Enjoy.

With four clubs in a poker hand, you
wind up one shy, but in a Zone 8 Time Trial, it means a full house. July 10th and 11th was the Second Annual Peter Gregg
Memorial Challenge Cup at Riverside. We started with about 180 entrants, but noshows brought it down to around 160 drivers. Unfortunately, the majority of
these were in Porsches. It’s not that I don’t like Porsches anymore, it’s just that we didn’t get as many Ferrari and
Pantera entrants as we had anticipated, Still, it turned out to be a great week-
end for all concerned. Two Panteras wound up with the fastest time for the event (we thought the short course would take care of their horsepower) while L.Ao’s Jon Winthrop had the fastest PCA time and Steve Michaelson for POC the fastest Porsche time.
Many thanks are due my co-eventmaster, Ooug Wasson (POC)and our assistants, Char]ie Ak]y and Don Beards]ee. The
event wouldn’t have run so smoothly without their efforts, Special mention must also be made of our
sponsors for without them we could not survive-- Vasek Po]ak for the dash p]aques: Mr. X of Miller Brewing for the kowenbrau (everybody thoroughly

Sun Roofs - All Models - If you experience slippage problems with the drive cables, before you condemn the cables or drive gear, make certain the tensioning plate (part #241 877 373) is properly shaped. The "U" shape of the tensioning plate determines the depth that the drive gear on the crank engages in the cables. In some cases, reshaping the tensioning plate with pliers is all that is required.
Fan Belt Replacement 928 - The part number for the fan belt is 99919211750. When replacing the belt please be sure that there is a 7D after the part number on the belt. Some belts have a 7J after the part number. The 7J will not fit correctly.

MODULAR ME ERSHIPMEMORIES WATCH OUT. The great automatic in the sky is about to sweep down upon the PCA/ LA membership files. After years of having computer facilities "donated" to the club by various employers of PCA/LA members, we are about to take over the task ourselves. The "Board" has authorized me, your humble membership chairman, to acquire the necessary computer programs and supplies to enablethe PCAi LA membership files to be handled on a "personal" computer° Now, we don’t definitely have a personal computer available, so if any of you folks out there in readership land have a "personal" computer, please contact me. We would like to have some alternatives in case of equipment problems or other unforeseen circumstances should occur. With the personal computer capability, we will be able to process the monthly paperwork sooner and more quickly respond to inquiries about membership. We will keep you posted on what progress is being made on this front.
Thosewhocouldn’tmakeitforthisone should t~ to make the November meeting. These meetings are always fun and casual allowing old and new members to get acquainted and talk about their favorite toys. Speaking of new members, let’s welcome: Rollyn Brown Steven Chmielewski Louis Cicalesc Jim Freeberg Britta Haberman Randy Nonberg Tony Borcelli John Porter, M.D. Bob Stassi Boyd Walker

THAT’S INCREDIBLE By Pete Zimmerman July lOth started out normally enough. We awoke at 4:00 a.m., secured our home and headed for Riverside Int’lo Raceway. After unloading our racer and having it teched, we gave it our final series of checks: torque the lug nuts, check the oil, check the air pressure, etc. After five laps in the first practice session, I noticed a film of oil beginning to cover the outside of the rear window. The car was running extremely well, oil pressure and temperature were normal, but not wanting to risk oiling the racing surface, i brought the little red car back to the garages. What a mess~ Something had gotton out of kilter causing an incredible amount of crankcase pressure, which in turn filled up the overflow (catch) tank located in the rear luggage compartment area. It also filled up most of the rear trunk~ My crew, God bless theme, had the thing cleaned up inside of an hour, but we had not quite grasped what had gone wrong. We decided to reroute the breather hose and check it during the next session. As it turned out, we were pumping almost one quart into the catch tank every two laps~ Pat and Walt went into town (while Mike cleaned up the mess) and returned with about six feet of heater hose, which we added to the existing breather, hoping this would provide us with enough area to last the tenlap race on Saturday afternoon. The race was fantastic~ I started 12th in a field of 20 cars. We had one pace lap, and the green flag came out as we came down the pit straight. After working my way up to 3rd, I noticed my oil pressure guage flickering, and after completing a 4th to 5th gear shift, going all the way to zero. Time to shut it off~ After coasting through turn nine and into the pits, I had a short discussion with the crew and we decided to call it quits for the weekend. continued page 7
Now the incredible part starts~ We were loading up the car Sunday morning (after having one hell of a good time Saturday night) when I was approached by Jeannie Kuchenmeister from the San Diego Region. Jeannie owns this great C/P 914/6 and co-drives it with a fellow named Bob Muzzyo Apparently, Jeannie and Bob were discussing my dilemma Saturday evening: and decided to offer me their car to drive for the purpose of earning points toward the year-end championship~ On top of this, Jeannie actually gave up one of her practice sessions in order to let me get the feel of driving her car. (I had never even sat in it before~)
~
! ......~ .....
It was quite an experience; my car is closed, hers is open (no windshield or roof) and the helmet I wear just about tore my head off at the end of the straight and the entrance to turn two because of all the air getting under the visor and the chin protector. The incredible events continue ...... Judd Boykin has this terrific helmet he wears to drive his "chop-top" Targa. This helmet is designed for an open car, has a fresh air device over the nose and mouth and a permanent "sock" that is attached at its base which covers the neck and tucks into the driving suit collar. All this adds up to a very comfortable high speed helmet that eliminates tugging and vibration. Judd offered me the use of his very trick, very expensive, helmet. A short time later, l’m sitting on the starting grid for timed runs in a car I’ve only run five slow laps in, wearing a helmet l’ve never had on before, questioning my sanity. As it turned out, I did a lap of 1.39:29 (compared to my best time in my own car, a 1.37:05), which was good enough for a second place and 16 points~ All this, thanks to Judd for the use of his helmet, and a very special thank you to Jeannie Kuchenmeister and Bob Muzzy for the use of one dynamite 914/6~ Porsche people are just plain incredible!

