Direct Fuel Injection For ALMS Spyders Lowers Fuel Consumption and Increases Performance From PCNA ATLANTA – Following in the footsteps of the street Porsche Cayenne and 911, the sports prototype Porsche RS Spyder now profits from direct fuel injection technology (DFI). The new engine, with which Porsche underlines its role as technology leader in energy efficiency, celebrated its race premiere with an LMP2 victory in the

11,000 with DFI technology it meant stepping into totally new territory." During the design and development of the engine, synergies of product areas and motorsport departments were utilized to a large extent. "Right from the beginning there was a lively exchange," reminisces Thomas Laudenbach. "We had already recognized the advantages of this technology at the start of the RS Spyder project and adapted them to the very special requirements of motorsport, always in close consultation with our colleagues in the standard development department. The methods and insights we obtained from our co-operation are of con-

Recent News Unsolicited Testimonial from LA Region member Bernie Kreul 9-16-08 To whom it may concern RE: Porsche’s backing their product In August 2008, while returning to Southern California from Colorado, a major engine failure occurred in my 2003 Carrera. While driving through the middle of Utah (far from any civilization), a large warning light appeared on the dash stating that I must add oil immediately. I pulled off at the nearby exit and added oil. I noticed that the oil was going straight to the ground under the car, in fact, all of the oil was leaking out.
The Direct Fuel Injection engine for the American Le Mans Series Porsche RS Spyders.
American Le Mans Series as Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) took the class win at Mid-Ohio in July. The power output of the successful 2006 and 2007 championship winning Porsche has increased with the new engine from 476 to 503 hp (370 kW) at 10,000 RPM. Maximum torque rose from 370 Nm (273 ft. lbs.) at 7,500 revs to 385 Nm (284 ft. lbs.) at 8,500 revs. The most compelling feature of the DFI version of the successful Porsche 3.4-litre V8 motor is its improved energy efficiency – an important element in endurance racing. Despite an improved power output, fuel consumption was significantly reduced. "After reaching a very high level with the previous engine we raced, we had to put considerable efforts into the development of the direct fuel injection unit in order to significantly improve performance and efficiency," says Thomas Laudenbach, Head of Motorsport Development /PowerTrain. "In order to achieve revs of up to
siderable value for future development projects involving DFI technology." "Thanks to the substantial increase of energy efficiency there’s no rise in the absolute fuel consumption despite the significant hike in performance. On the contrary – we’re even a bit lower," said Laudenbach. Another advantage of the new DFI engine: At partial load – for example during the many caution phases of long distance races - the engine can be run extremely lean. This further reduces fuel consumption and was not possible with the intake manifold fuel injection which was raced previously. Moreover, new options open up for the controlling of highly dynamic processes like, for example, gear shifting at full throttle. Such options were not fully utilized before. "Competition in the LMP2 class is at an extremely high level and it gets tougher race by race," says Hartmut Kristen, Head of Motorsport at Porsche. "Therefore now is exactly the right time to race the new engine."
Needless to say I was towed to the nearest dealer in Salt Lake City, Utah. After waiting for the transmission to be removed I was informed that the bearing holding the intermediate shaft had failed. This caused the shaft to wobble, causing the timing to go off, the valves hitting the pistons, destroying the engine. The incident was reported to Porsche since the car only had 30,000 miles on the odometer. Porsche not only responded, they replaced the engine (including a new block). My conclusion………Its not just advertising when Porsche says they stand behind their product. Bernard Kreul PCA member, LA Region

