Wlnnlng In A Bathtub--A Concours Success Story This month’s cover article is about our ~980 Parade Manhattan Concours winner, Ken Ito, and his ~965 356SC coupe. Ken joined PCA-LA in ~976 to learn about Porsches. Never did he expect to be an "expert" on concoursing. He feels his knowledge was the culmination of his inquisitiveness, shared experiences by other concours enthusiasts and maintaining high personal standards, The first attempt at a Zone 8 concours event in ~977 set Ken toward numerous trophies since. His major awards have been: ~977 Zone 8 Street Class, ~977 356 Registry Overall Street, ~978 Parade Class & Division, ~979 356 Registry Overall Concours and, of course, the ~980 Parade Manhattan Trophy. Ken first saw his ~965 356SC coupe in ~974 when the owner pulled up alongside at a stop sign with a lawnmower in the front seat. He asked the owner if he was interested in selling the 356SC
and the owner replied, "Not now, but possibly later on." Telephone numbers were exchanged and a year later the owner called and asked Ken if he was still interested in the Porsche. "Of course," he said. The SC was driven a year and a decision was made to make it a nice street concours car. With a black acrylic lacquer paint job, a few new pieces of chrome and new rubber trim, the SC was ready for the ~977 Zone 8 Concours’Series. The Series provided the best learning experience one could obtain in concoursing. After a quick seasoning in the Zone 8 Series, Ken wanted to taste concoursing at a national event in ~978. Realizing Parade concours brings out some of the finest prepared Porsches in the country, Ken totally~ dismantled and re-restored the SC. The competitiveness at a Parade is quite intense, howeveB friendly. The ~978 Parade in Aspen itself was unforgettable, especially winning class and division on the very first attempt.
