Wlnnlng In A Bathtub--A Concours Success Story This month’s cover article is about our ~980 Parade Manhattan Concours winner, Ken Ito, and his ~965 356SC coupe. Ken joined PCA-LA in ~976 to learn about Porsches. Never did he expect to be an "expert" on concoursing. He feels his knowledge was the culmination of his inquisitiveness, shared experiences by other concours enthusiasts and maintaining high personal standards, The first attempt at a Zone 8 concours event in ~977 set Ken toward numerous trophies since. His major awards have been: ~977 Zone 8 Street Class, ~977 356 Registry Overall Street, ~978 Parade Class & Division, ~979 356 Registry Overall Concours and, of course, the ~980 Parade Manhattan Trophy. Ken first saw his ~965 356SC coupe in ~974 when the owner pulled up alongside at a stop sign with a lawnmower in the front seat. He asked the owner if he was interested in selling the 356SC
and the owner replied, "Not now, but possibly later on." Telephone numbers were exchanged and a year later the owner called and asked Ken if he was still interested in the Porsche. "Of course," he said. The SC was driven a year and a decision was made to make it a nice street concours car. With a black acrylic lacquer paint job, a few new pieces of chrome and new rubber trim, the SC was ready for the ~977 Zone 8 Concours’Series. The Series provided the best learning experience one could obtain in concoursing. After a quick seasoning in the Zone 8 Series, Ken wanted to taste concoursing at a national event in ~978. Realizing Parade concours brings out some of the finest prepared Porsches in the country, Ken totally~ dismantled and re-restored the SC. The competitiveness at a Parade is quite intense, howeveB friendly. The ~978 Parade in Aspen itself was unforgettable, especially winning class and division on the very first attempt. PCA-LA At A Glance PCA-LA is 550 dlverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating [and sometimes frustrating] experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.
Subscriptions PORSCHERAMA is available to nonmembers of PCA-LA at the rate of $12 per year. Send requests to 1911 Newell Road, Malibu 90265, along with your check, payable to PCA-LA.

3 What is a Porsche Parade? Will all those people going to Ashville drive down Main Street to show off their cars? Is it a type of American Graffitti German style? If you haven’t had the pleasure of attending a "Parade" you might well wonder. I understand that the original Porsche Parade was just that--people driving through town proudly displaying their machines for all to see. The modern day Parade has evolved into a week long gathering of Porsche people meeting in competitive and social events. You are still able to display your car at the Concours, test your skills against the Rallymaster, or see if you can beat the clock in the Autocross. In addition there are technical quizzes, lectures, and a variety of social events scheduled to hold your interest. A week of partying? Yes, it is. It’s also a place to meet people from all parts of the country, see old friends and just plain enjoy yourself. Some of us in Los Angeles are beginning to realize what goes into the making of a Parade as we set forth in expectation of receiving the bid for ~984. It is an effort of extreme planning and care. We are trying to arrange vacation fun for approximately 500-700 people. Not an easy task you say. Absolutely right. Even though t984 might appear to be a long way off much advance planning is required. The response to our initial request for assistance has been gratifying yet there is still a need for volunteers. If you are interested in helping either in a Chairman’s position or just helping out, give Bob Housman a call. He is the official ’1984 Parade Chairman should Los Angeles receive the bid and would be happy to hear from you. In the meantime, keep on "flashing".
Notice anything different about our paper this month? It’s the typesetting. Isn’t it terrific? Your editors are really excited about it because we think it makes PORSCHERAMA look just that much better. We have one of our two new advertisers to thank for this--ROGERSOUND LABS in Canoga Park. They’re giving us a lot of help with the newsletter, and we hope our members will return the favor by supporting them. Our other new advertiser is P.B. TWEEKS WEST. Welcome to them. We’re getting a lot of help from all of you these days, and we want you to know how much we appreciate it. Last month we forgot to thank "George" Housman for typing the membership column. Lee Burton has offered to write about the Zone 8 Time Trial series [anybody out there interested in doing it for the Rally series?]. Photos in this issue were sent in by Ham Jenkins [rally], Judy Schwartz [Willow T.T.] and Ken Ito. Thanks to Pete for his great article on his 9~4-6 last month and to Ken Ito for this month’s feature. W,e want more articles and pictures for our feature page; you can write about your car, or an event you enjoyed, or whatever. Our deadline for the June newsletter will be April 29. We always want articles, but we’re also looking for event picutres. So if you happened to take some photos at a recent PCA event, just give them to Connie at Porschop so we can include them in the paper. The San Diego results are published in this newsletter. Thanks to Doug Marsh for getting them to us so quickly. Guess that’s about it "editorially" speaking..We’ve got no complaints on our side and we’re getting nothing but good vibes from you, so we must be doing something right. -ConnieLark’nAnn

