GENERAL INFORMATION PCA-LA AT A GLANCE PCA-LA is 550 diver~e Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest single marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine, PORSCHE PANORAMA, and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what The Los Angeles Region offers is an opportunity to share the exhilarating (and sometimes frustrating) understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique experience of automobiles of all time. Enjoy.

November January

We’re winding down on the year 1985 which has been a good one for PCA/LA and looking forward to 1986. I feel that your Board of Directors has served you well during the past year and ha5 acted in a responsible manner. Three members of the Board are stepping down. Jon Winthrop, Vice-President, Sandra Linton, Treasurer, and Tom Linton, Tech Chairman have done well these past two years and deserve our thanks for the time an effort put forth on behalf of our Club. I want to add my thanks on a personal level and say what a delight it has been to work with all three of these fine people. Early in December we will have a Board of Directors planning meeting to lay out the activities for the coming year. We would like your input as to what you want from the Club in 1986 and the years to come. Please, either call or write me (my phone number is listed on page 3 of Porscherama) about what it is you want. Without this information we, the Board, can only act as we think things "should" be, rather than through a direct communication with our membership. We want your help and want to listen to your ideas! Let me wish each and everyone of you the very best for the coming year. May Santa treat you well and all your wishes come true in 1986. And remember... Drive your Porsche safely...

JUDD AND GEMMA BOYKIN WITH THEIR 912 RACER AT THE JUNE ANNIVERSARY CONCOURS AT WILL ROGERS STATE PARK. A TIGHT FIT FOR A 6’6" LAWYER!

My last article, "Getting Into Time Trialing" (Porscherama, June/July 1985) ended with my dreaming about taking the next step and time trialing a race car. Thanks to the kind offer of Judd Boykin, I did just that in a 912 racer at the recent Willow Springs event. Over the past several months, I’ve been gradually acquiring a complete driving outfit and now have the suit, underwear, hood and socks. They don’t make shoes to fit my dainty "13D" feet so I wear high-top Indian mocassins that both do the safety job and have thin soles to minimize the leg-room problems. My bod just was not made to fit in a race car with lots of room to spare--using a shoe horn is more like it. Speaking of fit--I usually drive my Targa, so headroom is no problem, what with my ground effects helmet. In a coupe, however, the height tolerances are more clearly defined. A couple of weeks before the event, I went to Judd’s house to try on my ride. The first difference between my street car and the racer was the roll cage which required me to enter through the window. The good news was that I had enough headroom. The bad news was that I had not put on my helmet yet. Judd had modifications made to the seat bracket and at my next fitting I could wear my helmet--I did put racer tape on the top because I only had maybe an inch to spare. Study Case. We arrived early for Tech. The scene was a big change from my now familiar Saturday morning. We arrived with the car on a trailer pulled by a truck loaded with a spare engine, transmission and other parts and the full complement of tools necessary to handle just about any situation. Lucky thing too! We did not pass Tech. The front wheels had too much play. The front right wa~ pulled and the bearings appeared tight enough. Things looked bad. We discovered, however, that the shock had worked loose. Once tighted, all was okay. We then pulled the left front shock, which, of course, was fine. After reassembling it, we pulled the bearing, which was loose. I climbed in and got my first taste of a race car. Judd’s car has a 901 gearbox which, unlike the vast majority of street cars, has second through fifth gears in the "H"

pattern rather than first through fourth. Big difference! The first day was spent getting used to the box. Really, so was the second. Unlike the case with my Targa, all of the breaks were spent making adjustments to the car, rather than socializing. I also spent a lot to time just sitting in the car taking mental laps, trying to get the shift pattern into my thick skull. The first day’s adjustments just didn’t help. Carl Young, of Las Vegas, checked out the car over night and found broken pieces of plastic in the distributor, which we pulled out and replaced Sunday morning. This helped some, but the engine was still very rough and kind of crapped out beginning at about 5000 or 6000 RPM. This really hurt because I needed speed in the straights to make up for my problems in the corners. The 912 had far more cornering ability than I was used to. It’s lighter and stiffer than my Targa and, of course, has racing tires. The car could go much deeper and faster into the corners than I was used to and I never pushed its cornering anywhere near the limit. Nevertheless, I did take Turn 3 and the Sweeper (8 & g) much faster than in my own car. My timed runs on Sunday were no faster than last year in my Targa, but I was still happy. I had taken a lot of time off my Saturday runs to drive a race car for the first time. I had to get over that psych-out, get used to a new shift pattern and deal with a less-than-perfect engine. Yet, it was all an exciting experience. Even the engine problems made the weekend more "real." Did I win? No. Do I care? Of course. But I had a great time and that was really the purpose of the whole weekend and, in that regard, it was a tremendous success. THANKS JUDD!

WWKINS G N: A

THE TROOPS LINE UP FOR TEAM PORTRAIT SATURDAY MORNING.

EVIDENCE OF THINGS THAT GO "BUMP" IN THE NIGHT.

