PCA-LA At A Glance PCA-LA is 550 diverse Porsche owners, We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.
Subscriptions PORSCHERAMA is available to nonmembers of PCA-LA at the rate of $’12 per year. Send requests to 19’1 ’1 Newell Road, Malibu 90265, alor’g with ~ check, payable to PCA-LA.

3 Christmas time is almost here again. With it the year is just about over. In retrospect PCA-LA has had a very good year. Quite a few fun events and meetings over the past eleven months. There is just one more left for this year. That is our Annual meeting/Christmas Party on the Queen Mary, December 13th. Get your reservations in early as it looks like there will be quite a crowd from the early returns, I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who have helped the Club this past year. If I listed names I could probably fill the majority of the newsletter so instead, let me just say thanks to you all -- event sponsors, advertisers, club members and my fellow board members -you’ve been great this year. In 1982 we are going to see a decrease in the number of monthly meetings. There will be our four quarterly "New Member" meetings (keep in mind all you seasoned members are invited) along with six General Membership meetings and the Annual Meeting/Christmas Party. This will leave one month dark -- probably the Parade month, June. For 1982 the old saying of "quality not quantity" holds true. Watch the January issue of PORSCHERAMA for the coming year’s schedule -- you’ll like it.
WHEW~ We made it, and on time (at least at this point) with the final issue of the year~ We were all prepared to make this our Swan Song -but for some reason no one else seems to want this job -- at least no one has come forward. So instead of saying so long and thanks for all you support, we’ll just thank all of the contributors and helpers we’ve had throughout the year and encourage all of you to share yourselves with the club through the newsletter and make our job easier. This month’s cover is a mini-review of the year (we could use more pictures). The Cover feature is your oppoturnity to share an idea, story, opinion, pictures, etc.,etc. January will feature a story and pictures of the Reno/Tahoe Tour. We’re looking for ideas for February, March, April, Welcome to new advertister, club member. Dave Bouzaglou, Toad Racing Ent. Have a wonderful holiday season and a I00 Point New Year~ See you at the Christmas Party. ConnieLarknAnn
Now it is time for apologies. We received word at the end of October that we could host a Zone 8 Brunch for Porsche’s Chief Stylist Tony Lapine in late November. Arrangements were hurriedly made and flyers sent out -- all for naught. Shortly after mailing the flyers, we were informed the Factory had cancelled Lapine’s tour. Sorry for the anticipation -- hope the opportunity arises again. Once again -- thanks for 1981 -- let’s look forward to 1982.~

Last month I wrote about getting started in time trialing and the basic procedures most of us have gone through to get involved in this sport, This month I thought l’d_take this subject and get a little more advanced, share some feelings and experiences, so that some of you who are thinking about taking your car on to a track, might know what you can look forward to. As stated last month, a lot of us started in on slaloms, and from time to time found ourselves stretching out on to "real" race courses. After you overcome the initial reticence to really make the car perform like Porsches are supposed to, you get bit by the time trial bug. It’s been my experience that one of the first thi~gs people do is start looking like a racer. You have this perfectly stock car, but if you get your own helmet, drivers suit, gloves and the works, you’ll feel much better and certainly go faster. The next step in this progression will probably be to alter the exhaust system so the car now sounds like a race car and you’ll go even faster. Some people I know have made a life’s study of exhaust systems and come up with really exotic ones. Maybe next, probably after riding in someone elses car, you’ll go for a race seat, like Recaro or the like. Now the car’s looking better (more like a racer should be) and certainly feels better, Actually, of the things mentioned so far, the seat will cause you to go faster. You have complete lateral support, no sliding, and you’re becoming one with the car. Studies have been made wherein it has been shown that all things being equal, the addition of a race seat will improve lap times.
Next, you’ll probably want to lower the car because that’s what racers look like, and while you’re doing this someone will start talking about sway bars and heavy duty springs and of course you don’t want your car leaning like it looks stock so you’ll go for this. All this while you are resisting the temptation to go for race wheels and tires as they are too
expensive and besides youIre just as quick on your’XWX’s. Then one day, after you’ve bee~ discussing how you don’t want to spend the money, in a moment of weakness your wife (or other person) says, "you enjoy racing so much, why don’t you buy those tires you’ve been talking about so much." That’s all the permission you needed. You look through "Panorama," "Porscherama’~" ask everybody in sight, and finally turn up some wheels. Now, for the ultimate racer experience, you go to Carroll Shelby’s Goodyear place, plunk down $400° plus, and just like Richard Petty, you are now a racer. Oh WOW. Wherever you go, inthe office, at home, you talk and ~alk about these new wheels, and then comes the day you get to use them.
However, it looks like you may have opened a whole new can of worms° You’ve got a flyer that there’s going to be a Riverside event and you absolutely must go and use these wonderful new toys you’re going to put at each corner. But wait, -you don’t want to be caught with your Porsche original equipment jack, so you scrounge around and maybe find a used one, or a cheapee at Sears (friend, you’ve only just begun to spend money). On the side of these lovely race tires it says, "not for highway use." What this means is that you’re going to have to get them to the track somenow. Well, you spend one whole evening figuring out how your going to get four race wheels into your Porsche along with all the other assorted goodies you’ve got including your new jack. Looks like wife (or other person) is going to have to come along in a support vehicle just to handle all your stuff. continued on page 6

