PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilarating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. O.K., L.A. Region--Zone 8 is going to host the 1985 Porsche Parade. Ron Hughes will be the Parade Chairman and will be looking for assistance from all the regions for this undertaking. It will take a great effort from many people to make this a successful event, SO let’s get behind the effort and show the rest of PCA that we can give them the best Parade they have ever attended. I am going to start ccrnpiling a list of L.A. volunteers, so if you want to help,
give me a call on the Hotline -- 981-3156. Another project we can think ahead to for 1985 is that of our own 25TH ANNIVERSARY. That’s right, the L.A. Region received its charter back in 1960. This will be the perfect year to celebrate the occasion, so start thinking of it also. Anybody interested in working on an anniversary celebration should call the Hotline. Let’s make 1985 our year.

PORSCHERAMA EXTRA Dear PC~. Friends, We’re certainly enjoying ourselves. The Frankfurt Auto Show (50th IAA) was great --at least what we could see of it. I never saw so many people crowded around cars; you could only see parts of the popular ones. Look at the rear, then wait your turn to see the front. Paris and Birmingham. shows were poor box office compared to this. On to the Porsche stand_. The "stand’~ was covered with white carpet with one each production m~.el in black exterior and white interior. The cabrio was on a raised dias and the boot cover was graying with all the hand_ prints. And all 911’s are now Carrera’s, not SC’s, 924, 944, 911, 928 and Turbo. All engines were displayed in plastic boxes, and one half a 928 body showed base m.eta! in front graduated to 7year guarantee finish coat at the rear. Two all white race cars were displayed. One 956, and a new GrouD B 911 bodied_ exercise with low recessed, headlights and integrated. rear wing--all very_ swoopy, giving a Cw of . 32. It has a rear-mounted, 6-cylinder motor with 4 valve water cooled heads driving all 4 wheels through a 6 speed gear box: 2.85 liter, 400 hD, 0-i00 km/h in 4.9 sec, 0-200 km/h in 15.4 sec.
Dieter is a zone manager for Toyota in Southern Germany. We took Dieter a Porscherama from 1960. It is the one with Bob Holbert at Riverside on the cover, Dieter at our meeting ins:ide, and presentation of the L.A. Chapter on the back cover. Dieter was surprised and very grateful. The 911 Turbo (not labeled 930) is 3.3 i., 300 hp, 0 to I00 km/h in 5.4 sec, top 260 km/h. The Carrera is 3.21., 231 hp, 0-i00 km/h in 6.1 sec, top 245 km/h, or 150+ mmh. Porsches fly in Europe[ Dieter Kutschbach, the Porsche factory representative in Los ~geles when our remion was formed, "spearheaded" our tour of the show. Later we visited with Dieter, Inge and their two sons in their n~>dern home in the country_ south of Stuttgart. Little Michael and Peter are both taller than their parents.

Well like it or not here we are back again. I’m still trying to get used to fatherhood(read that as sleepless nights) and now I have to suffer from withdrawal symptoms since my computer is on the fritz(technical talk for broken) and without the wordprosser I have to think about margins and carriage returns and all of that tough stuff as opposed to thinking of what to write about membership. Oh well on with the show. I want to thank a~l of you new members that have joined the last two months for being so patient. We are having to set up new methods of keeping track of the membership roles now that I no longer have a "free" computer system to use for PCAiLA This coupled with my now having to actually work for a living has made it difficult to get the labels updated for newsletter and other mailings. Another frustrating pro b~ lem is that .for some reason PCA national has not been able to supply us with any membership applications all summer. Strange how do you suppose they expect us to sign up new members or are they trying to tell us that PCA/LA already has enough members ? ? ? I f anyone out there has any ideas and wants to win the Membership Quiz of the month then send your answers (or questions)to Membership Quizmaster c/o your local newsletter. Those of you (most of you) who missed the Harbor Cruise dinner made a BIG mistake! See John Fels’ article elsewhere in this issue. The August Time Trial on the long course at Riverside was great fun. Top Time of Day was taken by Jim Torres in his factory twin turbo-a slick 1:55 with NO boost. 9~at a car! His only problem was keeping the car clean since most of us were drooling all over it.