The Real Grand Prix was not in Long Beach, But in Northridge Forty hearty souls showed up at the Malibu Grand Prix course Sunday, March 29 to prove who was the fastest in L.A. The winners were Rick Jackson and Lori Mortimer. After the official laps were counted and the fastest cars were known, Tracy Nakazaki was the fastest time of day along with Cori Lee in women’s division. The turtle award went to Betty Morgan and Peter. A special award was given to Lee Burton for helping our club make the lap quota with an incredible 37 laps. Adding to the suspense, Malibu Grand Prix awarded a prize to the run-off of the two fastest official times. Rick Jackson and Tom Marx wanted to run wheel to wheel but were overruled. PCA’s Rick Jackson beat POC stalwart, Tom Marx. After the contest many of the racers retired to Northridge Park for a Champagne Brunch and Bench Racing. rm glad I’m not Elmer Dills and was giving prizes for what people brought for brunch. Yoka’s was fabulous and, Bob, your "Bride" made a beautiful sandwich on the sidewalk. "George" you’re super. -Sara Pennington

Request: Where to purchase "Shine-Up" by Johnson Wax - try Peerless Janitorial Supply, 1359 South Hope Street, Los Angeles or any Janitorial supply house. Complaint: It streaked! Reason - too much Shine-up on the damp turkish towel. Needs only very light spray application on damp towel, The Sixth Annual PORSCHE TREFFEN IN STUTTGART personally escorted by Peter Sontag is scheduled for October I to October 1 I. More info next month or call Nancy Newell 8001328-6200 [Eden Prairie, MI]. INVENTORY TIME: Anyone with any club equipment, supplies, etc., please contact Judd Boykin. Bill Van, 35, who started as a lot boy washing cars and worked his way up through the showroom as a salesman to own his own string of five automobile dealerships, has been elected president of the Southern California Porsche-Audi Dealers Association.
Van, operator of Bill Van Porsche-Audi of Garden Grove and Prestige Porsche-Audi of Glendale, succeeds Max Deyerl of Max Dial Porsche-Audi of Inglewood, California, as association president. Election to head the 21-dealer group in North America’s most active imported car market is a milestone for the veteran of two decades in the retail automobile business. It started for Van at age 15 in Toronto, when he went to work for the H. J. Pfaff dealership washing and waxing cars. He moved to California and became a used car salesman for Don Burns Volkswagen, eventually buying into the company and taking control three years ago. Van is also a principal owner of Anaheim Mazda, Garden Grove Datsun and Garden Grove Subaru. Two other dealers elected to the board are Stan Ogner of Ogner Porsche-Audi, Woodland Hills, and Steve Taub, Steve Taub Porsche-Audi, Santa Monica. Ogner will serve as vice-president and Taub as a director. Pete Smith of Bob Smith Porsche-Audi, Hollywood, who is board secretary, and Carl Colley of Colley Porsche-Audi, Riverside, remain as directors. The two resigning board members are Deyerl and Jack Andrews, Circle Porsche-Audi, Long Beach.

12 As this column is being written we’re basking in the glow of another successful PCA/LA month. We’ve had wonderful turnouts at the Grand Prix and Tech meetings while the Malibu Grand Prix event was a delight for all. I want to particularly thank Rick Jackson for his invaluable tips on driving those tiny replica racers, May will be a typically full and varied month for us. Beginning with the First Weekend of the month, Concours fans will get their chance at Southern Arizona Region’s event. It’s a long drive for us, but SAR is promising a full weekend of entertainment. Wednesday, May 13 will feature our customary New Membership meeting. This affair has been well received by all. I’m inclined to think that new members should be invited to more than just one such meeting--please feel free to attend this meeting if there’s any particular facet of PCA/LA you’d like to know more about, May 16 and 17 will see the Zone 8 Time Trials at Las Vegas. This is always a popular event because of the "side show" that Tinseltown can provide for those loyal supporters of the Zone 8 series. It’s a long drive up to ’Vegas but then that makes a caravan a natural idea. Contact our speedy President Judd Boykin or our even speedier [?] Connie Fern [213-398-2217 days] for caravan information. Sunday, May 24 will be our Rally enthusiasts’ turn. Bill LeFlang has prepared an exceptional opportunity for us novices in this somewhat arcane speciality. He’ll be teaching and demonstrating basic Rally terminology and technique [and tantrums?] while priming us for LA Regions Zone 8 Rally that is planned for July. This is one you’ll definitely want to catch--more information elsewhere in this Porscherama. The membership meeting, May 21, will feature Dustin Janes’ familiar annual BBQ steak dinner meeting. We’ll have a [ya-hoo] regular band and social shenanigans. See elsewhere in the newsletter for further particulars,