MEANINGFUL MESSAGES FOR MEMBERS
Now, let’s welcome in new members this month:
It’s December and the snow is covering the ground and trees, and the Porsche is up on blocks in my heated garage waiting for the Spring thaw. Well, this is how it might be this month if we weren’t living in sunny(?) Southern California. We have a lot to be thankful for since we can effectively be playing in our Porsches year ’round without worrying about snow, and salt, and ice, and excess amounts of rain taking their toll on our German playthings.
Terry Rice
Now, what does this have to do with Member~ ship you might ask? Well, first of all I had to get your attention - and secondly, if you’ve read this far, then I’ve succeeded. What I really brought you all here for was to talk about the club. When prospective members’ inquiries are sent direct to National PCA headquarters, a reply is sent, which says that "PCA is a National club with local regions..." What that means is you cannot belong to PCA if you don’t belong to a local region -- which means no PANORAMA, no Parade, no PCA badges, etc. Now it’s up to the local region to establish the eligibility requirements for a Porsche owner to belong to the local region. Some regions (such as one located near Long Beach) restrict their membership to those members that will be active in the region’s activities° Some members are very busy and donIt have time to help or participate in activities all the time, which is understandable. We all have to "take care of business" occasionally, but every member should understand that the club only operates with volunteer effort. That means eve~ event, every membership meeting, every issue of PORSCHERAMA, and eve~thing that has anything to do with PCA/LA is done by volunteers. so, the next time you get PORSCHERAMA late or you don’ t thi nk somethi ng i n the cl ub is being handled the right way, think about offering some of your time and effort to make PCA/LA the best region in all of PCA. We CAN do it with your help~

MEMBERSHIP SURVEY RESULTS
TECK TALK continued
I know I promised that I would have the results last month, but I just started enjoying having a vacation and completely shirked my responsibilities and didn’t get any article ready for the old press deadline (shame on me). The response to our Membership Survey was the best ever for any survey we have conducted in PCA/LA. You all were so kind to return your questionnaires and I wanted to show you some of the results, since the Board of Directors will be using this information to plan activities for next year. Response to question about PCA/LA related interests (4 choices possible) - results are expressed as percentages of responses: INTEREST Technical Speed Events PANORAMA Rally Social Tours Concours Gymkhana Other Restoration PORSCHERAMA

Well, you get out to the track, proudly mount the new race wheels, ask at least fourteen people what tire pressure they carry and start off to the pre-grid. Halfway there, you stop, say "my GAWD," something must be wrong, get out of the car, walk around it to see why this beautiful Porsche .that hasalways handled so well now feels like a truck. Everything looks o.k. so you proceed. The starter gives you the flag and off you go. The car is handling peculiarly intially until you build up some speed and then wonders of wonders, you go through a turn AND IT STICKS. What a thrill. You are finally a racer. After a couple of laps of this when you are really beginning to enjoy the experience of race tires, you come to the realization of just how slow you’re going in spite of all this wonderful cosmetic work you’ve done to be a racer. All of this will lead us into next month. As this is my last month as Tech Chairman, I want to thank everybody who has come forward to help, give advice and just been there. It’s been a fun experience and I know next year will even be bett~.

For you statistic buffs, there are all sorts of ways. to interpre~t this but loud and clear is the message that folks really want a lot of technical information. Occupations range from Accountant to Police Captain. But, WHO is the "Mercenary Fighter
The responses to the other questions ran the full gamut and show the diversity that exists and is the strength of PCA/LA. Thanks to all of you for responding to our survey.

