WEST WEEKEND

My only other experience with car rally tours was a heart-stopping, bottom-ofthe-seat-gripping weekend in Yosemite with fifty Golden Gate Region Porscheners. Soooooo the calm ride down Highway l was truly a piece of cake. Other than the usual get behind and catch up we lost only one car occupied by Brent and Georgette, but fo.und them waiting for us at the Ranch. We arrived in high spirits and a great big glad to be here feeling. The Ranch is really hard to just stumble upon. You have to know ahead of time to turn East off Highway lOl on Refugio Beach Road and continue into the mountains fording a few streams along the way.

~ :i~:~::

~:

After meeing Mrs. Brown in the office she listed the room numbers and what the distribution of beds were like in each one. We all wandered off in search of our own Plaza Suites. Noticeably absent was a room key. Just didn’t seem to miss it anyway since we were the only ones up here. I felt like I was back in the small town I grew up in where my mom used to leave the back door unlocked. Only we never had a swimming pool with gorgeous male peacocks strutting around like the nine the Ranch has in residence. (conIt on page 6)

We all changed into various degrees of swim wear and flopped down around the pool to enjoy the scenery and warm ourselves in the sun. We watched the two energetic kids in the group, my son, Ben, and Billy Watkins, either or both swim, play darts, horseshoes, and chase the peacocks,

Connie brought her work with her this weekend so as the sun started to filter less and less through the trees surrounding the pool we got busy helping her stuff the Porsche newsletter. Everyone that is, except me, glued as I was to my pencil and yellow pad trying as hard as I could to write something captivating, stimulating and exciting about a wonderful, relaxed day in a beautiful ideallic setting in some pretty darn good company. The rooms are definitely rustic, some more than others. Duane tells me that he doesn’t mind camping out but his room is definitely one of those a little more rustic than the others. After having the Ranch to ourselves all day it was a surprise to see the local city folk arriving in great numbers for the Barbeque and show. It was Porsche 14, City Folk 86. Connie made a new taste discovery in Beth’s invention of Scotch Coffee. After dinner we followed a charming, well lit, brick path that led to an authentic red barn where we saw a production of Dew Drop Inn, a rousing musical comedy. At intermission everyone was in a hot debate over whether it was truly a high camp production or was it possible anyone could act that. bad on purpose. When we all went back after our 15 minute break the first song they did was "I Found Jesus and He Made Me Gay." Wellll .... thank God it wasn’t the acting! After a fabulous Sunday morning breakfast, buffet style, some of the group went horseback ridina and some of us flopped around the pool again.

As the day wore on the comraderie between the fourteen of us increased. We all shared a common feeling: hunger and thirst. Bob brought Scotch and peanuts. Brent brought the cups and coke, that’s like in cola, Duane brought the cheese and Pizza Thins. You wouldn’t think dinner at seven could seem like such a lonngg time away.

As the morning wore on, one by one, we started to leave. I took a right turn out of the Ranch and encountered ten miles of tire-eating roads and a sign that said "SLOW," with about one thousand bullet holes in it. These mountain folk don’t fool around! (con’t on page 11)

MEMORY ....

FRED WILLIAM KUCHENMEISTER 22 SEPTEMBER 1944 - 9 MAY 1982

I didn’t really get to know Fred until about a year and a half ago and I only saw him at the Time Trials held during that period. Can you call an acquaintance like this a friend? Yes, positively. I thought of Fred as a very good friend. Fred and I were competitors in the same class, but he was always willing to impart any of his knowledge or come to a person’s assistance

even if they were class adversaries. Fred Kuckenmeister died on Saturday, May , 1982. When I heard of this I felt a great loss, not just for myself, but also for the Zone Time Trial series, the San Diego Region and PCA in general. Fred was a great competitor, but a better person. If you hadn’t met Fred I feel sorry for you° FRED - we’ll miss you.

