PCA-LA is 550 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.

There is a full schedule with more of the same. Check out the advance calendar in this issue and make your plans accordingly. I hope you were at the Lobster House for the Christmas party. If not, you sure missed a good affair and some good door prizes. Welcome aboard to our two new Board members, Bill and Peggy Watkins (Activities and Secretary). Who says this isn’t a family club? Early events to watch for include the Zone 8 Awards Banquet at Apple Valley on January 15th, followed by Riverside Region’s Wine Tour on the 16th (same location). February 5th and 6th brings the first Zone 8 Time Trial at Riverside Raceway--sure hope it doesn’t rain this year. February 19th is a Rally School conducted by Tom Gould, Jr. The following Saturday (2/26) you get to practice what you’ve learned at the first Zone Rally hosted by the Orange Coast Region. Make 1983 your year to participate. Come on out and win the new Zone 8 Overall Award. See you in ’83 ....

CHRISTMAS AWARDS BANQUET BY DAVID GIVENS T’was two weeks before Christmas and all through the house (Lobster that is) a lot of creatures were stirring, but nary a mouse. Photo entries were displayed by the windows with care, in hope that Bob and Chris Florin and St. Judd soon would be there. The members were nestled all snug in their places, while visions of Porsches danced in their faces. Such was the setting for the Annual Christmas party on a beautiful day in Marina del Rey, music playing, an inviting buffet and a view of how the other half lives. People gathered to enjoy the holiday season, using Porsche as a common ground. After a stimulating cocktail hour and brunch, Judd entertained us with his rye sense of humor and led us into what we had all looked forward to: photo contest winners, yearly Club awards and DOOR PRIZES. Unfortunately, one cannot describe photographs (you had to be there), but they ranged from scenic beauty to terrific imagination to comedy. The Best in Show went to Duane Alan. The first place winners by category were: Speed Lark Nakazaki; Concours - Duane Alan; Rally/Tour - Duane Alan; People - Barton Young. A special note that Lark Nakazaki also won third place in Speed. A particular thank you to Bob and Chris Florin for their professional judging and start taking your shots now for 1983. A lot more entires would be desirable (hint, hint).

At last, we arrived at the Door Prizes, and while all of us common-folk awaited anxiously, Ken Becker won the "Biggie," two Long Beach Grand Prix tickets. (If you see Judd and him together at the event, call the Bunco Squad). But, there were still a lot of great prizes remaining and as many happy winners. Extra, extra thanks to those gracious donors of all the goodies. (Speaking selfishly though, as one of the very few whose ticket wasn’t chosen, I was very disappointed with the absence of t~e Porsche mugs.) And that’s the way it was, December 12, 1982. If you weren’t there, you should have been, but there’s always this year. Last but not least, let’s applaud the Board of Directors and volunteers of our Club for planning and arranging a great Christmas party, as well as all of the year’s events. They deserve all of our thanks and help to make 1983 even more successful. continued page 18
Next we moved to our Club awards, which may seem insignificant to many, but without the participation and involvement of those members, our events and activities would be greatly diminished.

