PCA Escape 2013, Day 2 By Jason Zammit
Read Part One at: http://exclusive.multibriefs.com/content/pca-escape-2013-provides-thrills-in-la After the sidewall on my tire was damaged yesterday I felt I needed to return to the mountain to complete what I had started. I collected my repaired tire, mounted it and then headed up to Newcomb’s Ranch. Based on the previous day’s schedule I thought I could meet the group about 10:30 at their scheduled stop and if I were late I would see them coming from the opposite direction.
Current Board Chair of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California, George Ball, accepted a contribution to Ronald McDonald House from PCALA Region President David Altemus at a recent Ronald McDonald House BBQ held at the Ronald McDonald House in Pasadena. Proceeds from the concours made the contribution possible.
Zone 8 Banquet, Concours & Driving Tour — January 18, 2014
I started up the "2" from La Canada Flintridge and I had an open road rarely seeing vehicles in either direction and when I came across "less spirited" drivers they pulled over and let me pass. The previous day I returned from the mountain drive in my crippled 996 in a slow manner so I wanted to make amends and took every advantage to drive my Porsche to the limit… I love the smell of cosmoline** in the morning! After arriving at Newcomb’s Ranch, I met up with Jeff Peck (PCA LA) and Marty Goldsmith (PCA Grand Prix, Tour Director) to plan our descent back down the mountain. I was privileged to be able to take the lead of the "spirited - group" and set a hearty pace down to the entrance of Mount Wilson Observatory.
magnificent views. Shortly after, the second group of cars arrived from Newcomb's Ranch. Once there, groups co-mingled, swapped war stories and prepared for the downhill assault. Marty called the group to order, presented options and let each member decide whether they wanted to go the long route around or the short way. The short way (about 30 mile) down the "2" to La Canada Flintridge, stop have lunch or the long way (about 100 miles) was back to Wrightwood down the North side of the mountains and then drive parallel to the mountains heading east. I chose the later as did six other cars, which Ted and Doreen would lead. We headed west down the "2" and then turned right onto Los Angeles Forest Highway (25 miles). The environment was desolate yet beautiful and the weather magnificent. The air was fresh and clean with very few cars in either direction so we took advantage of this opportunity and let our cars express our feelings with the suitable speed for the occasion. I felt like I was at Six Flags on a roller rollercoaster with each turn better than the last.
I signaled for Jimmie Mitchell (PCA, Grand Prix) to pass me so that I could pull over and take the When I arrived I recognized Ted camera off that was on the windLighthizier (Director) and Doreen shield. Even though I only took Pankow (President) from Santa about a minute the group was Barbara PCA waiting for us. I out-of-site. straight road driving and this is when the roller coaster ride continued with some rises up and down in the road. The scenery was changing back to more trees and with the color in the leaves from every shade of green through the fall colors of reds and yellows. We continued through Fort Tejon Rd and then through Pallett Creek Road. I felt sorry for the coupes because those of us in cabriolets couldn't ask for more with conditions absolutely perfect. Another 20 miles of driving and we were back in Wrightwood for some lunch. We chose the Evergreen Cafe as suggested by Marty. After lunch we all went our separate ways, some back to the hotel heading east on the "2", our guides, Ted and Doreen headed back to Ventura County via the 138 but I wanted to go on the ride again so I drove the 60 miles through the "2" again where it hit the 210 and I headed home with a smile on face. Thanks Marty & Jeff for a great two days of driving through the forest and spending the time to work out the route, practice it and deliver it to us. **Cosmoline is an oil-based protectant applied to Porsche (and some other vehicles) engines to minimize deterioration from the environment. When suitably heated it will produce a sweet burning smell. “2” = California State Highway
