Porsche Museum Holds Treasure Trove of History By RONAN MCGRATH 11/09/2010 Autoweek -- Reprinted here with permission. Photos by the author.

Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche shared one characteristic with other automotive icons such as Enzo Ferrari and E. L. Cord: a complete concentration on building the future and little interest in the past. However, in more recent times, automakers have come to realize the value of their history, Porsche among them. In a quiet corner with no signs in the Porsche museum in Zuffenhausen, Germany, are a number of fireproof vaults and a huge library. This is Porsche's DNA. Available to researchers and writers, hundreds of thousands of period photographs and negatives are stored, along with all company publications. It's likely that everyone who has ever written a book on the marque has spent a lot of time here.
Ferdinand Porsche was near the end of his life when the first Porsche car was built in 1948. But he had been building and designing cars for almost 50 years, including a hybrid at the turn of the 20th century, the iconic supercharged Mercedes-Benz SSK sports cars of the 1920s, the rear-engined Auto Union Silver Arrows, the Volkswagen, and finally, along with his son, the car that bore his name.

Most of the records of Porsche's design firm were lost in World War II, but the archives still contain Porsche family albums and photographs going back to 1900. The main focus of the library, however, is from 1948 onward. Period photographs of every Porsche produced are catalogued, as are photographs from every competitive event the factory entered, plus many others. Most have never been published. A huge collection of rare catalogs and posters is also stored, as is virtually every works manual. Jens Torner, the Porsche archivist with primary

Panamera Weekend The premier raffle prize at our concours in July from title sponsor the auto Gallery was the use of a Panamera for a weekend. Lucky winners Joanne and Larry Markham redeemed their prize on October 15th and set out for a Panamera weekend in the Carmel Valley. Larry’s thank you letter to our President, David Altemus, sums up the car and the experience quite well; “Joanne and I want to thank the LA PCA and the Auto Gallery for the weekend in a new Panamera S. What a car. Smooth, quiet and very responsive, what a torque monster. 2000 rpm, 80 mph. Great gas mileage for a four door car that is capable of blinding speed when needed of course. Race of Champions International Racing Elite to Compete in Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Race Car From PCNA - Stuttgart/Atlanta - November 16 -The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is the most-produced race car in history. To date, over 2,000 vehicles have been delivered to customers around the world. And now, the 450 hp GT racer from Weissach belongs to the official competition cars at the Race of Champions, where a number of the world's most talented and famous racing celebrities from the most diverse disciplines come together in Dusseldorf, Germany on November 27 and 28.
Joining the ranks of the world class starter field is Porsche pilot Jeroen Bleekemolen. The 29-year-old driver from the Netherlands won the GTC class of the American Le Mans Series with Tim Pappas this season at the wheel of a 911 GT3 Cup and knows the car from many years of racing. In 2008 and 2009 he won the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, the fastest international brand trophy series. In 2008 he earned a victory in the LMP2 class at the Le Mans 24 Hours with a Porsche RS Spyder.

Martin Holford martinholford@me.com In Dusseldorf, Bleekemolen will be up against the likes of Formula 1 pilots Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel as well as World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb and World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx. "I'm proud to be part of the Race of Champions for the first time," says Bleekemolen. "Obviously, I'm hoping to contest as many heats as possible with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup - not one of the participating drivers knows the car like I do." The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, based on the road-legal 911 GT3 RS sports car, is powered by a 3.8-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine delivering 450 hp. The spectacular-sounding race exhaust system features a fully controlled catalytic converter. The rearengine concept and the wide track give the racing 911 excellent traction and razor-sharp handling. Pilots operate the sequential six-speed gearbox manually. Power from the high-revving engine (max. 8,500 rpm) is distributed to the wide rear wheels via a mechanical differential. "I'm very pleased that the racing elite from all over the globe will be seen driving the world's most produced race car, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup," says Hartmut Kristen, head of Motorsport at Porsche. "I'm sure that fans and drivers alike will have just as much pleasure in the spectacular sound and the superb handling of this vehicle." This marks the return of the Race of Champions to Germany since its first meet here in 1989. The event will be broadcast by the German national TV, ZDF. "Aktuelle Sportstudio" provides coverage on Saturday, with "Sportreportage" broadcasting the spectacular action from Dusseldorf's Esprit Arena on Sunday. Get more information and follow the action on the event's official site www.raceofchampions.com.

