PCA-LA at a GLANCE PCA-LA is 550 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine, PORSCHE PANORAMA, and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilarating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.

ABOUT THE COVER Former President Judd Boykin was named Zone 8 "Enthusiast of the Year" at the Awards Banquet in Apple Valley, January 14, 1984. Our congratulations and a big "’Thank You./" to Judd./ -2-
mer, our Four-Club Time Trial will be our only chance to use Riverside Raceway so we will want to gear-up for this and make it a smash success. As you can see from the above, PCA/LA is alive, well and looking ahead. With your help and participation we should make this a real Happy New Year.

John Fe/s, President
PCA CALENDAR The following letter has been received from Hank Ma/ter, President, Porsche Club of America:
A very happy and Prosperous New Year to you all. May this New Year bring you health, happiness, and of course, increased resale value for your Porsche.
The 1984 Porsche Panorama Calendar, as advertised in Pano, is the first effort of Porsche Club of America to put out an official calendar appealing to the needs of our members.
We have already had our first Board of Directors meeting for the new year and we can all look for some positive changes in our Club. This Board has pledged to bring you, first of all, a timely Porscherama. We are all aware of the problem of communication, and our Newsletter must give you plenty of time to make plans ~nd participate in Club activities. Under the editorship of Jon Schiewe, with all the printing and billing being done by Marx Advertising (Tom Marx is a wellknown member of our Club), we can expect a substantial improvement in the quality of the paper. Look for these improvements, and if you have any suggestions, or would like to contribute to our Newsletter, please let us know. As this is our Club publication, we would like our members to participate. We owe a great debt to Connie Fern for her almost impossible job of running Porscherama for the past three years. Easy it has not been, but Connie, with occasional volunteer help, put out a very fine publication.
To avoid a very substantial cash investment of club funds in this project, the Executive Council authorized a private commercial firm to produce the calendar and PCA will receive a royalty on all sales. PCA members designed the calendar and provided the outstanding photographs used. The variety of interests covered by the photos range from concour/ street machines to race cars both current and those with historical significance. The unique design of the calendar portion provides our members with space for notations about PCA events, meetings and other items of interest. The calendar is printed in four color, on high quality stock, with thirteen full color photographs. Sales of the calendar have been brisk. Only 3000 were printed and an adequate supply remains. There is no plan to have a second printing of this issue. Considering the facts that this is a first issue, small total quantity produced, plus the historical quality of its content should, without question, make this calendar a collectors item among porschephiles.
Other areas where we hope to improve is more Tech meetings, more social activities, and more participation by the general membership. We will be having four general membership meetings during the year and each one should be special and plans are already in the works for Dusty’s Barbeque, our 20th Anniversary celebration, New Member Meetings, the time trials, rally, concours and slalom series (yes, we will have slaloms). The success of all of our events depends on membership involvement, and we are counting on all 550 of you to find something that pleases and come If out an d en j oy yourse .

With the exception of Peggy Watkins, our Club secretary, and myself, we have a totally new Board. This new Board is committeed to making this year the best for our membership. We can’t thank Judd Boykin enough for his efforts on behalf of PCA/LA for the past three years. Those are big boots to fill, but we will do our best in keeping the traditions going strong and to add some new wrinkles here and there.

EDITOR’S NOTES
~
The key to the success of our plans is advertising. Our goal is to make the Porscherama self-sustaining and advertising is obviously the key. If you or anyone you know would be interested in or could benefit from an advertisement, please call me at home, (213) 3953714, Judd Boykin, (818) 981-3156, or Marx Advertising, (213) 626-3153. The key to a successful club with enthusiastic members is frequent communication. This is our primary goal. Hopefully a well-informed membership will mean a more adequate representation at events. In the future, "Headlights" is our president’s column. My column is "Taillights" found at the end of the bulletin. My intent is to use my column to discuss problem areas and potential improvements in all aspects of club activities. In this vein, I heartily recommend the proposal advanced by Skip Walton, also appearing in this issue. Don’t just read and forget it. Call and join! If we cannot resolve this soon, the time trials (our most successful events) are going to be in a lot of trouble. If participation becomes sufficient, no one will be over burdened with work and the events will run smoothly. I hope you will all enjoy the new Porscherama and I thank you for your initial patience.

Lap belts should be mounted so as to approximately bisect the angle between the thigh and the spine as viewed from the side. Competition shoulder harnesses should be mounted so that the rearward horizontal portion leaves the shoulders at an angle approximately 90 degrees to the spine as viewed from the side. Shoulder harness mounting that depends on the seat back either for position or for support in a crash will not be allowed. All high seats that would otherwise eliminate substantial contact of the lap belt with the occupant must have lap belt slots in the sides of the seats and the belts must run through the slots.