1983 PARADE IMPRESSIONS by Doug Dana Sunday evening found all of us O.K. SPORTS FANS--I ’ve decided to contribute _my customary literary brillance(?) to Porscherama one more time (once a year whether you can stand it or not). [Note to typesetter: leave romm here for boos, jeers and rotten tomatoes] ¯ For some odd reason (brain damage?), I’ve once again subjected myself and loyal wife Susie to LAX, ticket counter lines, late baggage tags, United Airlines, TWA Airlines, smiling(?) stewardesses, delightful repasts (gag me wi~_h a 747), odd-smelling fellow passengers, humidity, bugs, skunks, $16.00 breakfast, the tules, $1.58 a gallon gas and, worst of all, a Nissan Sentra cmmplete with tinklinq bells, noisy everything, and a tra~l of plastic parts due to its advanced mileage (2400 miles). Yes--true splendor (drumroll, please) --Ozarks ’ 83 ! ! ! ! For new members, or those of you bored already, we’re discussing this year’s Porsche Parade at Osage Beach, MO. As usual, the Parade offered a diverse selection of activities to cater to everyone’s Porsche and non-Porsche special interests, ~

congregated at the Hotel Marina for "Beer and Bratwurst" and Porsche-style conviviality. Actually, we met for one of my favorite post-travel activities. Smelling the resort hotel’s sewage treatment problems. Also, a treat to find that a lake with about 1200 miles of shoreline is about 50% water and 50% undigested, anaerobic bilge-o. Waterskiing over old Budweiser cans is an athletic challenge no self-respecting Porsche sportsman should miss. Went bass fishing and caught several chain tensioners for my ’64C. The good news is that we made new Porsche friends (as you do at all the events, meetings, banquets, etc. at a Parade) from St. Louis and closed several hotel bars.
Awakening Monday a.m. to 100+° temperature and 99.9% humidity (honest, dear, Parades are fun), off we go to the Concours site. A goTf--course fairway provided the background and the greenskeeper types provided the adversary° Want to see a grown man cry? Have his fore~an tell him: "Yes, Homer, J.P. says all 90 cars go on your fairway." C’est la vie. Special interest cars this year were a 908, a Denzel convertible and an E!va-Porsche. Earliest car shown was a ’53 coupe. Zone 8 was well represented in the Manhattan judging (at about 6:00 p.m.) with the Springer’s 924 and Ron Mistak’s 911 winning division titles. The overall award went to a 930 turbo from the Connecticut Valley region. Concoursing a Parade entry always requires a superhuman effort, but the Ozark weather would please a Marine drill sergeant. Met Vern and Ada Covert at the side of their trusty 906, "The Beast." Spending time with these two veteran Parade attendees is a real treat. Finer people can’t be found. The Covert ’ s convey their warm greetings to all of the L.A. region. Ada is recovering from major knee surgery and is moving a few mph slower these days continued on ~je 18

August Board Minutes J~dd Boykin, President, called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. at the West End Garden Restaurant. John Fels moved to dispense with the reading of the July Minutes and to approve as typed. Bill Watkins seconded and the motion carried unanimously, VICE PRESIDEbFP’S REPORT: John Fels reported that 27 people had attended the Dinner Cruise, all had a great evening, and that we could not have asked for a better evening for the weather. John also reported that the next Membership Meeting is scheduled for October 20th and is to be a Dinner Meeting. Possible locations were discussed, and Bill Watkins volunteered to contact the Smoke House in Toluca Lake for a possible site. The possibility of having Phil Hill as the speaker was discussed.
~3ITOR’S REPORT: Connie stated that the July/August Newsletter had been ready for mailing for 1% weeks, but she did not have labels. It was suggested that Board members meet at the Porschop on Friday night, August 5th, to help Connie label and staple. Connie also stated that she would like articles for the September/October issue no later than August 15th. Entertainment for the Christmas party on December llth was discussed. SECRETARY’S REPORT:. Peggy expressed how glad everyone was to see David Givens at the Board meeting. MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Judd reported that Mr. and Mms. Housman are the proud parents of a BOY, named Ryan Edward, born on Sunday, July 31st.

The 3rd Mmlibu Grand Prix series was discussed. Possible locations are Long Beach and Pomona. Judd suggested that POC be invited. The date is to be October 16th.

