Thanks to Jeff Peck Steps down as Activities Director In mid-September, Jeff Peck sent notification to the board that he is stepping down as Activities Director. There are many events that either would not have come to fruition or would not have turned out to be the successes they were without Jeff’s motivation, attention and dedication. Those include; Mount Wilson, Paradise Cove. Fillmore & Western Railroad, Ojai Valley, Camarillo and many others. Jeff would be the first to tell you that the rest of the Activities Committee were also crucial to the success of these activities. Jeff has always approached his post as Activities Director in a professional and enthusiastic fashion, resulting in well-organized and seemless event operation. His contribution to our Porsche Concours at Greystone Park over the years has been priceless. Just a short talk with Jeff will also reveal that he has possibly the most complete, accurate, well-informed and workable knowledge of just about the entire Los Angeles Basin features and history,

It’s good to know that you’ll still be around. Here’s part of Jeff’s letter. Hi All, After much thought and consideration, I have had to make a very difficult decision. Due to personal circumstances, effective immediately, I am resigning my position on the board of PCA-Los Angeles. I want to express my deep appreciation and gratitude to those on the board that have made it a joy to be part of something that meant a lot to me. I would like to thank all of you for allowing me to be part of the group, and I do plan on attending the great events that PCA-LA will no doubt still put on. Beijing welcomes the 50th Anniversary of the legendary Porsche 911 Porsche Is Joined By Sun Nan to Celebrate the Birthday of a Legend in the Illustrious Grounds of the Forbidden City

BEIJING and SHANGHAI, Nov. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- At first glance, they are three digits - nothing more than a logo. And yet, the three digits of "911" represent a legendary sports car concept that has stood the test of time. For 50 years, the Porsche 911 has been the world's iconic sports car and this esteemed history was celebrated in style with a prestigious gala event at the Forbidden City in Beijing, within the walls of the worldfamous Taimiao. To celebrate the centerpiece of the Porsche brand on its 50th Birthday, special guests from across the Porsche world were in attendance. Hosting the evening was the Chief Executive Officer of Porsche China, Mr. Deesch Papke. "I can still remember the first time I heard a 911, and the first time I drove one," he said. "These are memories that run deeper than simply driving a performance car - because when you drive a 911, you are driving a piece of motoring folklore: you are seated in a piece of history, as

well as a symbol of the future." To further elaborate on this historic sports car, Mr Achim Stejskal, the Head of the Porsche Museum, was present. Many of the most famous 911 models now reside at this iconic location and the historic impact of this incredible sports car was most evident when he noted, "More than 820,000 units of the 911 have been produced at our factory in Zuffenhausen since 1963. No other sports car in the world has ever been so well-received by automobile enthusiasts." As the night drew to a close, the acclaimed Chinese performer Sun Nan provided a memorable performance for guests and closed by singing "Happy Birthday" to the Porsche 911. Mr. Deesch Papke and five Porsche Centre General Managers then took turns to cut the birthday cake that marked the occasion.

Porsche and CORE Autosport to Partner for North American-based program Porsche to Field Two-Car Factory Team in 2014 Tudor United SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans Class STUTTGART, Germany and ATLANTA, Sept. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Porsche AG and Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) have announced the sports car marque will field a twocar factory team named PORSCHE NORTH AMERICA throughout next year's inaugural Tudor United SportsCar Racing championship. The effort will utilize the new Porsche 911 RSR, the same as the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans LM GTE-Pro class-winning entries. The headquarters for the program will be at Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) in Santa Ana, Calif. CORE autosport will act as the competition partner for the program. "North America is Porsche's single largest road car and motorsports market. Therefore, we have decided to focus a full factory program in the newly formed series, similar to our competing in the World Endurance Championship together with Manthey Racing," said Hartmut Kristen, head of Weissach, Germany based Porsche Motorsport. "Having finally a unified platform to compete on has made the decision so much easier to enter a GT based Porsche factory team for the first time in American sports car racing," he added. It is planned that the driver lineup for the season will come from Porsche's factory driver stable for both works-entered cars. A driver announcement will be made at a later date. The 2014 Tudor United SportsCar Racing season opens with the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 25-26.

PCA Escape 2013, Day 2 By Jason Zammit

Read Part One at: http://exclusive.multibriefs.com/content/pca-escape-2013-provides-thrills-in-la After the sidewall on my tire was damaged yesterday I felt I needed to return to the mountain to complete what I had started. I collected my repaired tire, mounted it and then headed up to Newcomb’s Ranch. Based on the previous day’s schedule I thought I could meet the group about 10:30 at their scheduled stop and if I were late I would see them coming from the opposite direction.