NOW YOU CAN IMPROVE HANDLING AND INCREASE SAFETY Here is the approved Stress Bar that meets current PCA Zone 8 rule no. VI I.A.2.k., specifically designed for no-hassle installations. Tested and proven to cut autocross lap times by as much as a furl second !!
Quickly converts the opentopped "’U’" of the front suspension to a more rigid trapezoid design by bracing the tops of the McPherson struts and the body pan in accepted race car practice. Keeps suspension tight, reduces body squeaks and groans -especially on Targas. Very little loss of luggage space, or bar removes in seconds with one wrench if required. Installed in less than 5 minutes, it’s equally valuable in non-competitive driving -a safety factor in emergency evasive action ! Choose from two sizes, the regular California Connection or the beefier Competition Connection - used for autocross or when any suspension mods or high performance tires are fitted. Both bars are highest quality materials throughout, cadmium-iridite plated. PCAC California Connection - 11/16" 4130 chrome-moly bar, .100+ wall $98.80 PCNC Competition Connection - 7/8" 4130 chrome-moly bar, .1875 wall $118.80

...Boy, OOES CE HAVE A REPUTATION !
Chances are, because we’re right here in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley, you tend to think of us as a "little neighborhood shop" specializing in machine work and special parts for Porschesand VW’s. Well, that’s right -- we give that sort of "hometown" service you like to get as "one of the gang." But CE’s fast and friendly way of doing business sort of spread out from here to other folks who also enjoyed the way they were treated as one of our local gang. Maybe we should be open about this -- our "local gang" hails from Honolulu, Houston, Muncie, Pom-

pano Beach, Prescott, Richmond, Seattle, St. Paul
even Toronto,
Frankfurt, Melbourne, Oslo and South Africa (to name a few). But, I|~ll~ll~|~k!l~ honestly, we’tl treat you just as well even if your hometown is down in L.A., or maybe even Pasadena !

Suppose they gave a time-trial and no corner workers showed? Well that’sjust about what we’re facing today. SCOOT (Sports Car Owners and Other Things), headed by Dan Hume, has provided trained workers for a fee for the last few years. They have repeatedly said this would be their last, as they are formally disbanding. But few really listened. That year has come to an end.
TH E TEAM
There appears to be three possible solutions to this dilemma. First, find another group to replace SCOOT. We welcome any suggestions or offerings to this end. To date we know of none. A second approach would be to return to the ways of yester-years; that is participants of the event also take turns working the corners. It was done in the past and even was required a couple of times recently. On the surface the price is right; free labor. You see the adage, no work, no time runs prevails under this system! However, several negative aspects are to be noted. Let’s take them in increasing importance: It’s inequitable. It always has been so even with the best of plans. Some end up working more than their share because of their good nature, while others always avoid working altogether. Next it’s time consuming. Changing workers every three run groups or so adds up to couple of hours a day. As we all know there are only so many hours in a day. The only thing left to do is make the on-track time less. Not only do the drivers have less time but they have to use it under less than preferred conditions. They may be unrested and hurried after coming in from working with their run group up next. Too much can be overlooked with the required energy and concentration unwisely reduced. This is neither enjoyable nor safe. Finally, this is further compounded by the uneasiness rightly generated in the driver while on the track at high speeds, that those working the corners are like themselves with little, if any, training in what is required and expected of them for fun events, let alone emergencies. The bottom line is it’s a gamble with the deck stacked against you. It’s simple math: unsafe events = unenjoyable events = less attendance = higher costs = too few = no events. Cheaper? Yes. But at what price? Damaged cars? Personal injuries? That brings us to the third alternative and the subject of this article, the formation of a new support group to fill the vacancy facing Porsche drivers primarily in Southern California. To this end a few of us involved in time trials started talking this idea up among ourselves a few months ago and a couple of small notices appeared in one or two regional newsletters. In response to these early efforts a small list of interested persons was created. The direction and purpose was clear but the implementation was unclear. One thing was obvious. If a new program is to emerge it would have to go from wellmeaning talk to action. To that end a rather hastily
and semi-organized effort came together in a pilot outing at the October PCA-POC time trial at Willow Springs. Despite the short notice and limited information available to all parties, seven from the list of fifteen initially interested persons volunteered to work. Don Hume generously offered an abbreviated classroom introduction at the track and Larry Hayden of Raceway. Rescue provided a hands-on demo in - 12-
draw from. Inasmuch as there is currently only two’ major tracks still available in Southern California, e~’ch with a minimum of nine turns, it will require about twenty volunteers per event. That’s two per corner, start/finish and ready grid. A minimum of thirty is, th~.refore, required to make this viable.
ORSCHE
We, therefore, are solicitating for more potential workers from any of the following ranks: males and females 18 years and older; persons interested in rac-
bySkip Wi/ton
ing and safety, members of PCA, POC, Porsche owners, other sports car owners, and any other interested persons or similar organizations. ~ ......
With six to ten events a year, not only is a sizable pool of helpers needed but also needed is a structure from which to efficiently work. The new organization is envisioned as a separate entity with its own identity being neither a PCA or POC affiliation. It would have the autonomy to contract services directly with either one or both jointly.
~
putting out a fire for all of those in attendance. Along with a half-dozen of the die-hard SCOOT workers the volunteers provided a relaxed and secure event. We even recruited two more people. A good first outing. Several of us who volunteered are also instructors and/ or competitors and will not always be available. So
All members of the pool will be trained and provided written information on the many aspects of corner working; i.e., flags, communications, rescue and safety procedures, and understanding of the rules governing time trials. Members are not obliged to work all events. You may only wish to work a certain track, and as personal schedules allow. Hopefully satellite pools can be formed in the more distantly located regions from Porsche activities centered in the Southland. Some materials have already been gathered and expert instructions are available now. While the efforts of others and myself have brought it this far a director is needed to continue the development of this program. The position is open to a dedicated individual willing to step in. I’ll remain as a liaison for PCA Zone 8 and be part of these efforts and the joint PCA-POC instruction program as well as inaugurating a new racing venture next year. What’s in it for you? Well, apart from the small moneys paid and/or reduced entry fees for those who drive part time, there truly is the reward of being connected to a group of others with similar desires and the respect and pride derived from performing an important service done in a professional manner. Besides, it can even be fun inspite of the work required. We seem to have gotten the cart before the horse, and well we should have. Bat, every organization has to have a name. To expedite the important matters I submit the following acronym: Team P.O.R.S.C.H.E. (Persons Offering Reliably Safe Corner Help Exclusively). Oh, yes, there is one very essential ingredient needed-YOU! Contact Skip Walton: (714) 998-4078 (recorder).