Bill Watkins suggested having a tent at Riverside on November 5/6 for the Enduro.
Bill Watkins moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:10 p.m. Brent seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

AN OPEN LETTER By definition, "... . resides more than 150 miles frc~ Los Angeles. " means a "distant member" of _~C. By the circumstances of geography, Las Vegas is on the "outskirts" of PCA Zone 8. In PCA Zone 8, I am given a I0 point bonus for doing seven out of eight times per year what most others do one out of eight times; i.e., drive 500 miles on the freeway so that I can drive on a 2 mile race track. In POC, I just do it for the fun of it all.
We all know that the "first come-first served"rule for garages is a good one and a fair one. It is especially good and fair if you live close to the L.A~ Post Office. If you reside mere than 150 miles from the L.A. Post Office, you will find, by a simple long-distance call, that the first-come have already been served first because the deadline was yesterday. (~ybe ~m Bell is in on the conspiracy] also!).
Over the years I have noticed that there seems to be a subtle trend against the minority group of "distant" and "on the outskirts" people. Let me explain:
Registering complaints without offering solutions is called bitching; whereas the offering of a few possible solutions changes the bitches to constructive criticism.
I believe it started with the dirty fingernail bunch, you know, the tech inspectors. They held one pre-tech and. then two, but rarely outside of the 150 miles territorial limit of L.A. It seems that the Friday night tech always had spotters a few miles up the freeway and when they saw a "distant member" approaching, they would close tech, hide the free beer and lock up the registration forms.
Possible solutions:
The NHTSA posted 55 mph speed limit signs, so now it takes lots longer to get to the track and back. Next, the U.S. Government made me buy a vehicle with so much emission stuff, it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go 55 mph uphill anyway-so now the trip takes longer still. Then, the environmentalists made me buy unleaded fuel so I can make this longer and now more costly trip in clean air - north of Cajon, that is. After that, foreign governments raised petroleum prices so the costly trip costs still more.

E. Now of all things, the postal service has joined these forces in the fight against me in a most insideous, unscrupulous and underhanded manner-they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; t let me have a garage, or compete for a garage at Riverside.
Petition the postal service to deliver mail to every recipient, no matter where he lives, exactly seven days after mailing. Accept no garage applications unti! the morning of the event. This would naturally change the "first-come--first-served" rule to "the early bird gets the .Quadruple the garage fee so only the very wealthy would apply. The rule for this apDroach would, of course, be "The rich get richer." Leave garage assignments under the authority of a small (corruptible and bribable) con~ittee where another famous line might apply, "never have so many, owed so much, to so few." Give the garages to the first 17 people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ask for them, thereby applying the rule, "the meek shall inherit the garages."

September B.oard Minutes Judd Boykin, President, called the meeting to order at 7: 45 p.m. at the West End Garden Restaurant. John Fels moved to dispense with the reading of the August Minutes and to approve as typed. Bob Housman seconded and the motion carried unanimously. SECRETARY’S REPORT: Peggy Watkins reported that Dan Gurney and Phil Hill both wanted money to speak at our October Dinner meeting, but there is still the possibility of getting John Fitzpatrick. She stated that she will have an answer within the next few days. VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: John Fels reviewed the dinner meeting in October. TREASURER ’ S REPORT: Brent Morrow stated that he had not been given the bank statement; therefore, he could not make a report on the balance of the Club’s bank account. However, he stated that the Club is definitely solvent. Judd reported that there are still outstanding invoices sent to advertisers for the Cc~petition Rules booklet. ACTMTIES REPORT: Bill 97atkins stated that the October Dinner meeting will be held at the Castaways Restaurant in Burbank, and that the menu had been selected. Jeff Bear stated that there was a possibility of getting Roger Mears for the dinner meeting, Bill stated he is working on a POC/PCA Challenge for the Mmlibu Grand Prix. TECH REPORT: Suggestions for future tech meetings were discussed.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Bob Housman stated there were ii new members. EDITOR’S REPORT: Connie Fern stated that she has possibly found an Editor for the Porscherama. She also asked for volunteers to help put the Newsletter together on Thursday, September 15th. She reported that we had one new advertiser. The Christmas party was discussed and Connie reported that Ted Jewell will be doing caricatures of everyone’s car, if they will bring a picture. Connie also stated that the photo contest will be announced in the upcc~ing issue of Porscherama. Judd Boykin stated that he will take charge of getting a harpist for the Christmas party. PRESIDENT’S REPOP~: Judd Boykin reported on various letters he had received and u~pccraing Zone 8 events. He stated that a policy needs to be initiated to determine if a participant in a time trial is running POC or PCA only for insurance purposes. There was discussion of the upcoming time trial which is a POC/GGR event. Nominating C~udttee: The positions available on the Board for 1984 were discussed and Tom Linton stated he would be interested in the Tech Chairman’s position; Sandra Linton stated an interest in becoming the Treasurer; and Jeff Bear was interested in becoming the Membership Chairman. ~,~m~ ~, ~ 22

