"Lucky 7" Navigational Rallye, April 18, 1971: The tenth annual "Lucky 7" will begin at Denny’s downtown, behind Union Station. First car out at i0:01; two classes with trophies in both classes. Even if you have never rallyed, come out and see what it’s all about. The course is about i00 miles, and will take 3 to 4 hours to complete. We will end at a nearby Pizza parlor and compare notes. Entry fee is $3 per car. This is an open rallye; invite your friends, as all cars are welcome.

Drivers school, time trials, and 914/6 Performance Demonstration. This event is for PCA members only. Cost: $i0 per car; Date: Saturday and Sunday, April 24 & 25. Place: Willow Springs Raceway Pre-tech at Vasek Polak’s, 199 Pacific Coast Highway, Hermosa Beach. You MUST attend the pre-tech on April 14, 7:30 p.m. if you live within 50 miles of Vasek’s.

This prevents a tech jam at the track.

DIE SCHNITZELJAGD ..... To the rallymaster’s surprise, 15 daring drivers and their frightened navigators showed up at the start, Green Motors, for a fast "Monte Carlo" rally, despite the rallymaster’s reputation, acquired at the Octoberfest rally in 1969, where only 3 cars finished.

This time, due to careful planning, we turned this around, and only three cars did not finish. The rally route incorporated some of the better Porsche roads in Los Angeles and Orange counties, and ended at the Irvine Information Center. Scoring was based on the overall time (combined) and one point for each second early or late. Thus, the "Red Baron’s Revenge":

Unlike the years before, PCAers turned up in large numbers (would you believe 40?) to join the folks from the old country in the ringelpitz und anderen froehlichen spielen; several brave members came masqueraded, including the Boyds, the Gedeon’s, and the Dickson’s, who actually wore their costumes in the rally; everyone had a good time dancing, sampling some of the better rhine wasser und treats of the German kuche. By the way, if you didn’t understand the speaker, don’t worry; I din’t either and I grew up in Ge rmany ........ Pe te r THE FEBRUARY TEC}INICAL MEETING was held on Thursday the 18th at Green Motors in Norwalk, with Armand Gonzales, Service Manager, as the host. Tire balancing was the subject for the evening. The merits of various balancing techniques was discussed, as well as a demonstration of the Hofmann balancing machine. Anyone who is interested in how well the machine worked can as our President; his tires were balanced. Curt Kuebler and Dick Kodani substituted for Ron Reese.

of making her a Porsche widow. Oh, yes; she may be your navigator on a rallye, or a window and interior cleaner if you’re a concours bug, or may help keep lap times if you’re a racing buff, but there’s more than that for her in PCA-LA. Several women have tried to start a women’s organization to help stamp out the curse of the Porsche widow.

Women of PCA unite’ You have nothing to lose but a husbandless weekend. This neophyte organization needs participation and ideas. Help, women of PCA-LA’ Call Mary Morris or Carol Gede_o~ and |,|_ volunteer your he!p.

WOOerS g~D It began a few weeks before the wedding of Ernest Ozsvath and Lorene Lemp.

In the kitchen of Miss Lemp’s apartment there are shelves above the kitchen sink, and here she displays her collection of souvenier items of different places she has visited. As Ernie entered her life, so did Porsche.

Lorene accepted Ernie’s love for the Porsche and decided she wanted a Porsche model to add to her collection. Just about a month before the wedding, Ernie discovered that the little Porsche was missing from the shelf. Ernie started 3

to ask questions: "What happened to the little Porsche"? "I took it to work to show my friends", said Lorene. Ernie accepted this without giving it a second thought. However, after two weeks, the little Porsche was still missing from the shelf, and Ernie began to wonder how long it takes to show your friends a Porsche model. Ernie decided to ask Lorene again about the little model, and, to his disappointment, got nothing but static. Two additional inquiries also proved fruitless. Lorene’s wedding day was set for Valentine’s Day, so the little Porsche was completely forgotten. The wedding came off as planned at the First United Church in Pasadena. It was a beautiful day for the reception in the church’s garden patio. There, was the beautiful wedding cake ready to be cut; it looked like all other wedding cakes, except that there was a little Porsche on top. "Well I’ll be darned; that’s where it is", said Ernie. This was Lorene’s surprise for her new husband on their wedding day. Now the little Porsche is back on the shelf along with a little bride and groom, and together they will live happily everafter.

PCA-LA MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES, FEBRUARY 1971 .......... was held on the llth at Cahuenga Elementary School. Mary Morris spoke about starting a women’s group in the club to help out at events. Current treasurery balance is $236.69. Ron Ramage presented trophies for the january Economy run to Idyllwild. Nick Friesen was the winner. Peter Luelsdorf spoke about the upcoming Schitzeljagd. Cliff Yost gave a rundown on all events planned for the rest of the year: March is a slalom, April a rallye, May is a tour to Yosemite, a concours for June, rallye in July, Willow Springs in September, and a tour to Sedona in October, and of course the Christmas Party in December. Corky Kirk has received renewals for over i00 members for 1971 and we have our first refund check from National. Strother MacMinn will be the featured speaker for March. After the coffee break, Mary Morris introduced the speakers, Richie Ginther and Alan Johnson, who spoke about the 1971 PorscheAudi Racing Team activities.