WE’VE CHANGED ........... CARS AND PRICES THAT IS: It’s that time of year again and for the first time 200 mph CART/PPG Indy cars will challenge the new 1.75 mile Long Beach street circuit. Again we will be located in our now familiar spot, the top rows of grandstand 3. For those of you that will be first timers, we feel this is one of "the" spots to see the action. One fast technical item, the Indy cars are more powerful and have smaller tires than their Formula One brothers and sisters. So they will get up to top speed faster, but will require more driver finesse to negotiate the tricky Ii turn road circuit. We have reserved I00 tickets and the price this year is $42.00 for a 3 day ticket.

TAILLIGHTS
Well, there you have the first issue of the ’84 Porscherama. It’s a little thin on the news, I admit, but it should be better soon. At least, you should be able to schedule the events you want to attend in the next couple of months. Soon a flyer will be coming out regarding the tech session scheduled for the week of February 13.
I want to remind members that you can earn 100 performance points for articles published in the Porscherama. I can assure you that virtually any article submitted will be published as long as it appears to be of general interest to members. Articles are welcome on the mechanics of Porsche’s for street or track use, concours tips, new products or developments, personal experience, insurance, and of course, reports of past events. Photos of interest are also welcome, but be sure to include captions. The next issue will include reports by Club officers. I also hope to be able to include an interview from Automotive News with Ferdinand Piech (grandson of Ferdinand Porsche and Audi Chief Engineer) regarding four wheel drive. Other plans include printing the prize winning photos from the annual club contest. As I have said, we are still making changes. We therefore not only welcome, but solicit suggestions. Jon Schiewe, Editor
I want to acknowedge the great job Connie Fern has done in editing the Porscherama the last few years. Starting with this issue, printing, paste-up, mailing and advertising will be professionally done. This quite obviously makes the job of editor substantially easier and less time consuming than it was for Connie. I don’t even have to type the articles. I know I would be unable to handle this job if I had to put in half the Time Connie put in on each issue. On behalf of the club, I want to extend an inadequate but sincere "thank you."

We plan an issue every other month. The off months, you will be receiving a short newsletter with announcements and calendar. Many of our ideas are in the formulative stage, so I will not announce them until they appear. Want to drive a Porsche 91 1 race car in SCCA or time trials? Rental programs are available, tailored to meet your needs. Included may be car ren.tal, personnel, trackside mechanic, towing and driver instruction. PORSCHOP featm’es:
