July Fun Run/Brunch

LA’s Zone 8 Concours

Story & Photos By Bob Gordon

In Marina Del Rey

On Sunday the 15th of July this year, 19 cars set out from our meeting place in the parking lot of Taft High school for our fun run to Ventura and brunch at the Four points Sheraton Complex.

By Bruce Pollock I’m sure that there are many nice locations for a concours, but our venue has to be among the tops on the list. Burton Chace Park in Marina Del Rey has been our concours location for many years and it never fails to deliver excellent weather and an overall peaceful and beautiful environment for the static display of our cleanest Porsches, which are actually most impressive when driven.

Ready for a fun trip and lots of good food, the group assembles before we embark on the fun run.

We wound our way through the scenic and funto-drive mountain roads inland from Malibu and other beach areas. I made the scouting run in my SUV which accounts for our early arrival at the Sheraton because the route simply takes less time in a Porsche than in my SUV. We parked right next to the entrance and were delighted by the food, presentation and sheer volume of food available for our consumption. The view of the hundreds of boats in the harbor coupled with the fine service and spaciousness of the room where we were seated made this one of our most memorable brunch events ever. Photos on Page 4.

Even in this tranquil setting, they all seem to be saying “Drive Me!”

This year I was fascinated to watch the judging cycle of the winning entry in the Street Division S-5 Class — a 1985 911 Carrera Coupe belonging to first time entrant Joey Brauer. I watched and listened as Head Judge Robert Chamberlin prepped the members of his crew for the judging. Continued on Page 4.

ing the area for their next judging, Robert took some time with Joey to more fully familiarize him with the ins and outs of the process. Everyone learns something from these things. Lunch was wonderful as usual, and the day was a complete success. Thanks to Bob Gordon and all the judges and board members who made it all happen.

Parked along the way. Breaks are good even when you’re having this much fun.

The Head Judge begins his initial one minute alone with the car being judged.

Making the best of the judging time allotted, the Head Judge needs to see all he can in a short period.

The facility was very spacious and a delightful setting for the consumption of “mass quantities” of food.

Judging begins by the other judges. Notes are made about what is found to be good or not.

How’s this for a view. Boats everywhere you look. The water was calm and most boats seemed to be “home.” The engine compartment gets the white towel treatment. If there’s dirt, it will be found.

Another view of the harbor. This was a very pleasant Sunday for all of us.

Head Judge Robert Chamberlin explains what has just gone on to Joey Brauer. Martin Holford photo.

November 2-4, 2007, Porsche Rennsport Reunion III at Daytona International Speedway in Florida. "I really enjoyed serving as Co-Grand Marshal at the previous Porsche Rennsport Reunion," Mr. Schwarzenbauer related. "At that event I was so impressed with the enthusiasm and camaraderie of the participants and fans. It was easy for me to see that the Porsche racing community is truly one big family and this event is their exclusive gathering. I look forward to another great reunion with them." An avid Porsche racing fan, Betty Jo Turner has edited Porsche Panorama for 38 years. The monthly magazine has a circulation of 57,000 enthusiastic Porsche Club of America members.

And The Winner Is... Porsche & Penske Driver’s Crown Still To Be Decided From PCNA DETROIT – September 1 – Romain Dumas (France), driving the number seven Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder LMP2 prototype, pulled side-by-side and then passed the Pirro/Werner Audi R10 TDI LMP1 car with four laps to go to win Porsche’s eighth straight American Le Mans Series event overall at the Detroit Belle Isle Sports Car Challenge presented by Bosch. With the Penske Porsche victory and the Dyson Racing Porsche’s Butch Leitzinger (USA)/Andy Wallace (England) second place in LMP2, Porsche also clinched the LMP2 engine and LMP2 chassis manufacturers championship for 2007, adding to the Penske Racing team championship which was decided last week at Mosport. Dumas, and co-driver Timo Bernhard (Germany), started behind their Penske Porsche teammates Ryan Briscoe (Australia) and Sascha Maassen (Germany), but Briscoe ran into trouble early, incurring a penalty for avoidable contact with a GT2 car, handing the lead to Bernhard. But, after a series of pit stops – which included 12 laps that were led by the Dyson Racing Porsche of Guy Smith – Briscoe put himself back in the lead before handing the car over to Maassen

Pirro/Werner Audi jumped into the lead at the re-start, and it looked like the more powerful diesel race car would break the Porsche overall win streak, but Dumas chased him down with less than three minutes to go.

"Porsche motorsport has been followed intensely by Porsche Club of America members since the club’s formation in 1955," Mrs. Turner commented.

"The Audi could pull away on the two long straights, but I could get close at the short corners. I did not want to risk my LMP2 first position, but I found a place to pass. He then passed me back, but I caught him again at the next corner. I knew I could turn faster laps, but it was hard to get past him because of traffic and his power out of the corners," said Dumas. Maassen ran into bad luck late in the race as one of the Acuras spun and knocked off the rear spoiler of the number six car, causing an unscheduled pit stop and putting him two laps back, resulting in a seventh-place finish in class. Although Bernhard/Dumas have not clinched the LMP2 driver championship, they are 37 points ahead of Briscoe/Maassen with only 49 points to be earned in the last two events.
