GENERAL

INFORMATIO N PCA-LA at a GLANCE PCA-LA is 550 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine, PORSCHE PANORAMA, and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilarating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy.

An era has ended with the closing and demolition of the L.A.P.D. course on Terminal Island, and the search for another slalom course is on. Results of the final PCA-LA LAPD event appear on pages 14-15; John Fels’s letter to the Times is on page 6, along with Mayor Bradley’s reply; and Jon Schiewe discussed the closing and its attendant problems on page 18. -3-

car was only 4.9 seconds, this over six hours! Also, to give you an idea of just how fast the winning cars were going, the winner completed 204 laps. The last place car running at the end (no significant lost time in the pits) completed 130 laps. At that rate, the winner was lapping this last place car a little over once every lap and a half.

HEA DLIGH~F~

One of the things that impressed me was just how safe the race was. One serious accident brought out the pace car and that was the only trouble the whole day. IMSA has done an excellent job in their regional program to promote safety. In the only accident of the day, the car, a BMW Sauber, was totally demolished going through a concrete block wall at turn one and ending up just before turn two, yet the driver was unhurt. If you haven’t yet been to Riverside to watch the races you’re missing some real fun. And, if you want to participate as a driver at Riverside, your only chance this year will be on the weekend of July 21st and 22nd when we have our annual 4-Club Time Trial there More information on this event will be sent to you, but mark your calendar as it’s great fun.

Having just come back from the IMSA races at Riverside, I’m full of Porsche. I had the pleasure of spending 3½ days with two Porsche cars, one competing and finishing the six hour race and the other running a little over the four hour mark. The point of telling you about this is the amount of sharing that went on. Everyone involved was interested in everybody doing well. Information, parts, physical help was everywhere to be seen, and yet this is the big time; racing for money as well as pride. Naturally, on or off the track, all the talk was how to get more from the car, when to pit, how long should a driver be out, how to pace the race, and what to do when a Chevy March or the 962 Porsche goes by you on the inside of Turn 2, or 6, or for that matter anywhere on the track. These super GTP cars don’t need a "line." They can go anywhere on the course at amazing speeds. The average speed for the winning car over Riverside’s "long course," 3.5 miles per lap, was 110 miles per hour, yet the differential between the first and second place

With the demise of Orange County Raceway last year, this leaves no place in or near the city for this kind of activity. Any person could use this raceway for a $5 fee, and now there is no place to go but the streets.

Thank you so very much for your support and love following my Sam’s death. It is comforting to know that I have so many caring friends.

John D. Fels Los Angeles

I would like to share the following with you.

From the Mayor

Sam and I met each other in the P.C.A.L.A. Club. We have been living together since November 1978 and were engaged to be married in May this year. When Sam died he took the magic and the summer with him. I lost the sunshine and roses, the laughter in our house. I lost the smile that lit up my life. However, there is always hope.

i~IFiLI~IL~ ~ I

This is what Dr. Leo F. Buscaglia wrote in his book The Way of the Bull: "’As long as we have hope, we have direction, the energy to move, and the map to move by. We have a hundred alternatives, a thousand ,paths and an infinity of dreams. Hopeful, we are halfway to where we want to go; hopeless, we are lost forever."

I have received your letter regarding the continuation of the auto racing activities on Terminal Island.

Everybody loved Sam. He never went a long time without smiling in life. He smiled at life and all the people in it. When you think of Sam, you smile,

The following letter is reprinted from the OpEdpage of The Los Angeles Times, April 10, 1984.

On April 4, 1984, the Board of Harbor Commissioners awarded a contract for extensive grading on Terminal Island to enable a tenant to the Port to develop a facility. Consequently, the permit for racing will be cancelled by the end of this month.

We have just learned from Ron Kennedy of the Property Management Division of the Port of Los Angeles that the property used on Terminal Island (formerly Reeves Field) by Big Willie’s Brotherhood Raceway and the Los Angeles Police Department’s pursuit-training course will be destroyed to expand the facilities of the Harbor Department.

I appreciate your concern and wish you and other racing enthusiasts the best of luck in your difficult search for a more permanent location. Sincerely,

This facility has been used successfully for a good many years by Big Willie and others as a means of keeping racing off the streets and in a controlled

Red Line Service, Inc. When master mechanics Peter M. Zimmermann and the late Alfred Lucas, Jr. opened the doors to their new Red Line Service, Inc., the first time back in 1976, they had a singular goal: to bethe best Porsche maintenance facility on the west side of town. Not the biggest. Not the busiest. The best.

Who’s a better salesman for Porsche or Audi than a PCA-LA Porsche driver? No one! That’s the way Max Deyerl owner of Max Dial Porsche Audi, Inc. in Inglewood sees it. And to prove it, Max has established a program with the Club whereby a check for $100 from Max Dial P/A goes into the PCA-LA coffers everytime a Club member refers a customer to Max Dial and he buys a car. The $100 is paid to the Club for any car purchase, for local or factory delivery, and applies to new Porsches, Audis and used cars.

Turn off Ocean Boulevard in Santa Monica and drive a few blocks away from the Pacific on Colorado Avenue and you’ll come to today’s Red Line Service. The facility is bigger, or as Zimmermann says "Since opening, we have gradually expanded to the point that we’re now about 99% self-sufficient. We’re still the place for general service and maintenance, of course, but we also do unit repairs; we have a complete machine shop; we do everything up to and including major transmission and engine overhauls."

