Mike and Anne, you missed a great weekend. Tom, you would have loved to have driven the Willow course. It was great fun, we got some new members, and it was a successful event, in spite of the misfortunes. Everyone please go in to Vasek Polak’s and thank him for being such a great supporter of PCA. Thanks to George & Carol Gedeon and Dave Kalbach for helping with the April issue. I got several volunteers at the meeting, too; thanks, we need the help, Pam and I. Anyone know what Maudie Audi looks like? Willard Wingnut was seen walking behind the little green house with Elizabeth Easy: Gary Greasepit and Helen Hubcap left the race early ... together? More juicy gossip later. (Oh: Jim Ewing helped, too) John

Advice to husbands who want a Speedster: Either get it before your wife knows what she’s in for, or marry a mechanic. Advice to wives whose husbands have bought a Speedster: Get a job, or get a divorce. I was a brand new bride, and John’s was the first Porsche I had ever ridden in. I knew he liked Speedsters, and that they were cute little convertibles. That was fine, but for some reason, his casual interest became intense. He sold his 356SC, which was fine with me, because the heater never got the car warm. Little did I know: After much looking and talking, he found the Speedster he wanted in Pennsylvania. We were in Alabama, so he suggested buzzing up there over the weekend and towing it back. ( It was only 1800 miles round trip- ed) That was when I should have gone home to mother. We left early Friday afternoon and headed north. After many stops for gas, coffee, and a few cross words, and after I lost my last snack on the side of the road, we stopped for a few hours sleep in Richmond. Hit the road again bright and early the next morning. Fortunately, it was a clear day, and the northeastern U.S. was beautiful in the spring, which made it enjoyable (as long as you could keep your eyes open). We reached our destination late Saturday afternoon, and just loved the car. The man who sold it (with tears in his eyes) was just great. With renewed energy and the Speedster in tow, we headed south. John was so pleased that we got to stop for sleep before we were completely exhausted (almost, though). The return trip was also eventful: People stare and point at you; parking places are hard to find towing a car; and, last but not least, speeding over the Pensy four
Turnpike when you have never towed a car or driven on a freeway is nifty. We got home safe and sound Sunday night, and was I ever glad to see our apartment’. But, that was only the beginning. There’s a whole new world our there for the "This is my first Speedster" owner. Pare Lipham

Hey, a whole bunch of things happened these last few months. The Semperit’s got used up at 50,000 miles, so I went to HAL & AL TIRE SERVICE, Vermont and E1 Segundo, L.A. Got the new Veith tire made in Western Germany. It’s a direct replacement, and more reasonable in price. The Veith (rhymes with rice) has stud holes on the inside of the tread for a do-it-yourself ski buff. While I as there, an ex-PCAer from Germany region (honest) was having some tires put on. His ’66 912 gets about 20 mpg around town and 23 on the road. Told him about my 32.3 ( and John Lipham’s 33 in the 914), and suggested he check on a Delta Mark Ten ignition system. (I’ve got one on the Targa) Maybe it’s my JB in the crank and transmission. That’s another advertiser I’m convinced has a good product. Next time you look under the front hood, open the filler top on the brake fluid reservoir. If the fluid is low, perhaps you should make another check. As the brakes wear, fluid goes into the .lines that actuate the brakes. Most of Porsches’ braking is in the front. Force the shoes apart, as that forces the fluid back up into the reservoir. If you had added fluid, you’d see what the overflow cup is there for. Corky Kirk five

LETTERSLETTERSLETTERSLETTERSLETTERSLETTERSLETTERSLETTERSLETTERSLETTERSLETTERS In sunny Florida, it was spring and a Sebring day. A friend and I drove down in a pick-up after being warned not to take the 904/6. Arrived about 3:00 p.m. Friday and slept in the truck. There was a crowd then, and it took us an hour and $21 to get inside. Looked like a carnaval. There were rides, shooting galleries, bead shop, etc. We got paddock passes and inside parking ($35). It gave us access to pit snooping until an hour before the race started. Only shapely girls in pants, so-called workers, kids on mini-bikes were allowed in the pits after the race started. We parked on the back straight so we could sit under the bed shelter in case it rained. Friday night it did, but Saturday was clear and sunny. We met Bruce Jennings in the Goodyear tent. He was changing to dry tires, and it was still damp. He said he checked the latest weather report, and all was to be sunny Saturday. I counted five large semivans full of tires, so there were plenty on hand for everyone. By now, you know the outcome of the race. Let me say that the private Porsche entry had to pull the thing off again to keep Porsche in the lead. The Martini & Rossi 917 was beautifully prepared and driven. They had no problems and everything went smoothly. The Wyer Porsches had their problems, however. Siffert ran out of gas and lost time getting back to the pits for gas. He was also penalized four laps for accepting a ride on a mini-bike. Later, both 917’s had left rear flat tires, and motored by our spot at 30 mph. We were at the hairpin when Rodriguez and Donahue were dicing. In the next turn, the Porsche hit the Ferrari three times. They pitted over an hour. The Number Two Porsche lost a front fender and light, but went out again. They pit crew made a replacement part from a Trainer 917, complete with lights and wiring, but it had to be installed before dark. It was, but Penske’s crew protested. The Penske car went back and was really charging, but only finished sixth. The Alfa’s were the show-stoppers. All but one ran without problems, and they placed second and third. The track is large, over 5 miles, and you can’t see all of it, no matter what ticket you have. People were flaked out on the grass ( was that a pun?-ed),lying around drunk, others were lying around making love. The communications were the worst I’ve seen. You couldn’t hear what few loudspeakers there were; you couldn’t see the scoreboard except in the pit lane, etc. I know PCA events are handled better than Sebring. Good driving, Vern Covert.