Parade Impressions Continued W~ile the speed event got underway, Tuesday and Wednesday found the Dana Racing Team thrashing their "trick" Nissan through the tules towards St. Louis to visit family. Learned a lesson about suburbia. Five-acre lots make for great neighbor relations (dream on, Doug--roc~ for a real garage and every rusting Porsche hulk in sight!), Thursday was spent at the autocross site watching the hotshoes have at the pylons. I believe the Garrettson Slalom Attack Team poste~.~, fastest time with their 914, as usual. The course was long and fast (75-85 mph average) and looked and felt like a Sebring with weeds growing through the cement and bumps everywhere, A successful event, extremely wellmanaged. The deadbeats wouldn’t let me roll the Nissan! Agfa-Gevaert, the film company, sponsored several Parade events (cocktail party, free film galore, etc. ) and retained Petersen Photographic’s Technical Director, Lief Ericksenn, for two very witty and informative photo seminars. His addiction is space flight photography, and he came with some amazing Cape Kennedy photo goodies. The Ozarks were fairly dull topographically and scenerywise, so we all shot film in the proper proportions. 5 to 1 favor of those funny little German cars.
An honoroed guest of PCA, Helmuth Bott, presented two fascinating glimpses into Porsche history. Mr. Bott is currently technical director of Weissach for Porsche AG. He has held several posts including director of factory racing during parts of the 50’s and 60 ’s. His presentation was of films from his personal collection of development studies done on 356’s and 550’s in the 50’s, and Nurburging Races of the 50’s and 60’so Many famous Porsche faces were seen: Richard Von Frankenburg, Joachim Rindt, Feny Porsche, etc. etc. It was nice to know that the factory began at "s~uare one" like the rest of us-beer bottle pylons; coursemarkers made from 356 brake drums and broomsticks; and 8n~n cameras mounted with racer’s tape under a Carrera fender to study shock travel and settings. The RJnng photos showed all the factory teams of the 60’s. Ferrari, Maserati, Lotus, Ford GT-40 ’ s--all in abundance and intensely competing. Friday found Vern Covert this year’s victim for the Dana "We’re the Guffah-wee" Directional S~AT Team." (Have your fingernails grown back yet, Connie?) A pleasant yet challenging 200 mile course was la~d out and it’s a good thing Vern knows you don’t find a "T" on a major North-South State thoroughfare. This year’s banquets were enjoyable and endurable, with the exception of the "chicken item" that would have had Frank Perdue growing hair. Are Ozark’s chickens like Kentucky Oysters? I think so. A very interesting business liaison was announced at the final banquet. Porsche AG has acquired Chuck Stoddard’s Ohio P/A dealership for the purpose of marketing factory Porsche parts. Peter Schutz (President of Porsche AG) announced a promise to provide (and I quote), "every part for every car we have ever produced." How’ s that !
John suggested that, tentatively, New Member meetings should be scheduled for the Spring and the Fall. John Fels moved to adjourn the meeting at 9 : 40 p.m. and Brent Morrow seconded. The motion carried unanimously. Respectfully submitted, ~

This year’s Tech Quiz was the final "official" event I attended, and was also well-organized and fun. The questions were geared towards real advancement of your Porsche knowledge and not strictly a "trivia" game. Read the bible! So, another week of Porsche-phobia completed. It would have been nice to see some more L.A. Region faces. One gets tired of answering the question: "So where are all those CA cars we’re constantly told about?" 1984 will find the Parade in Appleton, Wisconsin, offering a run on Road America’s 4 mile long road course for the speed event.