ODDS AND ENDS Last year just before the Winston 500 Stock Car Race at Ontario Speedway we had our monthly meeting at the Speedway and the featured speaker was Kyle Petty. Those of you who were present might find the following article especially interesting, reprinted from the GREENSBORO DAILY NEWS, Thurs., Aug. 27, 1981. KYLE BLACK-FLAGGED IN OWN BACK YARD Daily News Randolph Bureau ASHEBORO - NASCAR driver Kyle Petty was driving along the home stretch July 7 when he was caught for speeding, The 21-year-old son of race car driver Richard Petty was stopped on the U.S. 220 bypass between Randleman and Level Cross and charged with driving 68 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone. He was on his way home to Level Cross after competing in the Daytona 500 -- where he wasn’t going fast enough. He finished sixth in that race.
Randolph County District Court Judge William Neely, who heard Petty’s case Tuesday, reduced the speeding charge to exceeding a safe speed and ordered him to pay $31 court costs. Neely, who said he had had preachers and lawyers in court for speeding but never a NASCAR driver, said reducing the charge in such cases is "fairly standard." Petty did not appear in court. "Yea, I got caught, No big deal," the race car driver said Wednesday. Petty pleaded guilty to the iesser charge which added two instead of three points to his driving record. "I drove all the way back from Daytona and got caught in my own back yard," he said. "That’.s the way it goes, isn’t it ’.
A special thanks to Judd Boykin for providing the above.

December is upon us already and for PCA-LA that means one thing - the annual meeting and Christmas Party. This year’s fling will be held in the Windsor Room of the Queen Mary (also, it’s a trial balloon for our projected 1984 Parade efforts). It’ll be a mid-day affair with a no-host bar, a very nice buffet brunch and the presentation of the 1982 Board and 1981 year-end awards, As usual there.will be many nice door prizes, See you there~
Next year’s Featured Marque at the Monterey Historic Auto Races will be Porsche. We’re definitely planning a PCA-LA contingent. We’re going to make a good effort to get 10 to 15 rooms together around the Carmel area. Even if we have trouble doing this we’ll still be able to arrange caravans for the drive up to Carmel. It’ll be a sensational event - do anything you can to get a room up there for the August 20 - 22 weekend.
Please feel free to speak to any Board Our November Board meeting brought out some member if you have any requests or important thoughts for our 1982 PCA-LA suggestions for our 1982 PCA-LA calendar. calendar. It was re-emphasized that the Have a great Holiday Season ’81~ average PCA-LA member has a very full calendar - in the LA area we’re blessed ~,I with a multitude of options when it comes~__pd~.,y?{_~ to our recreational hours and funds. As an effort to make PCA-LA more attractive and beneficial to its members we’re changing the emphasis of the calendar. Of course there will be a full schedule of Zone 8 competitive events (Concours, Rally, Time Trials) throughout the year. But next year we’d like to get back to some more tours --perhaps one-day photo rallies with picnics or some two-day trips to San Simeon or Las PERSONALIZED SERVICEFORPORSCHES Vegas or even a three day run to Tahoe or Yosemite. That type of event harkens back 3906 Grandview Blvd. to the PCA-LA of a few years ago, before Los Angeles, California 90066 the competitive atmosphere of Zone 8 events became so developed. SUBJECT:
Legislative Liaison Bulletin No. 81-3
In late spring, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a proposal to revise the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208, Occupant Restraint Systems. Three alternatives were proposed: 1- Reverse the order of required phase-in of passive restraints (i.e. 1983 for small cars, 1984 for mid-size cars, and 1985 for large cars, instead of the reverse) 2- Require passive restraints on all cars starting in 1983 3- Rescind the standard in its entirety.
In June, PCA issued a Statement of Opinion to NHTSA to be entered in the official docket. PCA’s position recommended Alternative 3, to completely rescind the Standard, on the grounds that mandatory seat belt laws would be far more effective, and far less costly, in saving lives. Data were provided to support this argument. We are happy to report that ON OCTOBER 22, 1981, NHTSA ADMINISTRATOR RAYMOND PECK ANNOUNCED THE DECISION TO COMPLETELY RESCIND THE PASSIVE RESTRAINT REQUIREMENT. And so, the standard no longer exists, and automobile manufacturers will NOT have to supply a passive restraint system. This marks what we will joyfully term the End of the Air Bag. Now Porsche owners will continue to receive three-point belts in their vehicles, which, WHEN USED, will be far more effective than passive restraints " Please urge your members to do their part in automotive safety - WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT~ Issued byRobert C.