New material is always being added, including rare collections of racing posters from around the world, sometimes donated by collectors. A varied collection of memorabilia is stored. On a shelf sits one of the original styling models for the 917 which was never built, alongside a
Brakes, suspension are wonderful, plenty of room for a big guy like me. PDK trans very impressive. All the controls are where you want them, navigation system, radio in the center of the dash also shows up in the small gauge next to the tach, very helpful keeping your eyes straight ahead. Very docile around town in traffic and when you want blistering acceleration, handling, switch on the sport mode. For a big car handles of course like a Porsche. Again thanks for a great weekend. Larry & Joanne Markham” The concours also went very well for Larry who won the C-1 class with his 1959 356 A Coupe with sunroof, scoring 324 points. All in all, TWO great weekends.

A somewhat gleeful smile and reassuring wave . . . and the Markhams are off on their Panamera Weekend!
Of course, it helps to be able to walk downstairs to the museum and the attached garage. On the floor, an original Formula One car is being serviced, alongside the 1970 Le Mans-winning 917 and some other jaw-dropping cars. A few of the rarest customer cars make it to this, the best Porsche garage of the lot.
The very first Porsche catalog.
Given the lack of interest in history that the Porsches had, it's amazing that it all survived intact and became the authoritative source for those with a keen interest in Porsche's past.

But that's about it. Original works drawings are kept in a separate archive in Weissach, Germany. Porsche is not convinced of the longevity of digital storage, so all original drawings are also photographed using traditional cameras. In addition to being the executive editor of Motor Trend magazine, author Matt Stone is a member of our PCA region and has done a fine job collecting the information for this project with the help and cooperation of the McQueen family. He has masterfully sorted and clarified fact from “myth.”
New Books McQueen’s Machines; The Cars and Bikes of a Hollywood Icon; Paperback Edition By Matt Stone; Forward by Chad McQueen By Bruce Pollock I was surprised to learn that November 7th, 2010 marked the 30th anniversary of Steve McQueen’s death. And as is mentioned in the material promoting this paperback edition of Matt Stone’s informative and entertaining report on McQueen’s rolling stock, “after all this time, Steve McQueen’s legendary title of ‘King of Cool’ remains intact.”
This book belongs in your book collection and at twenty bucks, there should be no second thoughts about its acquisition.
There is also no question that he was a Porsche guy, albeit not exclusively.
ISBN-13: 978-0-7603-2866-8
I found Stone’s book thoroughly engaging, and a pleasure to consume. The book offers behind-the-scenes stories from McQueen’s family, as well as never-before published photos of McQueen and the machines he loved. Included are vehicles he owned, those he raced, and others that he drove, rode or that appeared in his films. It also includes a wealth of details about his racing career, movie stunt work and his car and motorcycle collecting.
As is often the case, of course, it’s available just in time for Holiday gift giving as well.
McQueen’s Machines - Paperback edition By: Matt Stone; Forward by Chad McQueen 176 Pages - Paperback, 8.25” x 10.625” 219 color photographs The book highlights Steve McQueen’s life as a passionate car enthusiast, racer and motorcyclist. The stories of some lesser known details about certain scenes in “Bullit,” “The Thomas Crown Affair,” “The Great Escape,” and “Le Mans” are priceless and quite entertaining.

A Century of Great Automotive Writing Edited By: Darwin Holmstrom and Melinda Keefe
It seems to me to have great potential to fill several afternoons with enjoyable reading.
This is an interesting collection of automotive writings by a wide variety of authors. It is said to be the first ever anthology of automotive writing.
Life Is A Highway: A Century of Great Automotive Writing
Contributors include: Peter Egan, Peter Golenbock, Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., Hunter S. Thompson, Stephen King, Jean Lindamood, Jamie Kitman, Tom McCahill, Ken Purdy, David E. Davis, Jr.., L.J.K. Setright, Jay Leno, Gordon Baxter, Robert Daley, Peter M. DeLorenzo, Joe Oldham, Patrick Bedard, Ted West, Warren Weith, Jane R. Bade, David Morley, Martin Bunn, H.L. Barber, James Mitchell Clark, William F. Nolan, Steve Smith, Henry Keck, Edwin Ketchum, James Dalton, Arthur Brisbane, Chris McCall, Scott R. Lear, Margaret O. Hyde and Jim Kenzie. The publishers describe the book as a collection of the best automotive writing to date. It captures the joys of the automobile, the historical circumstances of its creation and the major events, people and cars involved. They say this book includes the most significant writings and musings about the automobile ever recorded, featuring works from some of the most wellknown authors and publications of the automobile’s first 100-plus years. I have so far read the entries from David E. Davis Jr, and Brock Yates. I found both to be thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating. I’m a big
