Art Center Run and Tour By Bruce Pollock On Saturday the 14th of April, the dawn broke bright, sunny and without rain. Linen-white clouds and a brilliant blue sky offered solid testimony as to why we put up with so much to continue living here in Los Angeles. Also, this actually is really a happening place! Stuff goes on here. I mean Global-Impact sorts of stuff. And Art Center in Pasadena is one of the places where that stuff is going on. Our “Run” was mostly freeway leading to the quiet neighborhood overlooking the Rose Bowl,

Art Center (cont.) accessed via Linda Vista and then Lida Street to the Art Center College of Design. On a shiny red ‘63 VW Bug, belonging to our host Stewart Reed, we saw the final arrow directing us to our parking area on the Art Center grounds. We parked, talked and took in the ample gorgeous views available before assembling for the tour. While gathered outside, we got some Art Center history from Stewart Reed. The institution was founded in 1930, in its original location on West 7th street in Los Angeles, by an advertising man named Edward A. “Tink” Adams. His vision was to teach real-world skills to artists and designers and prepare them for leadership roles in advertising, publishing and industrial design. To do that he brought together a faculty of working professionals from those fields. That is the heart of the matter at Art Center. The difference between simply knowing about things and adding to that knowledge the ability to produce and do those things known about. It’s the working professional aspect that fosters the creative, inventive environment of the school, while keeping one foot on the ground so to speak. A sort of “That’s great, but will it fly?” point of view. During our tour we were able to view students preparing their projects for the end of the term. This is a group of able young people who know what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. And they’re having fun. While surely arduous at times, there’s a great deal of fun to be had in a certain, purpose-driven environment like this. Students are productive and learn how and why in the

Art Center (cont.) process. And with fun comes responsibility. While in one of the studios, we were privileged to see one of the final presentation models and hear the student designer talk about his project. A further delight came when he introduced his mother to the group who had come to see his project. She’s a proud mom, and rightly so.

This was a very interesting, enjoyable, enlightening and inspirational event. Quite refreshing. Stewart Reed is certainly one of the preeminent designers in the world today. At the same time he is the very definition of the word “approachable.” His unassuming and enthusiastic manner create an atmosphere where people become interested in and feel free to talk about and consider the particular subject being discussed.

This particular vehicle concept was part of a group of concepts for EcoMotors. They are essentially furthering development of the internal combustion engine, with “Power Density” as their Holy Grail. It’s quite fascinating and you can learn more at their web site: ecomotors.com. There is much to be seen on the internet about Stewart Reed, Art Center, EcoMotors and other related subjects. Here are some:

artcenter.edu stewartreeddesign.com ecomotors.com After the formal portion of the tour, we were treated to an impromptu viewing of photos Stewart had on his phone of the project he’s working on for Peter Mullin . Mullin has assembled a team to build a body for an unfinished 1939 Bugatti Type 64 Coupe Chassis. Photos and story can be accessed on the “Media” tab at stewartreeddesign.com.

That’s a desirable characteristic for instruction and learning of any sort. As Chairman of Transportation Design at Art Center, Stewart Reed contributes greatly to there being others like him tomorrow. I believe that sort of effect is exactly what “Tink” had in mind when he founded Art Center more than 80 years ago.
