Porsches At Monterey From PCNA At the 36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 14-16, the sound of the initial stirrings of over 450 race cars will be complimented by the exquisite growl of the newest, most daring and most advanced vehicle Porsche has produced to date — the 2010 Porsche Panamera gran turismo.

Mount Wilson Fun Run & Tour By Bruce Pollock Sunday, June 14 was the day I rediscovered how close we all live to so many world famous, world class attractions here in Southern California. Today it is Mount Wilson Observatory. A short, fun-filled run up Angeles Crest Highway to the home of what, in the words of the Mount Wilson brochure, is “The most productive astronomical observatory in history. This was the preeminent facility in the world in both stellar and solar studies during the first half of the twentieth century.” The day started out rather overcast, turning to reluctant then full sunshine as we traversed Angeles Crest Highway to Mount Wilson.
The 2010 Porsche Panamera.
Along with the North American debut of the 2010 Panamera, four special cars with significant American connections will also be on site — all on loan from the new Porsche Museum in Germany: The 1960 Porsche Type 718 Formula 2 racing car, which gave Porsche its first Formula 2 world title and was driven in 1961 by Californian Dan Gurney, is making its North American debut; the 1962 Porsche Type 804 Formula 1 racer, which was the car that brought Gurney to his French Grand Prix win that year, which has not been in North America since the 1960s; the 1962 Porsche Type 718 W-RS 8-cylinder Spyder, in Continued on Page 2.

Camarillo Dawn Drive By Martin Holford
On July 26th a small group PCA members met for a sunrise fun run to Camarillo Airport via the Santa Monica mountains. The cars , just like the parent company were diverse and very special. From a 356 to a Carrera GT we spanned the Porsche spectrum. With the cool morning air, virtually no Continued on Page 3.

Mount Wilson (cont.) banking, fostering certainty as they approach one after the other. Although I’m sure the Sheriff’s Rescue Team would argue otherwise, the quality and predictability of the road’s configuration and surface make it seem as though it is actually difficult to get into trouble — as long as you’re paying attention to what you’re doing.
worked there. Don is a spry 90 years old now and knows everything you could possibly want to know about the place. And he loves sharing it with visitors, as, clearly, do all the other staff members at the facility.

They’re doing important stuff on the mountain. Constant observation and data recording of Solar conditions continues there every day. This is the kind of place from which come news stories about the impact of the Sun’s activities on Earth. It was especially fun to stand for a moment on the bridge leading to the big telescope where Albert Einstein stood and see some of the places where he spent time while he was there in 1931.
Our genuine “proof of attendance” shot. Photo by Art Yuter.
The quality of the docent staff is unsurpassed. Our docent was Don Nicholson. He lived at Mount Wilson when young, with his parents who
We also saw a chair that noted astronomer Edwin P. Hubble used - it is placed prominently in the large telescope building where everyone can see it. The story related by Mr. Nicholson allowed as how it most likely is not the actual chair utilized by Hubble in a photo from the time, but it has been placed, and stays there in his honor.
Our tour of the smaller telescope revealed staff members who monitor the Sun’s activity . There is a very old elevator used by the staff to ride up to the top of the tower and adjust the mirror there. Rides were offered, but there were no takers in our group, but later we saw the astronomer out there with a passenger and they were walking around the catwalk at the top of the tower, waving to anyone looking. It became clear that there were far more great stories than time allowed. This place is soooo not Corporate. These certainly appear to be folks who would be doing this with or without compensation of any sort other than just continuing to be allowed to do it. So the tour came to an end, we ate the lunches we had brought from “down below,” the fog and clouds began to roll in, and we motored on down the hill, where soon the sun was shining brightly again. And we just met some folks who were observing the sun do that! For the whole Mount Wilson story, go to: www.mtwilson.edu when you have some time to digest everything there. And plan a trip. It’s great fun, good exercise and very educational.