When I thought about writing this article, I wasn’t aware that I was going to open a real can of worms. The subject--how to "properly" insure your Porsche. Thinking that this might be fairly simple, I called my auto insurance agent, who in return wrote me a letter. Then we discussed what he ha~l written and neither of us could understand it. He suggested I call the chief underwriter of his company and discuss the matter with him. After much back and forth, and other people involved, here’s what I found out. First, most auto insurance companies do not want to write coverage for Porsches. Secondly, if you happen to have an older Porsche, say ten years or more, you’re in real trouble. The insurance companies used to write what they called "Stated Amount" [a few still may], which means that you could insure your car for an exact amount, and if you had accidental damage, the company would pay "up to" the amount you had insured for. Now that seems to have changed. They are now insuring for "Actual Cash Value" and determining the actual cash value of our Porsche cars can be very tricky. The companies use as a guide "The Gold Book", published in El Paso, Texas. The book says that they base their values of older cars on auction prices, dealer quotes [wholesale or retail?] and what private parties are selling for [with or without rust]. Can this apply to our Southern California Porsche climate? I don’t believe so. would seem then, if you suffer a total loss of your Porsche from fire, theft or collision, you’re going to have a fight on your hands with the insurance company. What to do. I would think that the burden of proof is on us to keep accurate records of what cars of like, kind and quality [key words] are selling for. We should have an appraisal made by a qualified person, take photo’s and keep receipts of all work done and parts or accessories added. Further, each year when you renew your coverage, discuss it with your agent and tell him or her what you think your car is worth. Make a real issue of documenting its worth, again with extensive picture taking, and stating that it is a truly special car. You may have to pay some extra bucks, but you are on record as to the value you place on your car. To define "Actual Cash Value" is difficult and open to interpretation and who is doing the interpreting. However, I went to the Law which says that it means "fair market value" and that is what a willing buyer is willing to pay a willing seller absent any duress. Confusing isn’t it? FEATURE ARTICLE [continued] The announcement of the ,1980 Parade in Portland once again prompted Ken to dismantle and restore the SC a third time. The question often asked of him is "Why?". He simply replies, "It wasn’t perfect." To make a ,100 point car from a 97 point car requires an extraordinary amount of time, skill and money but perfection does not come cheap or easy. The coupe was completely stripped. The body was flawlessly metal finished and painted in black nitrocellulose lacquer for a true deep black. The interior is remarkable, it is original except for the replacement German wool carpets. No detail was overlooked as this is what makes a Parade winner. What happened at Portland is well known history, Ken has volunteered as Concours Chairman this year and along with fellow concours enthusiast, Jerry Pennington [,1979 - Parade class winner], staged the successful Los Angeles Concours at Temescal Canyon Park. His future goals are to learn and compete in rallies and time trails.
Another area of confusion is "Uninsured Motorist Coverage". One might think that this would mean if your car was struck by an uninsured motorist, your company would pay for the damage. Not true. What it means is that if you suffer bodily injury and the other person is not insured, you’ll collect from your company for any medical expenses, not damage to your car. Under these circumstances, you would have to look to your collision coverage for repair of your car and then we’re back to "actual cash value". When it comes to repairing our cars, I’m sure we’ve all run into problems. As an example, your door is hit, the insurance company authorizes $380 for repair. However, you don’t want ,15 pounds of BONDO and 49 holes drilled in your car and Earl the Pearl to do the work. Your body shop says, in order to repair the damage properly, to repaint with two-stage paint so that everything matches is going to cost $,1200. What to do? From everything my research tells me, your choice is to pay the difference, file a complaint with the insurance commissioner, or, you may, as the attorneys say, have to sue the bastards. Not nice when you have the feeling of not getting what you are paying for. For those of us who have Porsches that are over twenty-five years old, there is help. There is a company, the J.C. Taylor Company in Pennsylvania, that will insure you completely if You have a clean driving record and your car is a hobby and recreation only vehicle and you tell them you drive it less than 2,000 miles a year. You can call them direct for a quote at [8001345-8290. I’m told that their rates are extremely reasonable and they work with you direct, not through an agent. In writing this article, I had the help of Stephen Bluth of State Farm who still insures Porsches and Dustin Janes, an insurance broker and our wonderful club treasurer. Both these fine men ply their trade on San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood and would be most helpful to you, as they were to me, if you called. Further, if any of you have any suggestions or solutions as to how to best handle this insurance problem, please write me and we’ll see that your information is published in PORSCHERAMA. UP COMING TECH MEETINGS: No meeting for May, but watch out for June. It’s a winner and full of surprises. We’ll be going to Briggs Cunningham’s world famous auto museum on June 2,1 so mark your calendars as this is sure to be fun and informative. More about this event in the May PORSCHERAMA.
