In our June issue this year, we had a story from Mike Newlon about one of the road trips he has made in his 1969 912 that has been completely overhauled and prepared for trips of this sort.
By Bruce Pollock
This month we have the second of three parts about his trip along US Highway 95 which runs north and south from Mexico to Canada.

About a year ago we presented a section about some newly-released books that seemed like they would be excellent for Holiday gift-giving. Here are a couple for this year. This first one is not at all specifically related to Porsche, but noteworthy nonetheless. I myself have been seeing and reading the work of Bernard Cahier for about as long as I have been able to do either. It seems to me that no one more exemplifies the spirit and art of midcentury Grand Prix Motor Racing than Bernard Cahier. It’s titled F-Stops, Pit Stops, Laughter & Tears - Memoirs Of An Automotive Journalist. Here’s what Road & Track had to say about it: “Bernard is one of the most famous and celebrated photographers in the automotive world and first began contributing to Road & Track in the early 1950s. His career took him nearly everywhere in the racing world, and he became friends with virtually all of the drivers – note that the forwards for his book are written by Phil Hill and Dan Gurney. The book encompasses more than 1300 photographs surrounded by 142,000 words, so you know that the stories of adventures within the racing fraternity are all there. This must surely rank as the most complete memoir of all time in this field. If you have a passion for sports car racing and the Grand Prix circus from the 1950s through the 1980s, you will be delighted with F-Stops, Pit Stops, Laughter & Tears.”

When you open an email from one of our board members it will look just like this. It is notification of an up-coming event and an invitation to join us. Response, contact info and other pertinent data about the event is included. Sometimes events grow from concept to reality in a short period of time. When that happens, as with the September 9th Turbo Cab debut at Beverly Hills Porsche, these email notices may be the only way we have of contacting you in time. All the more reason to be sure your email info is up-to-date. Make your updates at www.pca.org.

2007
By Bruce Pollock It’s November, and 2008 is just around the bend. And speaking of “ ‘round the bend,” I’ve just returned from the 2007 edition of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. This is the annual spectacular presentation of the Specialty Equipment Market Association, where everything that’s new for the automotive aftermarket is shown for tradespeople who come from around the world to see what manufacturers and marketers have in store for the coming year. My favorite vehicle on display was what the exhibitor called a four-wheel motorcycle. It is really a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. They start with a “Boxer” BMW motorcycle for power and running gear. Then they manufacture billet aluminum pieces to turn it into a four wheel vehicle that really looks like fun. Check it out at gg-quad-northamerica.com. These things are extremely cool.

A couple of shots of the GG Quad from their web site.
Always on the lookout for something to read, I saw some writing cast (or possibly injection molded) into the lids of our trash barrels this morning. It said “TO MOVE CART.” Reading on, I found essentially the operating instructions for this “vehicle.” And they were quite specific; “1) GRASP HANDLE 2) TILT 3) PUSH OR PULL.” I wondered who are the people who actually need this? And if they need those directions, is that all they would need to make it clear to them? And then I got scared. Someone who needs those directions may be operating a car right next to me on the freeway this afternoon. Let’s be careful out there. Other than the November Breakfast meeting, our regional events have concluded for this year. The activities guys are working on some interesting events for ‘08 and I think you’ll be pleased with what you see. We should have some information

Bösendorfer Piano by Porsche Design
Big Band Jazz
Bösendorfer is one of the oldest and most well respected piano makers in the world. These are among the most coveted instruments anywhere. One might go so far as to say that they could be considered the Porsche of the piano world. Art Yuter sent this article from their web site about a new model offered in the Bösendorfer line of grand pianos.
Design by F. A. Porsche A design item – Welcome to the 21st century “In close cooperation with the world-famous Porsche Design company, we have created a masterpiece, a contemporary approach to grand piano design. In keeping with the Bösendorfer motto – "cherish traditions, transcend limits" – this new interpretation incorporates ground-breaking new features that will have a lasting impact on the development of grand piano design.”
LA Region member Roy Wiegand played trombone with the Stan Kenton Orchestra for many years. One of 5 CDs available is a tribute to Stan Kenton, and another is entitled “Whatever Floats Your Boat ‘Bone.” You can listen to audio samples at www.bigbandjazz.net/new-design/cd_stan.asp. CDs are available from Roy for $14 ea., including shipping. Call 818-980-9387 to order.

At Jordan Valley OR, US Hwy 95 turns north toward the greater Boise area. South of Nampa I stopped on the mountain road to take photos of Boise, clearly visible about 50 miles to the northeast, and a previous routing of US Hwy 95 which was narrow, twisting and probably quite dangerous due to the absence of visible guardrails.
New Meadows are, I’m sure, a continuation of the earlier highway alignment I saw near Boise and would see again on this trip. Surviving previous alignments of US Hwy 95 were frequent points of interest on this trip.