Max is a dealer who really "speaks Porsche." Besides personally operating his own dealership for the past 10 years, Max also specializes in arranging for Factory delivery of new Porsches and Audis. A real Porsche enthusiast, Max sponsors the 914-6 driven by ex-PCA’er John Anderson which won ’82 and ’83 SCCA Regional Championships and is leading again this year.

At the same time, Red Line is moving more heavily into the racing arena. Club entries took Year End Championships in both 4/P and X classes, while associations with Topper Chasse and Mark Palmer produced excellent results in GT2, GTU and GT4 classes. The fourth-place GTU finisher at this year’s Riverside Enduro, driven by Topper Chasse and Bob Kirby, was prepped by Red Line mechanics.

Max Dial Porsche Audi, Inc. is located at 817 No. La Brea in Inglewood, one block south of Centinela. Telephone 678-3061.

PCA-LA and POC held a joint slalom on March 27 at the LAPD Pursuit course on Terminal Island. Judd Boykins’s crew teched the cars and practice runs began, The course is a tight one-mile course with many turnssome very sharp. All classes were represented as well

as some non-Porsche, non-class cars including Rich Jackson warming up his car for Long Beach. Results follow this article and the photos tell the story much better than I could. There were lots of locking brakes and a number of spin outs as drivers pushed their

Porsches to the limits imposed by the exacting course. Lots of instruction was given to the novices as well. The goodie store did a flourishing business and the weather was gorgeous.

Those who attended the recent tech session at the Merle Norman Collection will long remember this special event. In addition to the fine tour of classic automobiles and antique music machines, we were treated to a rare glimpse of the restoration area, and automobiles not normally displayed. Some of the more notable cars in the collection totalling more than one hundred were Packards, Duesenbergs, V-16 Cadillacs, a Pierce Arrow and a grand prix Bugatti. They even displayed a Porsche predecessor, the original 1946 Volkswagen Bug! After going through the basic tour of selected cars and antiques, we met downstairs where the Rolls Royce Phantoms are displayed. We proceeded into the final vehicle assembly area. There we found cars in various stages of reassembly and other completed cars which are rotated into the regular tour. One item of mention is that all the fully restored cars are gassed up and ready to go at a moment’s notice. They frequently drive all of the cars to keep them in good running order. J. B. Nethercut, president of Merle Norman Cosmetics, is very involved with the collection. As a major buyer of classic cars he .is approached whenever a unique car comes on the market. Not only does he buy cars, he also acquires as many spare parts to insure that his cars remain in perfect running order and concours appearance. We were informed that he has half a dozen spare Packard V-12 engines. From the final assembly room, we entered the painting area. In this large and spotless room were two complete spray booths and a separate painting area for smaller parts. The only painting not done on the premises is the powder painting of certain suspension parts. The behind-the-scenes tour ended in the metal fabrication and wood shop. We saw a complete wood frame which was in the process of being skinned with new sheet metal. This is certainly remanufacturing, not resto rat io n ! The Porsche Club would like to extend its thanks to Michael Regalia who is responsible for all the beautiful concours paint jobs. Michael arranged and personally guided this special tour. It is a shame that more club members did not attend this tech session because it was so unique and special. Tom Linton and Jon Stern

until you find that your selection is unappreciated. In a tech session, we don’t know the choice is unpopular until no one shows up. We want to avoid that occurance, so please let us know your interest. Help us formulate our shopping list. Write, or call Tom Linton.

TAILLIGHII~S

Well, that wraps up the June issue. As your editor, I would appreciate your criticism of the Porscherama. I’m sure improvements could be made. Please let us know. If you have a topic or area of special knowledge you would like to. share with the membership, we will welcome all articles. Also, don’t forget that we need advertisers. We have a very select readership, generally affluent with a definite interest in common and a circulation over 500. Our rates are reasonable, also. Your imput for all of the above will be of great help to the club and the bulletin and will be deeply appreciated. Jon Schiewe, Editor

Ten Commandments

We would appreciate some input from our readers in a couple of areas. Suggestions will be given full considerations by the Board of Directors and will be reported in the Porscherama. First, due to the loss of the LAPD pursuit course, we need a new location for slaloms. It needn’t be an existing track, but a large open space where cones can be set up will suffice. A large parking lot would work for example. The problem is that it must be available for nearly a full day to our exclusive use. Naturally, a reasonable fee for the use is anticipated. This is a pressing issue. It should not be impossible to find a new location if we set our minds to it. Slalo~ not only provides practice for time trials, it is an excellent place to learn the finer points of driving your Porsche. Write or call any board member with your suggestion, Elsewhere in this edition, you will find the text of President Jon Fels’ letter to the Times regarding the loss of the track aswell as Mayor Bradley’s reply. From these, it is obvious that we need a new location, Secondly, we would like your suggestions for tech sessions. The tech sessions can cover a myriad of topics. Tom Linton has scheduled two great sessions so far but is anxious to know what areas you would like covered in future sessions. After all, the purpose of tech sessions is to serve members interests. We can’t really do that unless you let us know of your interests. Should we cover insurance, law, mechanics, operation or some other special interest. Without your imput, trying to schedule tech sessions is rather like grocery shopping for someone else without a list. It is pure luck if you happen to buy the right items, Worse, you don’t know you made the wrong choice