Current Board Chair of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California, George Ball, accepted a contribution to Ronald McDonald House from PCALA Region President David Altemus at a recent Ronald McDonald House BBQ held at the Ronald McDonald House in Pasadena. Proceeds from the concours made the contribution possible.

Zone 8 Banquet, Concours & Driving Tour — January 18, 2014

The second annual Zone 8 Weekender returns this January with the first Zone 8 Concours of the year, a driving tour and our annual celebratory Zone 8 Banquet. (And don’t forget the presidents’ meeting, of course.) This year we head to the wonderful Palm Springs area, which is fantastic this time of year. More info coming soon.

I started up the "2" from La Canada Flintridge and I had an open road rarely seeing vehicles in either direction and when I came across "less spirited" drivers they pulled over and let me pass. The previous day I returned from the mountain drive in my crippled 996 in a slow manner so I wanted to make amends and took every advantage to drive my Porsche to the limit… I love the smell of cosmoline** in the morning! After arriving at Newcomb’s Ranch, I met up with Jeff Peck (PCA LA) and Marty Goldsmith (PCA Grand Prix, Tour Director) to plan our descent back down the mountain. I was privileged to be able to take the lead of the "spirited - group" and set a hearty pace down to the entrance of Mount Wilson Observatory. When I arrived I recognized Ted Lighthizier (Director) and Doreen Pankow (President) from Santa Barbara PCA waiting for us. I needed to stop to adjust my camera and replace the battery, which allowed Jeff to resume his lead of the group and took the opportunity to say G’day to Ted and Doreen. Jumped back in my car and took up my position as the tail vehicle. Just like the previous day there were rocks strewn across the road but I took extra care today as to avoid them. I caught up to the group as they entered into the grounds of the observatory; we parked our Porsches and soaked-in the

magnificent views. Shortly after, the second group of cars arrived from Newcomb's Ranch. Once there, groups co-mingled, swapped war stories and prepared for the downhill assault. Marty called the group to order, presented options and let each member decide whether they wanted to go the long route around or the short way. The short way (about 30 mile) down the "2" to La Canada Flintridge, stop have lunch or the long way (about 100 miles) was back to Wrightwood down the North side of the mountains and then drive parallel to the mountains heading east. I chose the later as did six other cars, which Ted and Doreen would lead. We headed west down the "2" and then turned right onto Los Angeles Forest Highway (25 miles). The environment was desolate yet beautiful and the weather magnificent. The air was fresh and clean with very few cars in either direction so we took advantage of this opportunity and let our cars express our feelings with the suitable speed for the occasion. I felt like I was at Six Flags on a roller rollercoaster with each turn better than the last. I signaled for Jimmie Mitchell (PCA, Grand Prix) to pass me so that I could pull over and take the camera off that was on the windshield. Even though I only took about a minute the group was out-of-site. I got back up to speed in no time and then I notice a beautiful Seal Gray 997 going in the opposite direction, it was Jimmie. He doubled back to make sure I was ok. When I got down to the next directional change at Mt Emma Road I waited for Jimmie to catch up so he would not miss the scheduled turn that the group had taken. Jimmie and I travelled a few miles and there we found the rest of the group waiting for us on the side of the road. It was now time for some mostly

straight road driving and this is when the roller coaster ride continued with some rises up and down in the road. The scenery was changing back to more trees and with the color in the leaves from every shade of green through the fall colors of reds and yellows. We continued through Fort Tejon Rd and then through Pallett Creek Road. I felt sorry for the coupes because those of us in cabriolets couldn't ask for more with conditions absolutely perfect. Another 20 miles of driving and we were back in Wrightwood for some lunch. We chose the Evergreen Cafe as suggested by Marty. After lunch we all went our separate ways, some back to the hotel heading east on the "2", our guides, Ted and Doreen headed back to Ventura County via the 138 but I wanted to go on the ride again so I drove the 60 miles through the "2" again where it hit the 210 and I headed home with a smile on face. Thanks Marty & Jeff for a great two days of driving through the forest and spending the time to work out the route, practice it and deliver it to us. **Cosmoline is an oil-based protectant applied to Porsche (and some other vehicles) engines to minimize deterioration from the environment. When suitably heated it will produce a sweet burning smell. “2” = California State Highway