All Cayenne S Transsyberias will be equipped with air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which electronically adjusts the shock absorbers to achieve superior ride and handling characteristics. The permanent all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system divides the torque between the front and rear, with a 62% rear-bias for greater on-road driving dynamics.
The Cayenne S Transsyberia is based on the Cayennes that won one of the most grueling endurance races in the world. The rally marathon, which is held every spring, is a two-week race that traverses Russia, Siberia and Mongolia and covers over 4,400 miles. It is called, simply, the Transsyberia Rally, and slightly modified Porsche Cayenne S models have won this brutally demanding event three times in a row.
With the exception of the meteor grey metallic with crystal silver metallic combination, all Cayenne S Transsyberia will be available with contrasting colored 18-inch Cayenne S II wheels. Contrasting color is also used on the air intake vent fins, exterior mirror housing and extended bi-plane roof spoiler. In addition, the Cayenne S Transsyberia can be customized to include the

Just as the Weissach-developed Cayenne S Transsyberia competition models were based on the street version of the Cayenne S, this 2010 special edition, with less than 600 units earmarked for North America, will feature the 405 horsepower, 4.8 liter naturally aspirated, direct fuel injected V8 engine lifted directly from the Cayenne GTS. The Tiptronic S six-speed automatic transmission with a 4.11:1 final drive ratio is standard.
ATLANTA --- September 8, 2008 --- Winning Porsches come in many shapes, and nowhere is the competitive Porsche Motorsport DNA more evident than in the latest version of the thriving Cayenne range – the new race-inspired 2010 Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia.

The Cayenne S Transsyberia proudly shows off its winning pedigree. It will be available exclusively in four different color combinations – black with orange accents or crystal silver metallic, also with orange accents. For those desiring a more "stealthy" color combination, the Cayenne S Transsyberia will also available in either black with meteor grey metallic highlights or meteor grey metallic with crystal silver metallic highlights.

Porsche 996 The Essential Companion™ By Adrian Streather This is a 656 page paperback book that appears to me to be an invaluable resource to any 996 owner. I won’t try to convince you that I actually read this entire book. At 656 pages, just a thumb-through cursory inspection took a good deal of time. But thumb-through I did and was
PORSCHERAMA enticed enough by its contents to stop and fully read parts here and there. This book is published by Veloce Publishing Ltd. in England, who publish many excellent books specific to a wide variety of automotive marques and subjects. They do a good job selecting the right people to author their books. In my perusal of the book I found the publisher’s own descriptions to be a factual and accurate representation of the contents. The back cover reads: “The complete practical guide to the Porsche 996, with a forward by Jürgen Barth. This book is the fourth to continue the tradition established by Adrian Streather’s earlier Porsche 911 books, which cover the 964, Super Carrera and 993 respectively.” “Everything a 996 owner really needs to know, plus a huge amount of useful information, is contained within the covers of this book, in which every known model and version is described in detail.” “With over 1500 photos and extensive appendices, this fact-packed book is an absolute MUST for any 996 owner or would-be owner.” And from what I saw, none of that is an exaggeration of even the smallest proportion. The author, Adrian Streather, is a well-established author and this is his sixth book. As reported by the publisher and evidenced by any exposure to the book, his passion and enthusi-

The Book of the Porsche 356 By Brian Long The Book of the Porsche 356 is a newly revised, reformatted and completely remade edition of what the publisher refers to as a definitive work. There are more than 100 new photographs with color throughout the book. There are production totals and specifications as well as helpful buying/restoration advice. The author, Brian Long, was born in Coventry, England, is a trained mechanical engineer and himself a Porsche 911 owner. Now living in Japan, he has written over 40 books, several of which are about Porsche cars, and has enjoyed strong links with the factory for many years. The book covers the full story of the Porsche 356, and the racing and rallying cars which evolved from the original. There has been added a section which addresses 356 Replica cars. Other readers report that this book is great and is full of wonderful photographs. It, among others, should be considered required for reading and reference for any 356 owner, would-be owner or general Porsche fanatic. Like the 996 book above, this one is published by Veloce Publishing Ltd. The Porsche Rally Story By Laurence Meredith The last in our trilogy from Veloce Publishing is described as a collection of exciting, actionpacked photographs from the Porsche Archive. Veloce says this is an international story that will appeal to Porsche enthusiasts all around the world. I agree.
