Congratulations to Jim Ewing and last year’s PORSCHERAMA staff for winning the Best Newsletter Award at the PCA Parade in Sun Valley. The award was for the largest region class, and certainly reflects well on good old PCA-LA. Bill McInerney won two trophies at the parade, one for autocross, another in the concours. Congratulations, Bil!. Too bad PCA-LA didn’t have more people at the parade, though; Golden Gate Region had the most. Attending last month’s putthepapertogether party were Pam (of course), Mary Morris, Don Somerville, Corky Kirk and Gini, Old Wierd Jim and me. Entertainment was provided by channel ii and "The Bride of Frankenstein" The previous month it was a presentation of "Jesus Christ Superstar". We have fun, folks. Write On:

For a quick picture of a fast rally, read on. Twenty-three drivers and 23 navigators started the MID-JULY RALLY by looking at the course map, checkpoint mileages, and driving times, then forecasting when they would arrive at each checkpoint. Scoring was strict, with 20 points-per-second error for slowest driving times. Most entrants used the low penalty sample driving times, which were set in a 914/6 by a big young lady from Garneil who only races on weekends. As you can see from the relults, the seemingly foolproof course map and instruction list wasn’t. The one typo (AHA: -ed) which read "after i" and should have read "after {--" (that’s supposed to look like a T -ed), caused little concern, but many cars missed Torrey Road and took Canoga Drive instead of Canoga Avenue. After 4 hours of flying low in the hot sun, 21 carloads of enthusiasts relaxed in the cool interior of Farrel’s Ice Cream Parlor and told all sorts of wild tales. The following people were indispensible in the success of the Mid-July Rally: Mary Morris, Corky Kirk, Bruce Kuebler, Cliff Yost, Ada & Vern Covert, and Ron Ramage. Trophies will be presented Thursday, August 12, at the school.. Curt Kuebler, Rallymaster. PLACE DRIVER/NAVIGATOR i* J. Hempel, S. Larson 2* D. Whorf, A. Miller 3* W. Smith, $. Adams 4* D. The other evening, George Gedeon said, "Nick, it’s been some 5 years since you were president, how about doing a guest column for me?" Since I’m laying around at the moment, and only available for a standing committee, I said OK. Actually, there’s still my office to worry about, SC to be kept straight, and some ASME committee work that’s spread over the nation that keeps my phone busy, but here goes for PCA .... Since our Porsche Parade in ’65 in Santa Barbara, our membership 3
has stabilized at about 250, and our big thing has been Willow Springs, which is fun & profitable and involves many people. The success of these events depends upon your support, and you need to participate to collect on what the club owes you as a member. Ask Jack Case (’60), Dale Boyd (’63), John Brevan(’66), Duane Alan (’67), Curt Kuebler(’68), Joe Schneider (’69), or Dave Kalbach (’70), all former presidents still active .... Driving safety is still up to us as individuals to keep "accidents" from happening. It can and will happen, even if you’re legally right. I try to avoid dangerous situations, to know myself and my car, and to be prepared for the unexpected. In the movie "LeMans", McQueen piles up a 917 due to a short loss of concentration. Collisions are usually the result of several errors, and in McQueen’s case, a 911 was in his danger zone, and he overreacted relative to his speed and location. If you take away one ingredient, he would not have hit the railing. Every catastrophy needs more than one mistake combined with another to occur. Otherwise, we’d all be dead. To be a safe driver, you must make as few errors as possible, and have you equipment in good repair. Porsche drivers have an advantage, because our cars handle better than others; still, they are dangerous if you don’t know its capabilities. Remember your very vulnerable gas tank up front and the fact that Porsches now have the power to be driven at speeds few of us are accustomed to. Good driving also requires practice, and it can be studied. There are some excellent books available, one of the best is "The Safe Driving Handbook", sponsored by the Aerospace Educational Foundation, and published by Grossett and Dunlap. PCA/ POC/SCCA member Alan Johnson has also published a book on competition driving. One chapter, "There Are 3 Kinds of Turns", will appear in Road & Track this
month.
Don’t miss it.
Gute Fahrt.

Maudi Audi remains silent. Some women have said they’d send in receiots to their favorite dishes. Pam won’t divulge the secret of the QGRT, Grits Soufflet. Your loss is my gain, folks, it’s delicious. Maudi eats it. It’s good.

NOTES ON THE 914: by Roger Wagner Just before leaving for L.A. after the Sun Valley Parade, I replaced a quickly balding front tire with the spare on my 914/4. ’?hereafter, at speeds over 20 mph, the car shook so violently I had to pull in to a service station in Haley, Idaho. The mechanic jacked up the front to check tire balance. After the car jumped off the jack, the swearing mechanic admitted that was the worst unbalanced tire he had ever seen, and gave up balancing the wheel on the car. So, on to the static balance (bubble balance). "There, that should do it.", said he, standing back to admire his work. To my surprise, he had just put on some ten (i0) pounds of lead weights halfway around on both sides. Contemplating some i000 miles to go on a lead wheel, I refused tile job. I asked him to dismount the tubeless tire. So~ guess what, tech fans?? Out gushed at least a gallon of water. The windshield washer on 914’s is pressurized by the spare tire, like the VW. The tank had been feeding washer solvent into the spare. The tank cap had apparently suffered a faulty check valve.
The first VW Military Vehicle, ,the KUEBELWAGEN (Bucket Car), was ready for use 5
in December, 1939. The Kuebelwagen had a KdF engine and modified KdF chassis. Dr. Porsche was pressed into production of this vehicle, sidetracking the VW series 38 sedans. Torsion-bar suspension, ZF cam-type self-locking differential (more recently standard in racing practice), engine displacement was i134cc. Extensive use of aluminum and magnesium castings; carried four fully equipped troops; posessed a keen ability to scramble through mud and sand; equipped with a snorkle-like extension on carburetor intake, enable "bucket car" to ford some shallow streams; one reverse, four forward speeds; sour cylinder, opposed aircooled; hydraulic steering damper; limited slip differential (ZF). The vehicle was designed to be the barest form of military transport, without regard for comfort or economy. Its smooth underbelly sometimes acted as a sled; when the Kuebelwagen did run aground, light weight enabled the crew (of even two) to lift or slide the car free with ease. An amphibious version appeared in 1942, called the Schwimmwagen. ("VW Nine Lives Later, by Dan R. Post; Great Plains Region, Howard Shoemaker, Editor)
