The Ho-Chunk Nation’s tribal legislature has voted to move forward with plans to expand gaming operations at four casinos. The $144 million expansion will create nearly 320 new jobs in total and will greatly improve several of the Ho-Chunk’s gaming locations. One of the largest expansions will occur at the Ho-Chunk Gaming-Nekoosa casino in the town of Port Edwards. The tribe plans to build an $11.2 million hotel, a $4.5 million event center, and further expand parking structures and restaurant services. The Nekoosa casino expansion is estimated to create 75 new jobs and will also bring scores of construction-related jobs to the area. \\ CAP Services’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) served 658 households in its service area this past tax season. Volunteers helped eligible taxpayers claim $1.2 million in state and federal tax refunds, a 20% increase from last year’s total. “The dedication of our volunteers is really remarkable, going far beyond just a weekly commitment,” said Erin Olson, Project

MID-STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGE ADVOCACY FOR LOCAL FUNDING AND LOCAL CONTROL In Summer 2014, a Wisconsin Legislative Council study committee will convene to consider ending local technical college funding and governance and shifting all control and funding to a new statecontrolled college system. A change of this nature would endanger MSTC’s connectedness with local employers and communities, local decision making, their ability to respond quickly, and the capacity to customize solutions for the needs and people of its own district. Your advocacy for MSTC and Wisconsin’s technical colleges is vital to ensuring continuation of local funding and governance. An email offering additional details has been sent to all members in hope that individual employers will join the Portage County Business Council in writing a letter to local legislators voicing our dissatisfaction with these proposed changes. A copy of this email is included below, as well as links for the letter template and bullet points.

Your advocacy for MSTC and Wisconsin’s technical colleges is vital to ensuring continuation of local funding and governance. The Portage County Business Council Legislative Committee and Board of Directors encourages employers to join the PCBC in writing a letter to local legislators voicing dissatisfaction with these proposed changes. A letter template and bullet points are provided to help local businesses frame their message. Employers are encouraged to customize their letters whenever possible so that each letter is unique and representative of the business’s interests. If you are willing and able to participate, MSTC asked that we try to get the letters out in June so they all arrive to the legislators in the same time period.
Monday, June 16, 2014 5:00-7:00PM River View Lodge Assisted Living 1800B Sherman Avenue, Stevens Point, WI
You are welcome to email these letters. If emailed, consider Technical College Funding and Governance as the subject line. Letters are to be addressed to Rep. Scott Krug, and copied to the following: • Special Legislative Study Committee Chair John Nygren • Committee Vice Chair Sheila Harsdorf • MSTC President Dr. Sue Budjac • Senator Julie Lassa • Representative Katrina Shankland • Representative Amy Sue Vruwink
No Cost to Attend
For more information, contact Mid-State Technical College Director of Communications Karl Easttorp or President Sue Budjac.
The event will be outdoors, under the white tent overlooking the beautiful Wisconsin River. When you’re there, enjoy the live jazz music! Our host will be providing complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and other refreshments, and door prize giveaways. RSVP by Friday, June 13, 2014.
Thank you for your support.

SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIES Facebook users may have noticed a change in the content of their News Feed over the last couple of months, especially if you utilize the Facebook mobile app. While Facebook content is still created by the user, it is curated by a complex algorithm that Facebook designed. Understanding the main functions of this algorithm with help you have success in your Social Media Marketing for your business. This shift in back-end design has made it so that Facebook can monetize Groups and Pages while still keeping Facebook free for the every day user. Historically, it was rare for businesses, especially small businesses to pay for their social media presence. The ideas included here do not cost anything, although that option is up to you or your business, if you want to spread beyond your organic reach. Without going into complicated detail about how the algorithm works, the following are a few ideas that will help to keep your posts visible in your followers’ News Feed: 1. Post pictures with every update. Facebook now selects which posts are seen by your followers in their News Feed. Photo posts are statistically proven to be the easiest way to get your posts out there for the world.
businesses or people who post on your page or comment on photos or status updates. It might be the internet, but it’s still not polite. 4. If you are posting a link, paste the link in the status before you type any other words. This changes how the link is displayed and looks a lot cleaner.

LEADERSHIP PORTAGE COUNTY CLASS GRADUATION Participants of the 2013-14 class of Leadership Portage County met for their final monthly session, the Closing Retreat, on May 15, 2014, at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt. At the camp, the participants toured the grounds, including the Eyeglass Recycling Center, and then took on the challenging climbing wall. At the climbing wall, participants challenged themselves individually, setting their goals and utilizing support from their fellow participants to achieve them. Each participant also presented a personal mission statement as well as the group projects they had been working on for the entire program. A Graduation Dinner was held later that evening at the Holiday Inn in Stevens Point. Dr. Attila Weninger, the keynote speaker for the evening, challenged the class to hear and respond to the call of leadership. Congratulations to this year’s LPC Graduates!
