03.04.13 - 03.08.13 When the Business Expo committee met to begin planning for the 2013 event, one of the first things the group did was review previous year’s exhibitor surveys. Building on information noted in the surveys, this year’s event is bigger and better than ever before. Here is a snapshot of what’s new: • The one day Business Expo is now a weeklong Business l Consumer MarketPlace extravaganza; • New event locations - SentryWorld and UW-Stevens Point Dreyfus University Center; • Impressive schedule of speakers; • Corporate Culture Panel; • Social Media Conference at UW – Stevens Point Small Business Development Center; • Schmooza Palooza networking event; • 2-hour Job Fair prior to the Business Expo; While this may sound a bit clichéd, there is definitely something for everyone to attend or get involved with throughout the week.

SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR Sandra’s Lasting Impressions received the 2012 Small Business of the Year Award, presented by the Portage County Business Council. The award is chosen based on: Sales growth, Employment growth, Customer service,
Community service, Leadership involvement, Innovative efforts adapting to marketplace changes. Sandra’s Lasting Impressions has experienced steady growth for over six years, which can be attributed to community support, an ongoing goal to provide quality merchandise, one-of-a-kind items, and customer appreciation. It all started over six years ago when owner, Sandra Galloway drove past a familiar building located at 2205 Post Road in Plover, Wisconsin with a for rent sign on it. She made an appointment to look at the building, a commercial site with an area of 800 square feet plus an attached 1200 square foot ranch home. She envisioned with some paint, flooring, curtains and hard work, this could be “Her Store”, something she always dreamed of! So in the late summer of 2006 Sandra’s dream became reality and on November 16, 2006 she opened Sandra’s Lasting Impressions – a store that provides unique fashions, gifts galore and home decorations to entice. They continue to grow by expanding their merchandise and by adding a 20x30 foot Women’s Boutique and two dressing rooms. Ongoing commitment to the community is evident through donations, involvement and support to many organizations including, but not limited to the Portage County Business Council, Plover Area Business Association, Women’s Fund of Portage County, and many local community events and activities. Congratulations to owner Sandra Galloway and her team at Sandra’s Lasting Impressions for receiving the 2012 Small Business of the Year Award!

Award criteria includes: Making capital improvements, Significant growth and development, Increasing employment base, Planning and implementing special marketing campaigns, Making significant community service contributions. Today, the Stevens Point Brewery is proud to be Wisconsin-owned and independently operated. They continue to work hard, as their founders did, to continue to provide customers today with quality award-winning beer. The growth and development they have experienced includes four expansions in four years. Operating Partner, Joe Martino announced at the event that the fourth expansion will add 5,600 square feet of space and a second kettle to the brewery, bringing capacity to 150,000 barrels a year, up from 120,000. This $2 million project, scheduled for completion in May, is the result of expansion of the Point brand and continued growth in contract brewing See ANNUAL DINNER/Page 9

A Message to our Members is a bi-monthly article written from one of our directors at the PCBC, a PCBC board member, or a PCBC committee member. This month’s message is from Mary Jo Monday, Director of Member Relations at the Portage County Business Council.
It’s been said time and time again, that the people of Portage County go above and beyond to help others. Whether it’s volunteering with a particular organization, providing complimentary tax services to those with financial challenges or raising funds to support a cause, it’s impressive to see individuals step up to the plate. Once again, I am proud to share that our members are volunteering their time and talents to help others in our community seeking assistance with resume writing and enhancing their interview skills.
early evening on resume writing. These sessions are open to our members and the general public, free of charge. He will then offer complementary one-on-one resume critiques in half-hour increments between the two sessions.
Over the last several years, there has been much talk about businesses struggling to find the right employees to fill available jobs even with the high rate of unemployment. Discussions on how to “close the skills gap”, ways for schools to tweak the curriculum to remain current on meeting the needs of area businesses have risen to the forefront. We read about it, hear about it and talk about it on a regular basis.
I do have one final plea. Please share these amazing opportunities with everyone you know, especially individuals seeking jobs.
Seeing a need, the 2013 MarketPlace Committee has coordinated a 2-hour job fair prior to the start of the Business Expo on March 7. Businesses exhibiting at the Business Expo from Noon – 5:00 pm are encouraged to participate in the Job Fair from 10:00 am – Noon. Both the Job Fair and the Business Expo are free and open to the public.

When I sent out a plea to our members asking for volunteers to conduct “mock interviews” the same afternoon that Tim is offering his resume writing sessions, the response was amazing. Individuals from Lands’ End, ABR Employment Services, NCWWDB, Dermatology Associates, Northwestern Mutual, Manpower, Wisconsin Public Service and the YMCA have volunteered their services. Others have agreed to be added to the waiting list if the need arises. Impressive? Yes. Surprising? Not for members of the PCBC.

ANNUAL DINNER From Page 3 for about a dozen other craft beer companies, including Capital Brewery in Middleton. The project includes more fermentation tanks, an automated grain handling system and a new can packer that will allow the brewery for the first time to package four-pack and six-pack 12-ounce cans. Including this year’s expansion, capital improvements will total $4.6 million since 2009. Ongoing commitment to the community is evident through donations, involvement and support to many organizations including, but not limited to the Portage County Business Council, Community Industries, Point Bock Run, Green Circle Trail, United Way of Portage County, American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Riverfront Rendezvous, Trivia, UWSP Athletics, Iola Car Show, B3 Bike Ride and numerous donations to Church picnics, benefit fundraisers and special community events.
