LA Porsche/VW Literature Show By Bruce Pollock March 10, 2007, LAX Hilton Hotel. Well this was my maiden voyage to this event, and it was everything I had ever heard, and more. It is billed as a literature, memorabilia and toy show, which it certainly is. But more than that it is a great source for some hard-to-find parts and other items that might otherwise go unnoticed. And beyond the stated purpose of the event, like most club events it was a chance to see and chat with people that you might not have been in contact with for months, years or more. My casual observation was that it is this “contact or networking aspect that accounts for the popularity of this show as much as the advertised purpose. I recall that during our time there, I actually saw as many people standing and talking to friends and other like-minded Porsche and/or VW fans as were actually making purchases from the wide spectrum of vendors. Ed. Note By Bruce Pollock I forgot to mention some things about the Literature Show that I found very interesting. If you went to any sports car races in Southern California during the ‘50s and ‘60s, you will enjoy the photographs at www.vintage-sportscar-photos.com The photographs there are by Allen R. Kuhn, who was at what seems to be every race in Southern California between 1955 and 1965. Also of great interest was a vendor who specializes in Bosch Distributor Restoration and Recurving. He displayed what must be every Bosch distributor ever found on any Porsche or VW. It’s called Vintage Werks at vintagewerks.com. And then there was the guy with Billet Aluminum, CNC-machined Alloy wheels for 356 cars. These were very nice looking wheels and looked very strong. Not for restoring a car to original condition for concours activity, but nice nonetheless. So on the American LeMans Series

racing front, it was fun to watch the St.Petersburg event on TV last weekend. This whole year should be quite competitive in the LeMans Prototype 2 category. I would like to say, though, that I haven’t witnessed such carnage since the Trans American Sedan Championship of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Parnelli Jones and George Follmer gained some notoriety for “aggressive” driving back then. From what I saw on TV, it seems as though even they would be a little uncomfortable with the apparent disregard for traditional rules of the road on a race course. It seems to me that this is a natural price to pay for the “sport” having become such a business and outside the realm of a sporting event. I consider that race victories are earned by the application of technical prowess coupled with finesse. And “punting” is something that is done is Football. But I’m still going to Long Beach and remain a fan. So see you at Long Beach.

inside, the array of rare and unusual items was simply fantastic. It seems to me that if one were looking for a rare VW or Porsche item and couldn’t find it at this show, then the chances would be very slim to find it anywhere at all.

The trip to the show was quite an event as well. We all rode to the show in the perfectly-restored 1957 VW Bus of Steve Toshiyuki, a friend of our President David Altemus, who had made prior arrangements to park it in the front of the hotel.

Continued on Page 5.

What do you mean you can’t find a 32 NDIX Zenith carburetor for your 356. No Problem.

Early admission to the show is available for those who want to pony-up the extra fee to get first crack at items that may be in short supply. We arrived near the end of the early bird time, and spent the wait talking to people in the lobby until the regular admission time began. Once

Genuine Monte Carlo Rallye Plates? No Problem.

The front driveway of the LAX Hilton during the show was a show of its own.

So we received many thumbs up signs along the way to and from the show. People love to see older cars that are operational and operated. This Bus is more than just operational, it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I thought it was 1957.

Lots to talk about, everywhere you turn.

A cool neon sign. Don’t know the price, but the guy’s name is David Mann at 310-890-5390 if you want to install one in your garage.

Found in the driveway. I’m guessing this might belong to the guy with the Monte Carlo Rallye Plates.

Our steed for the day. Steve Toshiyuki’s 1957 VW Bus in perfect condition. I did finally recall that maximum comfort is derived by sitting “on” rather than “in” the seats.

A fine array of model Porsche cars of all kinds and sizes, from many different vendors.