Imagine driving through a blue-colored tunnel at night in a fog bank. That’s an accurate description of our driving experience at Watkins Glen International Raceway during the Firestone Firehawk 24-hour race October 12-13. The Watkins Glen circuit is lined with powder blue colored Armco. At night, and especially in the rain (which it did for more than eight hours of the 24-hour race), the Armco becomes your only visible definition of what turn you are entering or where an apex exists. Starting from the beginning: Larry Amberg, Rick Jackson, Paul Lewis and I competed in the race in a Nissan (heaven forbid!) 300ZX Turbo in the finale of the Firehawk championship series, aptly sponsored by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, which provides the spec tires for all competitors to use (read buy). The car is owned by Leo Weber, proprietor of Leo’s Foreign Car Service in Redondo Beach. Larry, Rick and myself are all PCA-LA members and generally you will find us racing Porsches, not Japanese cars. However, the Nissan is very competitive in the Firehawk series ~nd this gave us all an opportunity to run a different race facility, We never got a lot of time on the race track for practice as the fog rolled in off Seneca Lake 15 minutes after the start of Thursday evening’s night practice session. So

all competitors had to drive in the race without the opportunity to test car, driver and lights. This led to some frantic early evening non-scheduled pit stops by some competitors to change headlight adjustments away from the trees and someplace closer to the road. This made Saturday morning’s qualifying session even more remarkable. After just a handful of practice laps, I qualified the car on the pole and set a new track record for the Firehawk cars! That was a thrill and it set out to catch up the first lap fracas that soon occurred. The race started at 1:00 p.m. Saturday and it was quite a sight seeing 65 cars steaming into turn one, which is a 90° right-hander, requiring hard braking and shifting from 5th to 3rd gears. Paul Lewis started the race for us, got a little too deep and spun in front of the entire pack. We went promptly into 28th place at the end of lap #1 and then set out to catch up. Unfortunately, the car suffered off-courseexcursions that caused some extensive pit stops to bang out bent sheetmetal, readjust suspension settings and generally tape things together with racers’ tape. It became a long uphill battle to regain the lost positions. Under the circumstances, we did quite well, finishing 4th in the Sports class and 7th overall. The rain was another story. Just before I started my first stint, about 5:30 p.m., it started to rain. After I started,

~t began to pour. Buckets! The track surface became very slippery and really started to separate the experienced from the non-experienced. Many bent cars and bent egos occurred during the long night, much of the time during which it dumped and got cold. Later, we even heard rumors that it snowed someplace near turn 5!

Lauretta Lucas and Ellie Amberg did the timing, Rick Gutierrez and Joe Brozman were the fuelers, Skip Walton, Pablo Macias, Brad Hand, Walt Huff and Patrick Navias were the mechanics. Except for a couple of hours off to get warm in the motor home, everyone stayed up the entire race.

driver errors and bent sheet metal, the car performed flawlesslyforover 1670miles. Weaddedonequartofoilin 24 hours, and aside from brake pad changes (too many) and adding fuel, we did absolutely nothing mechanically to the car. Then again, neither did the Carlsen Porsche+Audi crew do anything to their 944, which walked away with the race, beating the 2nd place car by over 12 laps. The team of Walt Mass and Jon Milledge (Golden Gate Region members) won the race and the Firehawk 1985 championship in the car, attesting to the value of experience, smooth error-free driving and outstanding car preparation and pit work by their team. For this race, Walt and Jon added Nies Keerop and Drake Olsen to their team and they all did an outstanding job. Honestly, professional showroom stock racing is a realblast. We hope to get a car to campaign for the entire season in ’86 and go for the championship ourselves.

Lauretta formerly owned and time trialed a 911SC. Ellie time trials her gold 928. Rick time trials his 914 Nclass car. Skip Walton is an active Orange Coast Region competitor. And Joe has been my racing crew chief for years. We really had a great time and despite the weather, we all had smiles on our faces when the checkered flag fell at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

Sunday evening was spent celebrating in a Watkins Glen eatery and the trip ended with a brieftourof Niagara Falls and then the long trip home. Rick Jackson managed to convince the Eastern Airlines people that we were indeed celebrities, so we got bumped up to first class for the long Atlanta-Los Angeles flight. It was a great way to end an exciting trip to upstate New York.

A note about the Nissan... in spite of assorted

MY CAR THE ST* R Just as I was preparing to send this issue to press, I got a mildly frantic call from Arthur Studios. This is a production company for original sit-corns for WTBS. They were in rather desperate need of a silver 928. Apparently they had just replaced the female lead in one of their shows and had to refilm a very short (3-5 seconds) shot

~

for the weekly intro to the show with the new star leaning out of the window of the 928. The cgr they had originally used was no longer available and not a rental company in town had a silver 928. They found the PCA Hotline in the phone book and reached president John Fels who (knowing of my car) immediately referred them to me. SoSaturday, November 2, Glenda and I drove into Hollywood for my car’s screen debut. (Does it need to join a union?) I didn’t know it ahead of time, but it turned out to be my debut as well, though you probably won’t be able to see me at the wheel. As it happened, they needed a driver.

The plot of the series involves a young woman who

has just moved from Peoria to Chicago and is living with her older brother who is a sportscaster--thus the title Safe at Home. The intro is her arrival in Chicago and the ride in her brother’s 928 as she sees the big city for the first time. I drove the car around the block and past the camera about a dozen times, having to slow to a crawl (my speedometer barely registered) as we passed the camera, and

while this very attractive young actress knelt in the passenger seat while leaning way out the window. It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it. The car probably never went so slow for so long in its 7 year life, but it sparkled in the limelight. At first it was a little jerky as I eased it by at under 5 mph but after a few rehearsals it seemed to sense its role and adapted to a very smooth performance. In addition to the fun of participating, I was paid $100 and a copy of a video tape of the show when my car debuts plus a studio tour. The car showed off beautifully for the actress on the back side of the block as if it wanted her to see what it was really capable of doing but it seemed a little let-down afterwards. I did notice it perk up Monday morning and pull toward the La Brea exit to Hollywood as I went to work. Now that my car thinks it’s an actor, it will probably be more temperamental than ever. (Sigh!) Such isthe price of stardom. ¯ Jon Schiewe, Editor