RESULTS OF ZONE 8 PRESIDENT’S MEETING - 10/30/82 A Zone 8 President’s Meeting was held on October 30, 1982 at the home of Holly Payne in Los Alamitos, CA. The Zone 8 Staff for 1983 was voted on and approved by the Presidents. The Staff will be:
It was decided by the Presidents that any future Zone expense outside of those covered by the series allocations will be approved by the Presidents in advance. Advance approval can be made by telephone. It was decided to have an overall competition program for the 1983 season. To
Ron Hughes/Orange Coast Region/Chief of Staff and Director of Competition Chuck & Stana Cooper/Grand Prix Region/ Concou~ Series Chairmen Tom Gould, Jr./Orange Coast Region/ Rallye Series Chairman Judd Boykin/L.A. Region/Time Trial & Slalom Series Chairman
be eligible for consideration, an entrant must enter at least one of each type of event offered in the Zone 8 Competition Series. We are working on a scoring system now and we will have more informarion for you at the Presidents Meeting in Apple Valley on Jan. 15, 1983. Ron Hughes will handle the scoring.
The Presidents discussed, voted and approved the competition rules for the 1983 season. The major changes in each series are as follows:
Each Region is encouraged to submit names of candidates for the 1982 Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year Award. The cutoff date is Jan. 8, 1983. Please submit your names to me as soon as possible.
CONCOUR SERIES: Classes ~-1 and S-1 (356’s) was split into two classes. Class C-1 and S-I for 1983 will be closed 356’s. Class C-2 and S-2 will be open 356’s. RALL~E SERIES: No rule changes, however, a new class was added for those that are not interested in year end awards (Class D). This will be similar to the Wash and Shine Division in the Concour Series.
Paul Haas of the San Diego Region has been selected by Judd Boykin to be the Chief Driving Instructor for 1983. Paul will tell the Presidents about his program for 1983 during the Presidents Meeting in Apple Valley.
TIME TRIAL SERIES" As usual, there were many changes made in the Time Trial rules and you should check with Judd Boykin to get all of them. Some of the mere important changes were:
The subject of a mid-year Zone 8 social event was discussed at the Presidents Meeting. The subject will be brought up again at Apple Valley and hopefully one of our Regions will pick up the ball and host the event. The Las Vegas Region is considering (again, only considering) hosting a Zone Social Event at either Bull Head City, Arizona
I) There will no longer be classes for ladies,
or Laughlin, Nevada. This event could possibly be held in conjunction with a
2) Competition seat belts including submarine belts will be required at all Zone 8 events on all cars. 3) Instructors will have to attend an instructor school annually to be certified as an instructor,
Zone 8 Rallye starting on a Saturday morning in Las Vegas, Nevada and ending at either Bull Head City or Laughlin. Participation could be insured by making attendance mandatory for consideration for overall. Again, these are just thoughts that we will discuss in Apple Valley. continued page 15
(ed. note: Late news from Apple Valley meeting - there will be Ladies Classes in 1983.)
11 PERSONAL SAFETY AT TIME TRIALS (Reprinted with permission from POC Newsletter, July 1982.) At a recent general meeting, a dlscussion came up about the requirement for competitiontype seat belts at time trials. There were some general complaints voiced about the cost, installation problems and convenience of using these types of belts. While none of us enjoy wasting money, especially in today’s economic environment, the cost/benefit of competition belts is clearly in the belts favor. For approximately $65 per seat, $75 including anti-submarine strap, not only is safety greatly enhanced, but so is driver performance. High speed driving requires precise driver control and this is greatly enhanced by the driver being securely strapped in position. Ordinary street belts cannot provide this type of support. The result is safer~ and faster, driving. For less than the cost of one time trial.
As for safety, street belts cannot match properly installed competition belts. The width of the lap belts and the additional shoulder belts provide a much greater area over which loads, driving or emergency, can be distributed. While street seat belts have adequate strength, in a crash their narrow width can cut into your body or cause internal injuries. These benefits can only be fully attained if the belts are properly installed. Problem two mentioned at the meeting. For most cars, especially the newer 924s, 911SCs, etc., the lap belt represents little potential problem as the bolt hole for the existing street belts can usually be used for the eye-bolts for the competition belts. So no holes are required to be drilled. Just remove the street belt mounts and bolt in the competition hardware.

ZONE 8 NOTES continued
Another subject that was discussed at the President Meeting was the possibility of a 1985 Zone 8 Parade Bid. Possible locations that were discussed were Mammoth Mountain, Long Beach, Santa Barbara and Las Vegas. We will discuss this subject thoroughly in Apple Valley and will probably hold a separate meeting after the Presidents Meeting to discuss it in detail.

