PCA.I.A AT A GLANCE
PCA-LA is .~ diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is also a "region" o£ Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine ("Porsche Panorama") and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. PORSCHERAMA is growing bigger and better every month, with more articles and new advertisers. And we’re loving it. Hope you do too. We received lots of articles this month about the Portland Parade. Thanks to Bob Houseman, Ken Ito, and Lark Nakazaki for their contributions. It sounds as if it was a super week for everyone who attended. Our congratulations to all the LA members who did so well at Parade~ they brought home a huge collection of trophies. Of special note~ Ken Ito won the Best of Show Manhattan Trophy in the concours~ and the Mickey Harris family won the award for family of the year. Our cover photo this month is courtesy of Rick Becker. It was ~aken at the last Long Beach Grand Prix and shows Richie Ginther in a 62 Formula I Porsche. Aside from all our articles, the item taking up the most space in this newsletter is the PCA-LA By-Laws concerning the duties of club officers. It’s that time of year when the nominating committee is working on a slate of candidates for the upcoming board elections. Beginning on page 18~ you will find the descriptions of the various board positions. If you are interested in running for an office or if you know of someone who might be, call any of the current board members before the 15th of this month. At the October membership meeting (on the 30th) nominations will be accepted from the floor. This is an important meeting~ so mark your calendar and be sure to come. 5pe¢ialillng in Pot.so he

"GEORGE" HOUSEMAN
left for the
Parade early Friday
morning -- Jose & Lark in their 1974 Targa, Cindy in her 1968 912 and "George" and I in our overloaded ’64C. The weather was overcast in L.A. but cleared up once we reached the San Joaquin Valley. At breakfast we were treated to a gathering of over one dozen DeTomaso Panteras that were taking a collective trek up to Pebble Beach. We all thought how nice it would be to have that many Porsches together for a trip. We looked forward to meeting other Porsches on their way north to the Parade but all we saw ~that day was the vast flat farming areas of the San Joaquin Valley, a mysterious mound of tomatoes, and 227 tomato trucks heading both directions on the highway. The good thing was that we only saw one CHP car that entire day. Consequently we made grea. time getting to Redding...thanks to Cindy and Jackson Browne. We checked into a motel and spent part of the eveing trying to solve our 1st mechanical problems. Jose had injector problems with the 911 and I tried to figure out how that large nail got into my rear tire. The first evening ended with a good dinner at the Mesquite Tree restaurant, with their Ca’boy and Ca’girl steaks (thanks, Marsha). The second day saw us on the road early headed for breakfast in Medford (Dean’s hometown). Before .~etting to Medford, we saw the prettiest scenery (Mr. Shasta) and our first Parade-bound Porsches. Two 911’s from California, and a Turbo and a 911 from Texas. The California cars couldn’t keep up with us and we were soon lo~t by the Texas cars.
By late afternoon we were pulling into Portland with only i stop for gas and another stop to change a flat on the same rear wheel on my car (I’m sure glad I bought new tires before the trip!). While changing the tire, we saw 2 more Porsches experiencing "Life in the Fast Lane" heading for Portland. That brought the count to only 6 Porsches, plus ours, in 1,000 miles. But...pulllng into the parking lot of the Red Lion, we saw what appeared to be Porsche Heaven in the form of a large parking lot filled with hundreds of Porsehes. The next week was Parade, Parade, Parties, Porsches, Parties, Porsches ......... Then the trip home. A somewhat weary 4 cars left on Sunday morning for L.A. We had added Brent & Georgette Morrow in their yellow 911. They were nervous about our speed thru Oregon (what with Oregon’s radar, airplanes and unmarked patrol cars). But, they made up for it by adding 20 mph to our speed after crossing the California border (and we weren’t going slow thru Oregon). We stopped in Redding again and the Morrow’s decided to continue on to get into L.A. sooner, but we couldn’t miss another chance at the Ca’boy steaks. Next morning we were hardly 2 miles out of Redding when Jose pulled over with a leaking fuel line. We drove to a nearby truck stop and while Jose and I scrounged up fuel lines and patched the 911, the rest of our crew enjoyed the best breakfast of the trip. Our closest brush with the law came about IOO mile later when 2 CHP patrol cars did a double pass on our "caravan" but thanks to the Porsche folks towing their cars, (who we just passed), flashing their lights, we escaped unscathed. "George" and I said farewell to the other cars a few miles later as we took off for a side trip to the Napa/Sonoma Valley. Everyone made..i.t home withour a major incident (JOSE...you wer.e going to rebuild the 911’s engine anyway, right?)
