Audi/VW Design Studio Tour By Bruce Pollock, Photos by Bob Gordon On Saturday May 24th, we were afforded a rare opportunity to visit the Audi / VW Design Studio in Santa Monica. Not open to the public, one of our board members was able to arrange for the event and it was quite a treat.

TOOELE, Utah – May 19 – After no one on the Penske Porsche Racing team thought that the feature race could possibly match the excitement of qualifying the day before, a combination of flawless driving and incisive pit strategy gave the team’s Porsche RS Spyders a one-two overall win at Miller Motorsports Park.

Ready to see what’s inside. Bob Gordon photo.
By Southern California standards it was a little gloomy that day, but there was sunshine in everyone’s eyes as we arrived in front of the Studio. The studio has identification, but not what one would call blaring; and by that I mean you could easily miss it, which I believe to be the intended effect.

Romain Dumas (France) and Timo Bernhard (Germany) took the lead for good with 35 minutes to go in the two-hour, 45-minute event after the leading de Farran/Pagenaud Acura had to pit for fuel and tires. The #7 Dumas/Bernhard Porsche had done its normal pit stop duties with a little more than an hour to go, and was poised for a non_stop finish. Design Studio Tour (Cont.) We entered the building and were escorted to the upper floor lobby, where there are some model concept vehicles from the recent past on display. The clear favorite among these was an intended reincarnation of the VW Microbus from around 2004 which has not been put into production, but one can always hope. We signed Non-Disclosure agreements and surrendered our cameras and camera-phones. This is the reason that you see only outdoor photos. And I just want you to know that I’m willing to take the potential prosecutorial risk for you, the reader, by continuing with this story.
Steve Toshiyuki’s dogs missed the design studio tour, but they did get to spend the time within Steve’s “showroom” VW Bus. Design studio staff were quite covetous. Bob Gordon photo.
We assembled in a second sort of reception area where refreshments were plentiful and the view was fantastic. This looks like a great place to work.
New Books
Then we moved into a conference room where we were treated to a fascinating, and informative presentation by Staff members and a guest speaker from Art Center College of Design.
By Bruce Pollock
Rather than reveal all the secret stuff they’re working on, the program focused on the types of things in which the designers are involved and the general framework of constraints and parameters within which they need to operate each day. These limits come from government agencies as well as internal corporate sources. And there are self-imposed restraints as well. To be sure, these folks are having the time of their lives. It’s a sort of “think tank” from which will emerge the vehicles that we all will probably be using somewhere down the line. This is a responsibility whose significance is not lost on this group at all. They take the responsibility quite genuinely. While it certainly looks to the casual observer like a full-scale playpen of sorts, it’s not just playing around. If and when it’s just playing around, that playing is based on a solid foundation of competence, history, tradition and responsibility resulting from study and training at a place like Art Center. And the result of the playing must remain within the stated parameters of the original goals of the project. It’s the application of passionate enthusiasm towards a well-defined, responsible solution. They’re not just willy-nilly dreaming up and building concept cars. What they do has to possess practicality, purpose and responsibility. And they appear to have a great deal of fun doing just that. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Porsche High Performance Driving Handbook - By Vic Elford I was quick to make time to read this book front to back, largely due to the credentials of the author and his achievements. Vic Elford is something of a Porsche legend, being one of the drivers who put Porsche on the racing map. He was the first to win the Monte Carlo Rally in a Porsche, then a week later won the 24-hour sports car race at Daytona. Elford raced 910s and 917s in both the Can Am and Trans Am series, as well as several other marques in Formula 1, Indy and even stock car racing. Five-time winner of LeMans Derek Bell said, “Since his retirement from professional racing, I’ve had the pleasure of working with him at the Porsche Owners Driving School, where he did an excellent job administrating the program ... To drive a car well has to be learned from someone with a special talent of being able to impart that knowledge gained over the years. Vic Elford has that talent.” And Brian Redman says, “There is no driver better qualified than Vic to write a book on how to drive a Porsche—or anything else for that matter. The only driver to successfully switch from driving 911 rally cars on snow and ice to racing 240-mile-per-hour Porsche 917s at LeMans—in the rain, fog and night. This book will tell you all that you need to know.” The book is a pleasant blend of stories and
June 2008
photos about the many events in which Elford has participated and/or won to reference real life situations serving to demonstrate the principles being addressed in each of the chapters. The first three chapter titles are “Comfort,” “Balance,” and “Smoothness.” There are eleven more chapters that build on the foundation created in those first three, adding detail and refinement to the overall driving technique, which can certainly be applied to any make of car, as he mentions throughout the book. It becomes a point of view which is applied to all driving situations. And that has to do with knowing what the car will do when you do something. I finally came to believe that this could easily serve as the textbook for a general driving instruction course available to anyone who wanted simply to be in control of their car at all times. Perhaps it could be included with the purchase of a new Porsche. Elford has been involved heavily with Porsche in the initial stages of Porsche’s Driving Experience program and it’s clear that he’s very interested in driver education. Within the chapter “The Equipment,” Elford shares his insights into ride control systems, new tire compounds, Tiptronic and Direct-Shift Gearbox transmissions, all of which have transformed the experience and challenge of driving a Porsche. Here, also, are many explanatory illustrations shown courtesy of Porsche, that help to clarify driving new and recently-new Porsche models. The only aspect of the book that troubled me was that I found the illustrations supporting the written description of certain principles to be further away than seemed optimum. I prefer these elements to be located close enough to one another to be digested almost simultaneously, absent of any page flipping. I ended up going through the book a second time to study the illustrations and relate them to the text. Not an unpleasant activity, and repetition does breed more understanding. In the Forward, David Hobbs says, “For those who really do intend to improve their driving habits and skills, this book is a must. It is full of tricks of the trade, essential information on how to handle certain situations, great tips on car control in all conditions, and just plain common sense. It is also a damn good read, full of some of the most fascinating experiences of one of the world’s most diverse and successful drivers.” Published by Motorbooks, the page count is 176 with 39 color and 55 black and white photos. By the time you read this it should be available from the publisher for $29.95 USD. Order from Motorbooks — www.motorbooks.com. We are making plans to award this review copy from the publisher at a future breakfast meeting.

