Desolation Highway Road Trip Stories By Bruce Pollock It seemed like a normal “nothing special” kind of day when I checked my email. There among the seemingly obligatory solicitations was one that read “PCALA Newsletter Input” in the subject line. So being a guy who’s always on the hunt for what has come to be known as “content,” I quickly opened it up. Turns out it was from one Continued on Page 4.

Malibu Sunday Drive Sunday May 20th saw 38 of our Porsches take to the roads in the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu and all 60 participants descended upon Paradise Cove for lunch after the drive. Thanks to Martin Holford and Roger Ignon for the photographs. A few of the gathering group at the Spitfire Grill and then at Paradise Cove. More photos on Page 6.

Road Trips (cont.) of our members — Mike Newlon. Mike explained as how he was recently retired and was enjoying his time by going on long highway (not freeway) trips. Not only that but he was making these trips in his 1969 912 that had been completely overhauled with an eye toward these trips. It’s not a restoration so much as a return to complete usefulness, and practical and reliable for trips he had planned. I had an opportunity to meet Mike and his wife Bernadette and see the car in the parking lot at Paradise Cove last month after the Malibu Canyon drive event. Mike is very pleased with the car and I can see why. While it is 38 years old, it responds with enthusiasm every time Mike makes a driving request. Mike is working on a follow up story about the work that was done on the car to prepare it for its new life. Meanwhile here is the first of a three-part series about his trip from the Mexican border to the Canadian border along US Highway 95.

US Hwy 95 crossing former US Hwy 60.

Thanks, Mike.

"Desolation Highway – Porsche Style" Part 1 — San Luis AZ to Winnemucca NV By Mike Newlon US Highway 95 runs north-south through Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho connecting our Mexican and Canadian borders. Today’s highway shares routing with short sections of I-10, I-40 and I-80, but is otherwise much as it was in the 1950s for the vast majority of its 1,574 mile length. My trip started at the US/Mexican border in San Luis AZ.

Nevada’s legendary emptiness.

Southernmost US Hwy 95 marker.

Today’s routing of US Hwy 95 continues north through Yuma and the Army’s sprawling Yuma Proving Ground to Quartzite AZ then west to Blythe CA on I-10 (atop what used to be US Hwy 60). Old highway 60 is now Hobson Way, the principal east-west street in Blythe. I turned north on Hwy 95 in downtown Blythe toward Las Vegas NV. US Hwy 95 bisects Las Vegas and continues northwest past the Nevada Test Site where atmospheric and underground weapons tests have been carried out for many years. "Area 51" is reported to be somewhere in this vast territory but I didn’t stop to look for something that, of course, isn’t there. In this highway segment between Las Vegas and Fallon it was possible to see the highway from one pass across a wide plateau and up to another pass on the horizon at least 30 miles away.

Restoration of 1907 high school in Goldfield NV underway.

Goldfield NV was a trip highlight. In 1906 it was the largest city in Nevada with 30,000 residents. But the gold mines soon stopped producing and Goldfield quickly became one of Nevada’s many Ghost Towns. Many stone buildings still exist and, protected by the dry desert climate, are ripe for restoration. continued on page 5.

Goldfield’s Fire Station has new life. The 1907 High School and the Cook Bank Building are in process. The very large Goldfield Hotel is now owned by a private investor, only needing an infusion of labor and money to restore former glory. A day or two in Goldfield would have been well spent. I spent my first night in Winnemucca NV and was greeted the following morning by a chill in the air and the sight of my car covered in early April snow outside my hotel window.

Recent News (cont.) Sponsored by Porsche Cars North America and organized by Brian Redman’s Intercontinental Events, Inc., Porsche Rennsport Reunion is held every three years. It is open to the public and brings together an unprecedented gathering of significant Porsche vintage and current racecars and famous Porsche race drivers. It features a three-day program of on-track competition plus a concours d’elegance, which is open to the event’s participants by invitation. In addition, special activities are planned including, for the very first time, a Porsche model car contest and a Porsche motorsport memorabilia swap meet, as well as events commemorating the awesome Porsche 917 and the 25th Anniversary of the racing debut of the all-conquering Porsche 956/962 prototypes. Coupe Porsche 917s expected to appear at Porsche Rennsport Reunion III include the actual or similar 917/Ks that were victorious in such races as the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the 12 Hours of Sebring; the elegant 917 Long-tail; and the striking one-of-a-kind 917/20 "Pink Pig." Spyder 917s slated to be in the field include SCCA Can Am championship-winning twin-turbocharged 917/10s and 917/30s as well as earlier non-turbocharged versions of one of the world’s most powerful road racing cars. Porsche 917 drivers who will attend include Richard Attwood, Vic Elford, George Follmer, Hurley Haywood, Willy Kauhsen, Charlie Kemp, Gerald Larrousse, Rudi Lins, David Piper, Brian Redman, and Gijs van Lennep. The large field scheduled to celebrate the "25th Anniversary of the Porsche 956/962" includes an equally famous group of Daytona, Le Mans, and Sebring winners plus the very first 962 ever built. Porsche 956/962 drivers expected to attend include John Andretti, Derek Bell, David Hobbs, Bruce Leven, Jochen Mass, John Morton, Bobby Rahal, and Chip Robinson. Porsche Rennsport Reunion III’s featured 917 and 956/962 cars will take part in unique commemorative races, parade laps, and concours d’elegance classes. Their drivers will participate in a special autograph session with proceeds donated to an appropriate charitable organization.

A chilly morning in Winnemucca NV.

Additional details of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion will be published on Porsche’s press web site (www.press.porsche.com), Brian Redman’s Intercontinental Events web site (www.rennsport2007.com), and Daytona International Speedway’s web site (http://www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com/), as they become available. Ticket information is available by contacting Daytona International Speedway at 1-800-PITSHOP.

Wanted: PCA History By Ellen Beck, PCA National Historian An important goal of an historian is to collect and archive significant items of our club’s history, in addition to the typical paper records and documents. Our premier national event since our club’s inception has been the national Porsche Parade, yet we have very few examples of Parade memorabilia in our collection.

Effective Hwy 95 speed control.

The weather forecast called for clearing skies so I packed the car, checked my engine oil and headed north into the Old West. Be sure to watch future PorscheRama editions for more on this Porsche highway adventure.

I hope to acquire a selection of memorabilia from each of our 51 previous Parades which would include the following items: Parade binder, Schedule of Events, Trophy, logo patch, decal and grille badge, wine glass and Yearbook (from Parades that had these), and any other unique items, video and photos from individual Parades. I appeal to our membership to consider donating any of these items (or others) where you may have duplicates or no longer have the room or inclination to store them. They will find a welcoming home and attractive display space in our new National Offices. Please contact Ellen Beck at historian@pca.org or (301) 788-0370, or Vu Nguyen at admin@pca.org or (703) 321-2111 if you have questions or are able to assist in our search. Items may be mailed to the PCA National Office at P.O. Box 1347, Springfield, VA 22151. A PCA Certificate of Appreciation will be sent as a thank you for your generosity.