PARADE CONCOURS D’ET,RGANCE by Ken Ito The place -- the fairways of the West Delta Golf Course~ the time -- Monday, August 25, 19805 the weather -- warm and sunny with no rain or Mr. St. Helens clouds in sight. After many days of last minute preparations in the Multnomah County Exposition Center, the spotless Porsches were ready for the first competitive event of the Parade. The Porsches were positioned according to divisions on the fairways around a lagoon creating a leisure atmosphere for the enthusiasts. Judges were required to attend the judges school and were instructed to be highly objective and to look for originality. The judges were extremely tough this year. They always seemed to find dust, dirt and grease with their agile fingers, where you supposedly just cleaned. Kim Linville, the Concours Chairman, arranged for Carl Smith and the Gas House Co., a local band, to provide music for the day, and Porsche-Audi provided box lunches. As usual, there was a sizable turnout of wellprepared Porsches and spectators on hand. Class A was won by Pat Scanlon of San Diego with his red 55 Speedster~ Gene Gilpin of Fresno took a first with his metallic green 58 356A coupe, sporting knockoff wheels~ Class D was won by Ken Ito of Los Angeles with his black 65 356SC coupe. Kenny Malkus Of 0CR took his class with his Gran Prix White 70 911 coupe~ Mickey and Doralyn Harris & T@am of LA won their class with their outstanding 79 Sebring 924 (they also took home the Family of the Year Award - congratulations!). Moving along, Gerry and Dick Layer of Newport Beach took first place with their black 79 930 Turbo~ Dr. Tom Chang & family of LA placed second with their Peru Red Turbo, and Ca1 and Clndee Marks, also of LA, took 4th place with their silver Turbo. In the Modified Class, our own Charlie Akly won first with his 914 race car~ Ron Armour took a first with his white 906,
which, by the way, he raced just two days befoce at the Monterey Historic Auto Races. Monday night’s cow, ours banquet introduced all the PCA national dignitaries, the Parade chairmen, and Ed Peters and his family, representing the Porsche factory. Ed Peters gave a special award to a concours participant who had literally assembled his light green 356A Cabriolet over the weekend before Monday’s concours. Ed could hardly believe his eyes when the Cabriolet appeared on the golf course.. The Honorary Judge’s Choice and the People’s Choice trophies were won by Gene Gilpin. The surprise for the evening was the presentatlon of the Best of Show Manhattan Concours Trophy. The winning car, unbeknown to the crowd, was driven up on a patio behind closed curtains. The introduction for the trophy was given and then suddenly the curtains opened and I was announced as the overall winner. My sincere thanks to the members of the LA Region, and especially Jose and Lark, Chuck and Stana, George Takeuchi, my brother and his family. Without their help and knowledge, I could not have accomplished the ultimate in PCA concours.
PARADE RALLY OUTTIME: I0:06 AM
Well that’s how it all started. We made it through the odometer check without any problems, but then promptly went through an off course control. That was the beginning of all our problems. I can’t remember running such a tlough rally before. Each leg (there were nine of them) was filled with traps, on and off course ~ntrols, and Porsches heading in every direction. On the 2nd leg the distance was only 7.8 miles and should have taken 17.92 mln. We managed to put on an extra 25 miles making our time a mere 22.52 mln. late. By the time we hit the 3rd checkpoint we h~d seen all of Oregon and part of Washington too (the rallymaster said we never went into Washington - he may not have but we sure did). After this point we ~ wer~t concerned about winning a trophy, Just hoping to finish it. ~ ~
Midway through the rally we stopped for our ’ picnic lunches, and enjoyed some of the scenery (thank goodness for rallys otherwise we wouldn’t have see~.much of Portland and it’s surroundings. Onto leg 5 after lunch. We’re doing a little better but still having trouble with the rallymaster’s traps. One example was the old numbered instruction sW~tch. We were executing Instructi0r #123, #124, #145, #126... the general instruction in ascending order, therefore #145 should have been omitted (Sneaky, Sneaky- we thought it was an error in the typing). Here we go off course again, but the off course control did get us back on course. Well 7½ hours later we made it to the end of the rally on Mt. Hood and went into the Timberline Lodge for our salmon dinners. At this point in the day we were so tired that we couldn’~ have cared if the sleepy volcano we were on blew up. P.S. Can you believe that we’re still talking to each other even after this rally.
Since we recieved a variety of articles on the PORSCHE Parade in Portland, I Just wanted to let you know who was there representing the Los Angeles region. Hopefully I haven’t forgotten anyone but if I did please let me know, it’s hard keeping track of everyone when you get so caught up in the various activities. Some old time parade goers were Vern and Ada Covert with their beautiful 904, Ralph and Gerl Booth with their ’~74 Targa with the stainless steel top, Wmson in our L.A. region’s 914 BBQ icechest, Joann Mikulka in a 924, the Harris family - Mickey, Doralyn, Jennifer, and Randy with their beautifully concours 924, Bob Rauche~ in his silver 356 "HIGH HO", Cal and Cindee Marks in their silver Turbo, racers Pat and Charlie Akly in their 914, and Kenny, Kokl, Jea, Derek and Kami Ito (Wow...what a team.i) showing’ their winning 356. i
Other parade goers, and some for the first time were: "George: and Bob Housman in their 356, (heard you had two flat tires) Cindy F. Crystal in her Tangerine 912, (a great target for the Oregon police), Doug Anderson in his white 912, Brent and Georgette morrow in their bright yellow 911 (another target), Carmella Tellez and Geneva Wollltz came in Carmella’s ’73 911 T, the Chang family, Dr. Tom, Jane and Russel showing their lovely Peru Red Turbo, the Stewart family, Ray, Penny, Butch, and Heather in their SC (that’s SUPERCHARGED MOTORHOME), and lastly Jose and ~ysel~ in our Targa.