SPEEDSTER TO 914 ..o by John Lipham ....

Last December, I sadly turned in my membership to International Porsche Speedster Club and sold my "Swamp Fox" and bought a 914. Following is my reaction to this traumatic transformation and a few comparisons: APPEARANCE: No contest. The Speedster’s classic form is a thing of beauty.

The 914’s shape takes some getting used to, but I have. PERFORMANCE: No way can the 914 compete with the much prodified SC setup on the Speedster. However, the VW engine performs remarkably well almost as well, I think, as a stock 912. The BRAKES on the Speedster were big Carerra’s up front, but didn’t do the job as well as the excellent disc brakes on the 914. FUEL CONSUMPTION on the Speedster was terrible -- around 15 mpg; the 914 got over 33 mpg on the Economy Run to Idyllwild: HANDLING the Speedster was great fun. Wide wheels, tires, and negative camber gave it sure, fast cornering, even at high speeds; the 914 handles easier than any other Porsche I’ve driven.

Some owners complain of a tendency to oversteer, but I’ve never noticed it.

I’ve heard reports that adjusting the MacPherson strut is tricky, because the factory maladjusts the height ( the rear is supported by coils). I still don’t know if mine are adjusted correctly or not. Anyone know who the expert is? MAINTENANCE: On the Speedster, this was a never-ending, expensive venture. I supported Joe Schneider for over a year. On the 914, parts are less partly because of the VW components. And the service is cheaper and less frequent, too. Mine suffered a fuel relay system problem, and the work has to be ~one ~v ~ Porsche dealer while the car is under warranty. I’ve had ~ some problem with my emergency brake, and the red light indicating the brake is on stays on, because it doesn’t ~-~~- ~ ~ push in the button that kicks it off. I’ve not yet solved that one,.and neither has my dealer. COMFORT: What can you say good about the Speedster?

Visiblity in a Speedster top down is unlimited. Top up is constant fear.

The 914 has outstanding forward and side visibility, but I find the rear view lacking. Heating on the Speedster was non-exi’stent, except for a heavy coat and gloves. The 914’s heating is excellent, due in part to the reduced interior volume, but also to the fact that it has a fan in the heating system.

Seatinq comfort in the Speedster was ignored, justified by those keen original Speedster seats. The 914 accepts criticism here, also. The driver’s seat adjusts for rake, but the seat back doesn’t adjust as in the 356 and 900 series. The navigator’s seat is completely stationary. The ride in the Speedster was rough, but wasn’t supposed to be smooth, considering the suspension modifications. The 914’s ride is slightly less smooth that my old ’65 SC coupe. PRICE: My Speedster cost a fortune, but was worth the experience of doing it, although I wouldn’t again. The 914 I bought used at ii,000 miles for $3500. That is certainly a plus for the 914: In summary, I miss my Speedster, but I like the 914 very much. I’ve had three 356 series cars, and they were great, but the industry moves ahead, and I think even those old die-hard 356 nuts will eventually accept the 914 into Porsche circles. If not, they may find themselves very much alone .....

ONE WONDERS what new members or guests think as they observe us older troops in action at meetings and events. Presuming (boldly) that a new member finds our acquaintance desirable, I wonder if he would make that acquaintance without our first effort. I think not. If one familiar with the "club" and its members doesn’t step right up and lay it on you (figureatively, natch) you wouldn’t make it. So Mary Morris says that the next meeting’s entertainment will be a social session, bull session, rap...whatever. Anyhow, we expect the bench racers will be all out to tell the neophytes about old Willow.

And some of us other intermediate drivers will speak knowledgeably of our many racing triumphs on the way through the Safeway Parking Lot. Some(maybe)real drivers will be there to explain why the rest of us are full of grits. And if we are all really interested, you newer members will feel warmer about a Willow weekend and closer to the folks in PCA-LA. That is just what Mrs. Morris has in mind...

Jim Ewing NOTES FROM STUTTGART: For the first time since it was organized in 1949, Porsche KG has a board of directors. Dr. Ferry Porsche is board chairman, effective April i. Heinz Branitzki will head finance; F.A. Porsche will be in charge of styling; Ferdinand Piech is head of technology, and Dr. Michael Piech, administration. By the way, it was also announced that sales in 1970 neared $137,800,000.

AUTOWEEK’s Dennis Cipnic reports that the 917K is frozen in place as a racer. No new engines are being constructed. ( They’re a steal at $35,000) The Porsche factory makes the 914/6 in racing trim ( Group 4) because it can beat a 911 and anything else in its class in rallying and endurance racing. It will be the lead car in the Porsche stable for such events. The 1971 Porsche 914/6, as set up by Porsche, is a fine car to drive and has the best Porsche transmission-gear ratios ever. The 911 will be in the hands of Factory #2, and is not contemplated for any competition purposes. The Engineering works ( and designs) will move to Austria. The old cars have been sold by the Austrian firm, and they will have the newest goodies next year.

Porsche will stay in Stuttgart to make 911’s, however.