We stopped for lunch at the Cold Springs Tavern, located off Stagecoach Road on the west side of Highway 154 between Solvang and Santa Barbara. They have the best steak sandwiches and an energetic C&W band was setting up outside when we arrived. Cold Springs Tavern is an authentic old stage coach stop modified but still serving to entertain, a favorite watering hole for everyone. While I was there, about one hundred Harley’s roared in with guys wearing black leather jackets that said things like "The Monks" and "The Tigers." They sat shoulder to shoulder with families with kids and Junior Leaguers. But very quickly they did disappear at an alarming rate up the hiking trails in the mountains behind the Tavern. Must have been very interesting for some single girl up there with her steak sandwich and a good book. That was the last stop before we got home.

hand on his hip as he critically surveyed

"Wow! That’s a really terrific car, Mom." My 7 year old son, Ben, said in absolute awe as I pulled into our garage late Sunday afternoon. "I’m going to get one someday." In a wild, impetus mood I said, "Maybe you can have this one when you start driving." "When?"

my treasure. "You know the first thing I’m going to do?" He said wagging his finger at me. Oh My God, Oh My God, right away I wished I could take it all back. "~ghat?" "First~ I’m gonna paint a big eagle on the front." Ben said proudly. "Aaggg, Aaggg." I went into cardiac arrest right on the spot. So at the next rally, if you see this little kid driving a steel gray 911 with a beeg eagle on the front .... well, you know the ~tory.

Thanks to Connie and Bob Fern, Nicki and Duane Alan, Bill and Peggy Watkins and son, Billy, Georgette and Brent Morrow, Phyllis Hay, Rick and Beth Jackson, and moi, Judy Garwood Wolff and son, Ben, for a great WILD WEST WEEKEND. Judy Garwood Wolff

ONE WOMAN’S POINT TIME TRIALING

OF

VIEW

--

When my husband, Bill, first started talking about buying a Porsche, I thought., "Well, another whim--he knows we don’t need another car." Little did I know, when the Porsche bug hits, it doesn’t go away!

was let out on the track by myself for the timed run--had the slowest time of the day--and had the most exhilerated feeling I had ever had. I ACTUALLY DID IT!!!! Then came all the little expensive things. We have put more money into our little toy than we have our three kids in the

At about this time, we met Rick Jackson through our tennis club. Bill happened to mention the word, Porsche, and that’s all it took. A few days later, Bill, Rick and our son Billy, took off to go "look" at Porsches. Guess what?? Home came this little thing that I thought looked like a squished version of a car. I couldn’t even pronounce the word right, !et alone fall immediately in love with the car the way Bill had.

past six months. Of course, the car had to have a whale tail (to make it go faster), the rear fenders just had to be flared (so the tireswouldn’t rub), we just had to have racing suits, helmets, new seat belts, and on and on. We were now true racers.

The next month, Rick invited us to attend a Time Trial at Riverside just to watch, I wasn’t real thrilled about spending the v~eekend watching cars go round and round, but Bill was so excited about it I conceded. Rick took both of us for a ride that weekend (which terrified me!), but one look at Bill when he got out of that car and I knew what he had in ~ind.

Club. We were having the time of our lifeo The thrill of victory!! I felt with each Time Trial, I was getting a little better and going a little faster. But then came the agony of defeat. Well, I guess it wasn’t defeat, but heartache. I crunched our beautiful little Porsche. It wasn’t entirely my fault. It was a combination of the Las Vegas track eating tires and me hitting the brakes a mite

The next month found us at Riverside, with Bill signed up to drive and the car all pre-teched. On Friday night, Rick asked me why I didn’t drive too. He told me some day it might save my life, learning the right way to drive a car. I thought that made sense and I have never been one to be a spectator. So, rationally, I convinced myself I would "try" it. You must understand that I had never been behind the wheel of the car, let alone drive it around this famous race track where all the "big boys" drove. Bill was kind enough to let me drive the car to the restaurant that night, which was only 3 or 4 blocks away and gave me great practice!!

too hard. I found the tire barrier and managed to end up upside down. Because of all of the safety equipment, I ended up without a bruise or scratch. It was a statement for all Porsche owners-just how well constructed the car really is. Thanks to Bob Fern (Porschop) and Carl Young (Porschaus in Las Vegas donating a new windshield), they had the car running for the Sunday timed run. There was body damage, but the engine was purring. In fact, Bill drove the car and took first in his class. I drove too, but very carefully. I’m glad I did, because by the time I went around the fateful spot the third time, I had gained a little confidence again.

I didn’t sleep one wink Friday night, but Saturday morning, I was ready. Rick was my instructor and I’m sure I scared the daylights out of him, but with lots of patience, he finally got through to me what "apex" and "line" meant. Well, I

Whether I will drive again or not, I still have not determined in my mind. But, I’ll tell you one thing. Whether I’m driving or not, those weekends will still be a highlight in our life, and I wouldn’t miss it. What a great group of people!!

My family and friends thought I had completely lost my mind, but it is impossible to describe to anyone the excitement and companionship of the Porsche