There are pictures of some of the vendors’ wares and general interest shots accompanying this story. The pictures I took do not really capture the general aura of the event. It is like a convening of VW and Porsche enthusiasts and you never know who you’ll run into in the middle of the next aisle that you haven’t seen or spoken to in the last seventeen years or so. And on top of that, you’re talking to them right next to someone selling some really rare bit of “unobtania”

that you were certain just couldn’t be gotten at all anymore, anywhere. Vendors and attendees come from around the country and indeed around the world. All the vendors are real enthusiasts themselves, and do what they do because they love doing it. They just found a way to turn their passion into a business. It was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday.

St. Petersburg (cont.) damage and a flat tire. Although the LMP1 driver was penalized for his action, it put the polesitting Porsche back in the pack, two laps down. The Briscoe/Maassen car had similar bad luck in the early going, as it sucked up carbon fiber pieces from the start incident, clogging the air intake and causing the oil, coolant and brakes to run very hot. Then Briscoe came together with another LMP2 and the officials handed him a stop-and-go penalty. The car incurred yet another penalty when a crew member had goggles up during a pit stop. Sixty minutes into the two hour, 45-minute event, Briscoe/Maassen were sixth in class and Dumas/Bernhard were seventh. The team then calculated their fuel stops, driver changes, and tire changes so they could maximize their on-track time and take advantage of the opportunities presented by the yellow flags to secure the one-two finish. "That's the great thing about endurance racing," said team owner Roger Penske, who called the strategy on the radio for the class-winning car. "You can make mistakes and survive racing incidents - your fault or not - and catch the leaders with good driving, smart driving, and quick pit work. I am very proud of our Penske Motorsports crew, especially after the disappointing results from Sebring," Penske added. Porsche and Acura are now tied for the lead in the LMP2 class series with 39 points each. Next Stop Long Beach. Hope to see you there.

Porsche Reduces CO2 And Pollutant Emissions Far-Reaching Measures to Improve Environmental Compatibility Press release from PCNA ATLANTA, MARCH 6, 2007 — Stuttgart, Germanybased automobile manufacturer Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG announced at the Geneva Auto Show that starting as early as next year all Porsche models will comply with the strict EU5 emission standards set to go into effect September 2009 and at the same time will meet the currently defined EU6 standards before their scheduled September 2014 start date. Porsche also shared that all Porsche engines used in its current sports cars and sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) are able to run on fuel with an ethanol additive. Porsche’s sports cars are designed to operate on gasoline with a 10 percent ethanol mix, while the 2008 Cayenne SUVs that now feature direct fuel injection are able to run on a fuel mixture with up to 25 percent ethanol. Porsche also is working on a Flexible

To further minimize fuel consumption and emissions, Porsche also is giving top priority to the development of a hybrid engine that the company is creating with the Volkswagen Group. This "full hybrid" combines a gasoline combustion engine with an electric motor. With this system, both power units can operate together and independently of one another, thus providing three different operating modes. The concept, which is planned for a future Cayenne SUV variant, will enter the market before the end of this decade. Porsche expects this alternative drive concept to further reduce fuel consumption by another 30 percent.

On a recent weekend the Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track in the South of France hosted the annual official Le Mans Series test. As always there was plenty of new machinery out on track for the very first time. With its long 'Mistral' straight, it also offered the teams a rare opportunity to test their low-downforce setup in preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. All eyes, including ours, were of course on the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP, which covered its very first kilometers in public. Even though it clocked the fastest time around the track, it was followed very closely by the new Pescarolos and Lolas. Some of the cars were actually completed at the track; in particular the Gulf-livered LMP2 Zytek impressed everyone by setting the second fastest time in its class. Our photographers flew out to the French Mediterranean coast to capture all the news and action. All of these impressions have been compiled in our Le Mans Series 2007 Preview and an exclusive 150-shot slideshow.

In addition to its efforts to reduce fuel consumption through the use of lightweight technology, VarioCam Plus valve management and direct fuel injection, Porsche’s plans should significantly reduce CO2 emissions and nitric oxide in exhaust emissions while meeting the EU5 and EU6 standards ahead of time.
