations is what makes it so satisfying. Anyway, I can’t waits’till next ~ar! Sam Wang

PHOENIX FLIGHT III L.A. PCAers - you blew it! The Arizona clubs outdid themselves with hospitality and a wellrun Concours. The Raddison Scottsdale Resort was the site for the event at which even the weatherman cooperated. There was a good balance between California and Arizona Porsches. There were a few older Mercedes-Benzes and a variety of Porsche models on display - which made oogling very interesting. -The Harris Family Concours Team represented L.A. and won First Place in Councours division as well as Best In Show. This is an event you don’t want to miss in the future. Doralyn Harris