Another tourist at the Turn-Out asked if I wanted my picture taken. I obliged.
Some like I saw in Yuma, Needles, Las Vegas and New Meadows are still used as principal city streets. Others are relegated to secondary road status far from any city or town. A few can still be seen and appreciated but are abandoned. But much of our highway history simply no longer exists.
by Gordon Wingrove Foreword by Dipl. Ing. Hans Mezger From the publisher:Hailed by many as the greatest racing car of all time, the 917's story is packed with superlatives. It began with an incredible display of 25 complete cars to achieve homologation in 1969. The following year, the 917 gave Porsche its first-ever win at Le Mans and repeated the result in 1971. Meanwhile, the factory-backed JW Automotive 917s captured the world Championship of Makes for Porsche in both years. Continued on Page 5.

I spent that night in Riggins, ID in a spectacular setting on the banks of the beautiful Salmon River. Leaving Riggins the next morning to the north I left the Salmon River Canyon over an attractive and modern concrete arch suspension bridge. Gordon Wingrove worked for JW Automotive during the 917 years and saw first hand what made these cars so special. In a book that sparkles with personal experience, he combines substantial contributions by the Porsche engineers who created the car with his own incisive understanding, to produce a remarkable technical appraisal. Every aspect of the design and development of the 917 is considered, from its innovation and ruthless pursuit of performance, to the teamwork and inspirational leadership that produced such startling results.
"Uwe has grown the Porsche Motorsport activities in the United States significantly since he arrived in 2003, increasing the presence and services of PMNA in various U.S. racing platforms. He also gained the confidence of both customers and sanctioning bodies," said Hartmut Kristen, head of Porsche Motorsport worldwide.

David Bull Publishing (bullpublishing.com) has a lot of excellent books, many of which are about Porsches and motorsports. Motorbooks.com has a good selection and there are always a lot of interesting items in Excellence magazine. I’m sure you’ll do fine. Happy Hunting.

The second Dyson Porsche and the second Penske Porsche also finished in the top ten overall and the top six in class, with Andy Wallace/Butch Leitzinger/Andy Lally fourth in class and sixth overall for the #16 Dyson Porsche RS Spyder, and Sascha Maassen/Ryan Briscoe/Emmanuel Collard seventh overall and fifth in class for the #6 Penske Porsche RS Spyder. The Penske car suffered a broken steering rack and suspension damage due to an accident – resulting in a long pit stop, while the Dyson car had ignition and electrical problems – slowing the car on several occasions.
Porsche Reveals Early Stages of New Cayenne Hybrid ATLANTA, July 26, 2007 --- Porsche this week in Stuttgart demonstrated to the media a Cayenne SUV hybrid prototype, providing a glimpse of what the company will offer to consumers by the end of the decade.
Dumas/Bernhard Clinch ‘07 ALMS LMP2 Championship BRASELTON, Georgia – October 6, 2007 – Romain Dumas (France) and Timo Bernhard (Germany), with help from Patrick Long (USA), completed their season-long quest for the 2007 American Le Mans Series LMP2 drivers championship by winning their fifth class victory in a row and coming within one second of the overall win at the tenth running of the 1000-mile Petit Le Mans classic at Road Atlanta in their #7 Penske Porsche RS Spyder. "It was a perfect day for Penske Racing as we achieved many of the goals we set out to accomplish for 2007. We had already won the LMP2 team championship, and helped Porsche clinch the engine and chassis titles, and now we have won the drivers championship. The eight overall wins we have scored have far exceeded our expectations," said Tim Cindric, president of Penske Racing, Inc. "We also showed that our cars are both fast and reliable in this tough 1000-mile event," said Cindric. Making it a one-two LMP2 finish for the Porsche was the Chris Dyson (USA)/Guy Smith (England) Dyson Racing Porsche RS Spyder, which finished third overall and second in class. Dyson/Smith, who ran in the top five in class all day, earned their high finish despite the fact they were fighting the setup on the car all race.
The new Cayenne Hybrid.
Porsche is targeting average fuel consumption figures of 9.8 liters/100 kilometers in the New European Driving Cycle and about 24 miles per gallon in the US FTP cycle for the Cayenne Hybrid, and future developments may allow Porsche engineers to push towards an average fuel consumption figure of 8.9 liters/kilometer (approximately 26 miles per gallon). The Cayenne Hybrid will feature a full-hybrid design where the hybrid module (clutch and electric motor) is positioned between the combustion engine and the transmission rather than having the hybrid drivetrain branching output along various lines and in various directions via a planetary gearset. Porsche selected this design because the in-line configuration of the hybrid components are more compatible with the existing Cayenne platform, this system in testing is more fuel efficient, and because this configuration is a better fit for Porsche as it will provide improved acceleration and engine flexibility compared to a conventional Cayenne. Porsche plans to introduce similar hybrid technology in a version of its Panamera four-door Gran Turismo. The Panamera will debut in 2009, with a hybrid to follow.
