Participants of the 2012-13 class of Leadership Portage County met for their final monthly session, the closing retreat, on May 9, 2013, at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt which was followed that evening with a Graduation Dinner in the Alumni Room of the Dreyfus University Center. At the camp, the participants toured the grounds, including the Eyeglass Recycling Center, after taking on the challenging climbing wall. At the climbing wall, participants challenged themselves individually, setting their goals and utilizing support from their fellow participants to achieve them. Each participant also presented a personal mission statement as well as the group projects they had been working on for the entire program. Congratulations to this year’s LPC Graduates!

Travel Guard announced that the company won a 2013 Confirmit ACE (Achievement in Customer Excellence) Award. The honor, which Travel Guard has received for four consecutive years, demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to customer service. Travel Guard earned the award based on its customer feedback programs targeting customers around the globe. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, customers rated Travel Guard’s claims service an average of 8.6 and Travel Guard’s Assistance services an average of 8.7. Berard, Stevens Point, serves as co-chair of the Take A Step 5K, a community event benefiting domestic and sexual abuse victim services provided through CAP Services’ Family Crisis Center. Mary Patoka, CAP Services CEO, said Berard has volunteered with the Family Crisis Center for many years and has co-chaired the 5K since its inception in 2003. Deborah is originally from central WI, but for the past 20 years has lived in other parts of the country with her family, and is now returning to her hometown. Many people knew Deborah as the Executive Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Portage County. \\\\\ The Samuels Group has been selected as the design-build contractor for the renovations of Athletic Park, home of the Wisconsin Woodchucks. Phase 1 will include a team store, general seating, luxury suites, and a press box. Future phases will include new bleachers, retail areas, concession stands, and group outing decks. The City of Wausau will also be constructing a neighborhood park, as well as, providing new sidewalks, lighting, and parking improvements adjacent to the new stadium. Construction is scheduled to begin in August of 2013 and completed by the start of the 2014 season.

THE BOTTLE STOP AND RENE DANIELS RECOGNIZED BY BUSINESS COUNCIL One Portage County business and one individual in the County’s business community were singled out for honors on May 3rd at the Portage County Business Councils’ Small Business Breakfast. Over 140 people attended the event at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award was presented to The Bottle Stop, located at 35C Park Ridge Drive in Stevens Point, WI. The Bottle Stop was selected from several nominees by the Business Council’s Selection Committee based on their: • Growth and financial stability
• Dedication to customer service & community needs • Personal commitment • Innovative efforts to identify a market niche. The Bottle Stop has been a growing company since they opened in September 2011. The liquor store is locally owned and operated by Matt Lazarski & Bill Hoffman.

The Friend of Small Business Award was presented to Rene Daniels, Executive Director from the North Central WI Workforce Development Board for her ongoing and extraordinary support of small business in Portage County and commitment to expansion opportunities for businesses and noteworthy accomplishments related to small business. Rene brings a unique depth of knowledge and experience to the Workforce Development Board with over 30 years of professional experience working in multi-faceted private, nonprofit and public organizations in North Central Wisconsin. She maintains a close contact with businesses in Portage County and is able to keep an accurate inventory of workforce needs. She responds to workforce dislocations and works with those individuals to re-train them for new careers. During 2012, she provided training and re-training programs for over 400 individuals. Both The Bottle Stop and Rene Daniels are great mentors and advocates for small businesses in Portage County.
