comprised of volunteers, with all profits directed to eight services of the Assistance League, benefitting more than 100,000 individuals each year. Now this is a real concours, with serious entrants and a wide variety of cars on display, as well as
America – the 911 Carrera Coupe, 911 Carrera Cabriolet, 911 Carrera S Coupe, and 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. All offer a higher level of performance thanks to their all-new flat-six engines displacing 3.6 and 3.8 liters respectively. And for the first time in a Porsche sports car, engines utilize direct fuel injection (DFI) and can be coupled with the new optional 7-speed double-clutch gearbox Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), racing inspired technology and a Porsche first. The result of these new technologies allows Porsche to once again boost performance of the 911, yet improve fuel efficiency by up to 13 percent as
measured in the European driving cycle. Maximum output of the 911 Carrera with its 3.6liter engine is up by 20 horsepower to 345. The 911 Carrera S with its 3.8-liter engine is equally impressive, up by 30 horsepower to 385. With this extra power, the Carrera S now offers a top speed of 188 mph. The new generation 911 is available for the first time with the new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), Porsche’s double-clutch gearbox. Continued on Page 3.

The seven speed gearbox combines the driving comfort of an automatic transmission with the gearshift capacity of a sequential gearbox used in race cars. Since Porsche’s double-clutch also boasts an automatic gearshift function, it replaces the former Porsche Tiptronic S automatic transmission on both the Carrera and Carrera S. PDK improves acceleration while reducing fuel consumption over the previous generation of Tiptronic S equipped 911s through optimized and adaptive gearshifts. Porsche developed this gearshift principle for racing no less than 25 years ago. It features two parallel clutches to eliminate any interruption in power delivery and eliminates even the slightest break between gears. Porsche factory drivers benefiting from this technology were able to accelerate faster than their competitors and keep both hands on the wheel while shifting gears, thus avoiding even the slightest distraction. This pioneering achievement from Porsche’s racing efforts now gives the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S even better performance. The Carrera equipped with PDK covers 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and the Carrera S reaches the same speed in 4.3 which is 0.2 seconds faster than with a manual six-speed gearbox. The customer in search of optimum driving dynamics even has the option to combine PDK with Porsche’s optional Sport Chrono Plus including Launch Control. The result is high-speed acceleration free of wheel spin from a standstill and a racing shift pattern to further boost performance. The Carrera equipped with the Sport Chrono Plus accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds while the Carrera S sprints to 60 mph in an outstanding 4.1.

Two Concours (cont.) industry celebs in the form of George Barris, Barry Meguiar and Lee Iaccoca. Getting to the entrance was somewhat nostalgic. It required walking through the gates to the Rose Bowl in an area where, when I was but a young whipper snapper, my brother and I would race our go kart when that was actually still a legal activity. And believe me, that was not recently. I even took the opportunity to pause for a moment inside the restroom building whose southeast corner served as the apex of what, as I recall, would have been turn three of the informal course of that era. The concours cars were arranged in groups distributed around the fairway. The Porsches were, with some exceptions, all in one area on a slightly raised area near a sidewalk and nearly all were 356s of various vintages. And all were quite wonderful to see. For me, one of the more notable “other” types of cars on display was a rare Pegaso from the mid ‘50s which was either very well restored or extremely well maintained, and quite pleasant to look at. Another was a very pretty O.S.C.A. roadster from the original Mille Miglia era. Many marques were well represented including Jaguar, Continued on Page 4.

Two Concours (cont.) Ferrari, Morgan, MG, Triumph and some interesting competition cars. One of these was one of the Rothmans Dakar Rally 911s. There were vendor tents along one edge of the golf course, including Meguiar’s, XKs Unlimited Jaguar and wire wheel guys, and others who were quite specialized. This is a good event not to miss. Lots of cars and people in placid, historic surroundings. Watch for the ad next spring in Porscherama for the ‘09 version. It will be the fourth annual.
Jim Fitzgerald’s 1959 356 A Coupe is a beautiful piece of restoration work. When he got the car it had mismatched front fenders, one from a 356 B which had to be replaced with an A fender. Bob Gordon photo. A judge at the LA Concours. Very serious, not talking much, but a good deal of writing going on.
Just one week later on June 8th, we hosted our own Zone 8 Concours at Burton Chace Park in Marina Del Rey. It was a beautiful day at the marina and everyone had a good time and enjoyed the always tasty lunch. I believe that our concours lunch has become famous around the Zone. We were fortunate to have some judging help from our Zone 8 Rep, Michael Dolphin. He addressed the group and reminded us all that LA is one of the oldest regions in the whole of PCA. For this, of course, we have to thank Jack and Ginny Case who originally founded the region. He also mentioned that he had recently attended a meeting with Porsche officials who he said were very interested in the entire club and its activities.
More writing.

Our Head Judge was Joe Nedza, the Concours Chair for all of Zone 8. We were also pleased to have DeJur Jones from the Grand Prix Region helping with the judging. Thanks too go to our own judges David Altemus, Bernie Kruel, Rick Whitson and Eric Noble. Jan Altemus, Jacqueline Shubitowski and Akimi Wood volunteered for the tedious registration and scoring duties, without which we still wouldn’t know who were the winners. So why have I combined the reports of these two concours into one article? The answer is judging. The Rose Bowl judges that I watched were quite serious to the point of being rather stoic in some cases. It seemed almost adversarial in nature, and really not all that friendly. And that’s just fine, since I imagine that many of the participants aspire to Pebble Beach at some time and they gain experience of that type from events like this
356s were well represented at our concours this year. And each one was a joy to behold. Where were you the first time you saw a 356? Bob Gordon photo.

one. Conversely, I watched the teams of judges at our concours and was struck with the opposite impression. It was more educational, friendly and not adversarial at all. A few photos included demonstrate this difference. So ours and other club concours serve their own purposes. While those entered in the full concours classes cer-

tainly are subjected to stringent and rigorous judging, it’s without the attendant seriousness present in more “important” concours. People have fun and learn more at club events. At least that’s what it looks like to me. So that’s my story. That’s what I saw this year at the two concours I attended in June. I’m looking forward to the Palos Verdes Concourse in September. They are looking for Porsches to be displayed. If you are interested contact Roger Ignon at rignon@edgesystem.net.