September promises the whole spectrum of PCA-type activities and a very full calendar. ~Jednesday the 8th will recall a very popular and successful event. Tech Chairman, Doug Anderson, and Redline Service will be doing a Tech Session on "How to Buy a Used Porsche." This is a universal topic, useful to all Porsche pushers whether or not they’re planning on buying another Porsche soon. Honestly, aren’t we all planning to buy another one eventually? Redline, the service emporium of Pete Zimmermann, is located at 720 Colorado Avenue, Santa Monica. Phone is (213) 450-7414. See you there ’.

CHADWICK SCHOOL PROUDLY PRESENTS SWEEPSTAKES ’ 82 "WIN A PORSCHE"
ARE YOU GETTING ALL YOUR PARTI C IPATION POINTS?
Win this 1983 Porsche 911 Sports Coupe with a sun roof in the color of your choice~ Round trip tickets for two to Germany are included in this prize package. Tickets go on sale Septembet 15. Call Mary Curtin, Chadwick School, (213) 375-7034 for ticket information. Tickets are limited to 600.
Chances are the answer to that question for everyone is NO!! The reason is simple - it’s almost impossible for one person to be at every event and know everyone and everything that goes on. The solution is simple toolet the responsiblity for getting credit rest with each member. To accomplish this two methods are being implemented. 1) a Sign-In sheet at each activity/event (if you sign-in you get a point for participating). 2) a Worker Form will be available at Registration at all events to be filled out by the member and returned to Registration (if you work - you fill out the form).
Arrangements for the delivery of the 1983 Porsche 911SC have been made through Gentry Autos International. Included in the winning ticket are the round trip tickets for car pickup in Germany and all taxes, duties, and license fees. The drawing will be held in the evening on November 21, 1982 at the Ice Capades Chalet, The Courtyard, 550 Deep Valley Drive, Palos Verdes Peninsula. Tickets for each chance are $100o00 with the proceeds to benefit the educational process of Chadwick School, a non-profit organization, 26800 South Academy Drive, Palos Verdes Peninsula.
If you’re interested in being eligible for Year End Participation awards make sure you Sign-In and fill out the Worker Form. If you don’t see them ask for them. Good Luck and let’s see everyone’s name listed under Participation Points next time.
The lucky ticket holder need not be present to win.

Chances are, because we’re right here in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley, you tend to think of us as a "little neighborhood shop" specializing in machine work and special parts for Porschesand VW’s. Well, that’s right - we give that sort of "hometown" service you like to get as "one of the gang." But CE’s fast and friendly way of doing business sort of spread out from here to other folks who also enjoyed

the way they were treated as one of our local gang. Maybe we should be open about this -- our "local gang" hails from Honolulu, Houston, Muncie, PomLitz" pano Beach, Prescott, Richmond, Seattle, St. Paul - even Toronto,
~ll~l~’~’|’l~’|D~i~ Frankfurt; Melbourne, Oslo and South Africa (to name a few). But, ~|~~J~l~ honestly, we’ll treat you just as well even if your hometown is down in L.A., or maybe even Pasadena !
