We’re looking forward to another exciting year for Leadership Portage County! This nine month program balances leadership skill development with a greater understanding of the issues and challenges facing Portage County, preparing participants for more active leadership roles in the workplace and community. There are only a few spaces remaining for this year’s class which begins on August 23rd. Participants come from diverse backgrounds representing business, government, arts, education and community organizations. Participation is open to any resident of Portage County, not just Portage County Business Council members. We also offer member businesses the opportunity to become a program or session sponsor. This is a great way to help support a valuable community program while promoting your business.

The Golf Classic was attended by 160 golfers who participated in the fundraising event. Circle of Friends is a non-profit foundation that is designed to improve the lives of children who have gone through medical and physiological challenges while coping with cancer. Circle of Friends was founded by former Green Bay Packer, Bill Schroeder along with Jerry Wunsch, a veteran of the Wisconsin Badgers and Seattle Seahawks. \\

AMBASSADORS TAKE PART IN UWSP FRESHMAN ORIENTATION The Ambassadors Club sponsored a community information booth at the Dreyfus University Center during UW-Stevens Point’s New Freshmen Orientation Program June 4 through July 11, 2013. The booth provided information from Business Council members and Portage County to new students and their parents. What they have to say \\ With a busy summer winding down, all of us here at The Bottle Stop are gearing up for our large events. We have been busy with our monthly wine tastings and helping everyone with weddings, family functions, and business outings. First on the list is the Big Brothers Big Sisters Taste of the Town August 10. This will be our second year helping out with this great event. Last year we were lucky enough to be chosen as “Best Beverage” and look forward to retaining our title. This program is one of the best-organized summer events at Pfiffner Pioneer Park. There is a great selection of food from local vendors and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

Later this fall we will once again be the wine sponsors for one of Portage County’s most anticipated events, Wines of the World hosted by the Portage County Business Council. While featuring some of the best food at any event, Wines of the World continues to please every year with great music, exciting raffles, and very fun crowd. We look forward to this event every year. We bring over 100 new wines every year and support them with some of the most knowledgeable staff in the industry. From the connoisseur to the beginner it’s a great venue to try and more importantly learn about great wine. In addition to the large events that we do we also provide in home wine tastings. This is a great way to accent a party or small gathering. We can provide just about everything that is need with very little required from the host. We have done these in the past and it’s a great way to learn about wine in a comfortable setting. We continue to hold monthly wine tastings here at the store the last Thursday of every month. These have become quite popular with our regular customers most of whom rarely miss an event. We usually sample between eight and ten different wines from 3:30pm – 6:30pm. The tasting is free and open to the public. We hope to see you at some or all of our upcoming events.

MEET THE NEW FACULTY AND STAFF OF OUR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS »REGISTER On Tuesday, October 1st, help the Portage County Business Council Foundation welcome new MSTC, UWSP and K-12 public/private faculty and academic staff during the 33rd annual social. Festivities begin at 5:00PM and conclude by 7:00PM at the BEST WESTERN Plover Hotel and Conference Center with Rockman’s Catering. Members of the Portage County business community welcome new faculty and academic staff members by hosting the reception in their honor. The event will feature a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres. Hosts are responsible for their event cost and that of one faculty or staff person (total $30).
This is an important opportunity for business and educational leaders to socialize and build contacts. This event has a proven track record of breaking down barriers and building a positive atmosphere between businesses and educational institutions. Ag Tour 2013 is set for Tuesday, September 17th from noon to 5:00pm. Planned by the Agri-Business Committee of the Portage County Business Council, you and your business associates are invited to attend. The theme for this year’s event is “Specialized Animal Agriculture”. The event begins at noon with a picnic lunch and guest speakers – Mary Hetzel and Doug Watson from St. Francis Horse Rescue & Retirement Farm, Inc. at Wisconsin Public Service Corporation in Plover. Their presentation for the event is “Our Dream is a Home for Every Horse”. After the picnic lunch, tours will take place at local agri-businesses including Central Wisconsin Fish Farm, Heartland Stables and Lake Elaine Game Farm. The event includes tours, bus transportation, a picnic lunch, socializing and education. Cost is only $20 per person. Registration is now open. Register soon as space is limited.

a message to our MEMBERS \\ This month’s message is from Kari Thompson, Business & Office Operations Director, at the Portage County Business Council. The Portage County Business Council staff has been working hard on team building and staff training and I would like to share an article that I read recently. It reminds us of the little things that we say and how we say them (even body language), when dealing with co-workers, family, friends, etc. It could help us in the workplace to better our relationships with co-workers, vendors, and customers…to unite, inspire, and engage.
The Power of Your Words Contributor: Mike Camp
How often have you been ashamed or embarrassed by the words you chose during a situation? Maybe you were speaking with friends, co-workers, or even family members. If you look back, most of these incidents likely occurred during a high stress situation where you were frustrated. Unfortunately, during times of high stress we tend to make bad decisions when it comes to the words that come out of our mouths. Certain situations bring along high tension and more episodes of frustration will inevitably occur; therefore, we must be careful in choosing our words. Remember, regardless of the situation, the use of the wrong words is never justifiable. If you say the wrong thing during a conversation, each of your words is like a stray bullet. Once the words are dispensed, they can never be retracted and we ultimately deal with the aftermath. With the potential for serious damage, we should all consider the impact our words have on others. To be clear, if someone is direct when communicating, it doesn’t mean they are a poor leader or that they are using the wrong words. At the same time, just because they choose their words wisely doesn’t mean they’re a great leader. There are going to be times in our careers when we need to be direct. As long as the words we select don’t break people down, most will understand the message. A good example of the power of words is revealed in movies depicting soldiers in boot camp. The goal of the drill sergeant is to “break down” the soldiers (both physically and mentally) then build them up. Choosing your words wisely is not a skill set considered when your goal is to break someone down. Although the ultimate goal is viewed as a positive, the method is not usually viewed as desirable. As leaders our goal is to build people up instead of breaking them down. When interacting with our team, there are three main concerns: 1) the words we use, 2) the tone of our voice, and 3) our body language. Even if the right words are chosen, the wrong delivery and poor body language can derail the message and it might not be properly received. Conversely, when someone is speaking to you with a genuine nature and sincere body language, the outcome of the conversation will influence you in a more positive manner. Tony Dungy once said, “When you commit to encouraging, comforting, and strengthening others with your speech, you are not only making their lives better, you’re also making yours better by surrounding yourself with people who are affirmed and encouraged.” What a great message about the true value of our words and how we can impact the lives of so many people if they are well chosen. Take time today to think about how you choose to speak to people around you. Would you be ashamed or proud of your words? Are you building people up or breaking them down? The uttering of a few simple words can spawn great things or create disasters. It’s up to you which words you choose. As leaders, our words are more powerful than we could ever imagine. With the right words, we have the ability to unite, inspire, and engage people all over the world to achieve the unthinkable.
