Describing Wellington Place, Administrator Amber Haferman stated, “I have been working with Wellington Place of Whiting for over 5 years. During that time we have built long-term relationships with families, clinics, and other health services. I cannot express how proud I am to be a part of such a quality facility that goes above and beyond for the residents who live here. Our staff truly cares about making the lives of our residents safe and enjoyable.” Wellington Place has been a proud member of the Portage County Business Council since 2010, and used these three words to describe the benefits of belonging to the organization: networking, friends, and opportunity. We are honored to have Mary Burke join us for our December Women in Business Event as she presents “From Courage to Confidence”. About Mary’s Presentation: Confidence is not something you are born with. It’s not something you acquire by reading a book. But it is something you can learn. Mary Burke shares insights from her personal story about how to build confidence. While it starts with the courage to take a risk, the destination is far less important than what we can learn while on the journey. In 2014 Burke, a businesswoman and community leader, stepped far outside her comfort zone and became the first woman to win a primary election for Governor in the State of Wisconsin. While Burke lost the high-profile, contentious and close race, she gained far more than she could have imagined. About our Speaker: Mary Burke is a businesswomen, philanthropist and community leader. She serves on the Madison School Board and co-founded the AVID/TOPS college preparation program which supports nearly 1,000 students as they aspire to earn a college degree. In 2014, she was the first woman in Wisconsin to be on the ballot for Governor representing a major party before losing in a close race to the incumbent, Scott Walker. Mary earned her BS in Business Administration at Georgetown University and her MBA from Harvard University. She has held leadership positions in private, public and non-profit sectors as Vice President of Finance for Intrepid Corporation, an entrepreneur who co-founded Manhattan Intelligence, Director of European Operations for Trek Bicycle, and Wisconsin’s Secretary of Commerce.

LEADERSHIP PORTAGE COUNTY

Enjoy this letter from some of our 2015-2016 LPC Participants, reflecting on October’s LPC session: Written by Brittany Melby and Autumn Moore On Thursday, October 15th, the Leadership Portage County group met at the Portage County Library. It was a fun-filled day as the group of emerging leaders learned about different negotiation styles to incorporate into their current leadership tool belt. The group also enjoyed hearing from local government leaders including Dan Mahoney, Mayor Mike Wiza, O. Philip Idsvoog, Jeff Schuler, Jeanne Dodge, Paula Cummings, Michael Pagel, and Senator Julie Lassa. The group was extremely thankful for the wisdom and insight shared through the roundtable discussions with local officials. The Leadership Portage County program is one that offers valuable experiences that is unmatched by other leadership programs. If you haven’t heard of this program before, feel free to contact us or visit our website. We are already looking forward to next month’s session!
