generations and two locations later, Frank’s Hardware is now located on Highway 10 in Stevens Point and owned by Eric “Rick” Klein and his wife Linda. Their two children, Sarah and T.J., are also actively involved with the business. Most of the staff members have been here long enough to remember the now 25 and 27 year old owner’s kids as elementary school students. Amidst the walkie-talkie chatter regarding fasteners, and plumbing, and even which type of deck stain to use; you’ll find Rick using all of his 50+ years of experience on the sales floor helping customers along with the rest of the crew. Becoming a member of the Portage County Business Council in 2008 has turned out to be a fantastic decision for us. PCBC IN GOOD COMPANY The Member Retention Program is broken down into three phases. First, participants joined in a live webinar where Cathi shared information about the upcoming training session. She also assigned everyone homework (member reports) in preparation for the day long training. Several weeks after the webinar, Cathi was on-site for phase two, leading the day-long training session, jam-packed with relevant and timely information and materials to aid Chambers in the member recruitment and retention process. Having time to network, share ideas and swap membership materials with our peers was extremely beneficial as well. What do Austin, Texas, Honolulu, Hawaii, Indianapolis, Indiana, Boulder, Colorado, Kansas City, Missouri and Stevens Point, Wisconsin have in common? Each of these cities hosted Chamber guru and training extraordinaire, Cathi Hight, President of Hight Performance Group as she presented a day-long Membership Retention Program training session here at the Portage County Business Council. Based on Cathi’s excellent reputation among chambers and knowing she would draw a crowd, we opened the session up to all chambers that are members of the Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce (WCCE). It was exciting to have 40 Chamber of Commerce staff members from 29 different chambers throughout Wisconsin attend the session.

Phase three involves individual chambers using the tools Cathi provided to develop a retention plan appropriate for their organization. Once a preliminary plan is developed, each chamber can sign up for an hour-long, one-on-one phone consultation with Cathi to review their plan. At this time, Cathi offers suggestions on what, if anything needs changing and assists chambers to overcome roadblocks that prevent them from completing the plan. The training session was a success and the Business Council received many favorable comments from the visiting chamber attendees. We are currently reviewing our own member recruitment and retention plan that best fits our organization and our members. \\\\\

Elizabeth Helgeson — Saint Stephen School What sets this educator apart is her innovation in making impossible field trips, possible. Through the use of Skype in the classroom her students have been introduced to careers they may not have known existed. They have met an author and illustrator from New York, geologists, zoologists, volcanologists, an Iditarod team, oceanographers and other authors. Before these calls were made they were required to perform a job as a biographer, topographer, blogger, greeter, sharer, questioner, photographer or data collector capitalizing on these calls not just as a unique experience for her students, but as yet another avenue to engage in learning.

Rebecca Flaker — Saint Stephen School Mrs. Flaker links student’s everyday lessons to employment skills and careers on a daily basis in her classroom. From how to work on a team and communication skills, to integration of the goals of the Partnership for 21st Century skills, utilizing Junior Achievement programs and incorporating the use of technology. She volunteers to work with children who struggle with reading and behavioral issues so that the schedule will work better for their individual needs—and it has been a gift for those students. In her classroom,

We enjoyed meetings some new friends from the Central Wisconsin Resiliency Project and learning from our municipal leaders. The speakers’ candor and openness inspired many in the room to reach for leadership roles in our community and we learned of ways we can make a difference without being an elected official. We also learned what it takes to get elected in Portage County at various levels and what form roles and responsibilities take after the election. Thank you to our guest speakers Mayor Halverson and City Clerk John Moe and to our panel speakers, Patty Dreier, Logan Beveridge and Kelly Loken for a great evening of encouragement and awareness. \\\\\