...BOY, DOES C NOINEERINQJ HAVE A REPUTATION ! ( COMPETITION ~
Chances are because we’re right here in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley, you tend to think of us as a "little neionuornoo(] shop" specializing in machine work and special parts for Porschesand VW’s. Well, that’s right we gvethat sort of "hometown" service you like to get as "one of the gang." But CE’s fast and friend IV way of doing business sort of spread out frorn here to other folks who also enjoyed the way they were treated as one of our local gang. COMPETITION POINTS-
I would like to review how the point system works in PCA/LA. It’s very hard to keep track of the points without a system--I’m sure you can all understand that. That is why I have devised a form which, hopefully, will be at all events, at the Registration Desk, for all workers to fill out. Please look for this form-it will be your responsibility to fill it out and turn it in to the Event Master: pCA/LA PARTICIPATION

JANUARY BOARD MINUTES continued
1982 YEAR END RESULTS WOMEN’S COMPETITION"
OLD BUSINESS Judd reported that John Williamson’s letter had not been received and that he has not heard from John’s attorney. After discussion, John Fels moved that Judd Boykin call John Williamson’s attorney within the next seven days and, if we do not hear from John or his attorney with a proper response to our request of the last meeting, that his membership be terminated. Bill Watkins seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Brent Morrow was asked to notify advertisers that payment should be made for ads for 1982 and that a 50% payment be required in advance for 1983 before the ad will be placed in the Newsletter. NEW BUSINESS Judd reported on a call from Milichev Fine Art, Inc. inviting PCA members to his studio to look at his art. After discussion, it was decided that Judd would call him and give him the opportunity to advertise in the Newsletter. Judd reported on a letter received from Riverside Int’l. Raceway informing the Club of the new regulations for 1983. The main points of discussion were the $4.00 per person entry fee and the July Ist mandatory muffler requirement. Judd will call RIR and ask if we can pay a flat fee through the Club for the entry fee instead of per person. Connie asked Judd if he would write an article for the Newsletter informing the members of the new muffler requirement. Brent Morrow moved to adjourn the meeting and Peggy Watkins seconded. The motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 10:20 p.m.

CHRISTMAS AWARDS continued
A word of caution here ’ though " Make sure that when the competition belt is installed in your normal driving position, the line drawn by the belt should intersect the angle formed by your body. Or, put another way, that line if extended should be equal distant from your thighs and chest,
The new Board of Directors was also announced, including Judd Boykin and John Fels repeating as President and Vice President, Brent Morrow again as Treasurer, Bob Housman as Membership and two new members, husband and wife team, Bill and Peggy Watkins as Activities and Secretary, respectively.
If you need to drill mounting holes
make
sure they are drilled with this positioning in mind. And also make sure the holes are drilled so that the 3" washers can be used behind the floor pan to provide the minimum strength needed for the mounting points.
Of course, let’s not forget beleaguered Connie Fern for continuing all of her work putting this Newsletter together Anyone volunteering to help her would be most welcomed.
As to the shoulder harnesses, the use of a "Y" type harness reduces the mounting to a single point. This harness should be mounted so that the belt line from the shoulders to the mounting point is no greater than 45o from the horizontal and the junction of the "Y" is at least 6" from the driver’s neck. On many cars, such as 911s, the shoulder harness can be mounted in the existing holes for the rear seat lap belts. These holes are usually hidden by plastic plugs. This again avoids the necessity of drilling holes. Finally, for full protection and positioning, an anti-submarine strap is very useful. While not required, this strap holds the lap belt down (so it cannot slide up and you slide down and out) and aids in positioning the driver° Positioning this strap is extremely important, especially for males. It is properly used by running from the quickrelease lap belt latch, down between your legs and then under your thigh and around the seat back to the lap belt eye-bolt. Done this way, no new holes and no strap against your crotch. Comfort, safety and positioning. One last word of caution. All of the above does little good if the belt/harness system is not properly threaded in its mounting hardware and securely mounted. Be sure to read the threading instructions supplied with the belts and use the backing washers. And if holes are drilled, buy a can of spray undercoating from your local auto parts dealership to protect your car’s body.