Recent News Two New Blog Features at PCA.org. Patrick Long
PORSCHERAMA The new Cayenne Turbo S is instantly recognizable with its 21 inch alloy wheels that are housed in wheel arches painted to match the exterior color, and dual-twin sports tailpipes in brushed aluminum. Additionally, the air intake grilles and wheel arch extensions are painted the same color as the Cayenne’s body. Lava Gray Metallic, a new color that is rich yet understated, will be offered as an exclusive option for the Cayenne Turbo S.
Penske Porsche driver Patrick Long.
PCA.org is excited to have Penske Racing driver Patrick Long blogging his season as co-driver of the #6 Porsche RS Spyder. Patrick will give the ultimate insider’s view from the pinnacle of professional sports car racing. The ALMS series is going to be very competitive this year and you can follow it every step of the way from the perspective of PCA’s top ranked Porsche driver.

Panorama photographer Leonard Turner.
It seems as though all Porsche enthusiasts are also photographers. At some PCA events there are more cameras than Porsches. We are glad to have Leonard Turner, Panorama photographer, blogging for us as well. Leonard’s eye for photographing Porsches and Porsche activities is second to none. Check his blog for insider tips on how to get great Porsche shots on and off the track.
Hottest Cayenne ever will debut in the U.S. and Canada in August The new 2009 Cayenne Turbo S is Porsche’s response to the enormous demand, especially in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe and Asia, for premium brand vehicles with exclusive heritage and performance. With a 4.8 liter twin turbocharged V8 engine that delivers 550 hp, this latest Porsche SUV is the most powerful Cayenne ever produced. Remarkably, even with a 10% horsepower increase over the Cayenne Turbo, the new Cayenne Turbo S shares the identical mileage figures (based on European Operating Cycle).
The Cayenne Turbo S comes standard with air suspension, self-leveling and ride-height control, along with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). This technology combined with the standard Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and Servotronic speed- sensitive variable power steering allows the driver to enjoy the additional horsepower while still being rewarded with the handling and performance characteristics that you can only find in a Porsche SUV. The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system currently offered only on sports cars will be available on all 2009 Cayenne S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S models in conjunction with 20’’ or larger wheels. PCCB braking power is provided by six piston calipers applied to 16.4 inch ceramic discs in the front and four piston calipers and 14.56 inch discs in the rear. The standard interior of the top-of-the range Turbo S is equipped with high-end features such as sport seats with memory, carbon trim on the dashboard and door, leather interior in exclusive color combinations (Black/Havanna and Black/Steel Grey), plus a leather steering wheel with padded rim.
Vintage Racing At Its Best The San Diego Region invites you to come to one of Zone 8’s newest Social Events of the year. It’s the Coronado Speed Festival held at North Island in San Diego. This is Vintage Racing with Porsches, Ferraris, Cobras and more. Just like “back in the day,” on airport circuits. The date is September 27 and 28, 2008 at the Naval Station at Coronado, San Diego.

ALMS Utah (cont.) Patrick Long (USA) also made up a place in class when the Acura stopped, and move up two places overall to second when both LMP1 Audis had incidents on the course. Dumas/Bernhard now lead the Scott Sharp/David Brabham Acura drivers in the LMP2 championship by 28 points (86 – 58), with both Dyson Racing team driving pairings in hot pursuit (Leitzinger/Franchitti with 46 points and Dyson/Smith with 43 points). In the manufacturers championship for LMP2, Porsche has a 21_point lead over Acura, and in the team championship, Penske Racing leads Acura’s Highcroft Racing by 28 points, with Dyson Racing only four points behind. Tim Cindric, president of Penske Racing, was very proud of the team effort and the strategy that resulted in victory. "It’s been a while since our historic win at Sebring, and it was great to have another overall victory, but, more importantly, it was important to extend our lead over the Acuras, which have shown again that they are very competitive. We now have a good LMP2 points lead, but it took a perfect stint from each of our four drivers to get a one-two finish plus a good strategy and great pit work." Romain Dumas, who took the checkered flag for the winning #7 car, pointed out this is their third win in class out of four events, and, while the overall wins are nice, they are just being in the right place at the right time. "We get important points and win championships by defeating our competitors in class, but we enjoy the satisfaction of besting the Audis. It was fun racing with Lucas and the Audi, but, at the end, we had to be careful to make sure we finished." In GT2, Flying Lizard Motorsports had a momentum-builder for its upcoming appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June by finishing first and second in class with their Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs. Wolf Henzler (Germany) and Joerg Bergmeister(Germany) got a break early in the race when they received the "wave-by" from the pace car (a courtesy extended by the sanctioning body when the pace car is looking to pick up the leader while re-forming the field based on track position). The team maintained its lead throughout the event, using its large lead to plan fuel stops and driver changes – keeping the other competitors at bay.
San Diego region will host a Porsche Hospitality Tent at the track with beverages and food for Porsche Club members, and it’s a great place from which to watch the wheel to wheel racing.
Henzler/Bergmeister now lead Mueller/Farnbacher in the GT2 driver standings by one point, while the Flying Lizards lead Tafel by nine points and Porsche leads Ferrari in the manufacturers championship by six points.
