In 2002, Jeremie graduated from North Central Technical College with a computer networking and programming degree. In 2013, Jeremie worked his way up to become the president of the organization. As president of the company, he directly oversees financing, accounting, contract negotiations, government relations, strategic planning, and technology development. Executive Director’s Report - Everybody
is
Hiring
Whether you are driving on the Interstate or through the neighborhoods of our community, you see “Now Hiring” signs. The businesses range from retail to construction to software development to education. It seems like no sector is untouched. The New ERA (Employee Retention & Attraction) workshop on Feb. 11 brought together a group of passionate, like-minded individuals working towards economic vitality through a fourhour workshop facilitated by Newaukee. Our labor shed, those available and willing to work, is going to be challenged. The projections are that we will fall thousands short of filling all of the available jobs in the next nine years. Whose responsibility is it to solve the challenge? Some will argue it is up to the municipalities in our community. Our municipalities were well represented at the New ERA (Employee Retention & Attraction) event however our county, city, villages and towns cannot do it alone. They have begun integrating the raw data and follow-up work into their own strategic plans ,however. that is just the first step. Some will argue it is up to the over 100 people at the New ERA Workshop. While those positively-charged people will make a difference in developing strategic action plans, they cannot do it alone. Some will argue it is up to NEWaukee. While they did an exceptional job facilitating the New ERA group, it is not their community. It is worth checking out their website (www.newaukee.com) and the work they are doing throughout the state with young professional groups (www.ypweek.com). We can certainly “copy and steal” what has worked. Some will argue it is up to Ignite, the young professional group for our community. After all, isn’t this worker shortage going to be an issue for the millennial generation anyway? Ignite will be important to our efforts and was well-represented at New ERA, however, they cannot do it alone. Some will argue it is up to the businesses and organizations in our community. Finding workers is their problem, isn’t it? The businesses and organizations in our community have already begun addressing the challenge and have partnered with education to assist in moving the needle. Your Portage County Business Council (PCBC) has been engaged with this effort. Businesses and organizations can’t do it alone, though. Each of us needs to take personal responsibility to solve the challenge. After all, it is OUR community. Get involved with local municipal government. Talk to someone who attended New ERA and ask how to get engaged. Check out the exciting projects NEWaukee has developed and work to implement them here. Get involved with YP Week, happening April 23rd - 30th—there are numerous events in our backyard. Help your business and/or organization make a difference and team up with our schools, MSTC and UWSP. And speaking of UWSP, there are thousands of prospective employees attending there from outside our three-county region. The current students are a great resource. PCBC is working on making connections. Experiences not events. Action not activity. Solutions not silos.

Danielle McFadden President and CEO at Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce
Are Chambers of Commerce Still Relevant?
It’s hard for me to believe that in June, I’ll have worked for the Greater Lowell Chamber for 5 years. The past 5 years have been extremely good to me... I bought a house, got married, had Zoe and have another one on the way any day now. Not everyone knows this, but prior to getting the job at the Chamber, I was an active member for several years. I started out by attending events, then I joined the Community Service Committee and shortly thereafter I became a board member - eventually landing the role as co-chair of the board.
When I stepped down from the board to apply for the job as President I was taking a risk. I was 28 years old at the time and believed in the Chamber so much that I was willing to put myself in a vulnerable position leaving a role that I enjoyed to hopefully land a role that I knew I would love. 8
THE ACTIVE VOICE \\ PORTAGE COUNTY BUSINESS COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
This was a very public move and the risk of not getting the job was great since I was young and lacked experience. Luckily for me, the board was willing to take the chance on me. This is something that I am grateful for everyday. There’s nothing like waking up and going to a job that I truly love. Why am I sharing this story? Because after all these years of being a member and then an employee of the Chamber, I believe in what we do more now than ever. While Chambers of Commerce have certainly changed throughout the years, our relevance is as strong as ever because we truly make a difference in the fate of small businesses and organizations. When a business joins the Chamber, they are backed by a team that not only cares about their success, but also has the resources available to help them grow, network, connect and succeed. NEXT PAGE..........
True, every Chamber is different. We are housed in different communities and have developed different personalities and cultures. Our benefits may vary. The resources and partners that we have are not the same. But our foundation and our passion for helping our members links us together in a unique way that only someone who truly stands behind the concept of a Chamber of Commerce will completely understand.
for me and it’s led to so many opportunities and so many amazing (lasting) relationships
If you’ve ever asked yourself... • Is a Chamber of Commerce still relevant? • Why should I bother joining my local Chamber? • What is the Chamber actually doing for me? Consider this: Each Chamber is relevant in it’s own unique way because we work hard to stay connected in the community, offer new and innovative benefits and to be a strong resource for our members and community as a whole. When you join your local Chamber you are showing the community that you value being a part of it. When you support the community, the community will support you. The Chamber is always working hard behind the scenes to ensure that we are the best possible resource for our members. This includes planning networking events, education seminars, connecting with local and state officials, promoting and marketing the local economy and fostering relationships with new and existing business resource partners that can offer our members what we may lack. And this is why I love my job. I believe in what a Chamber of Commerce can do for it’s members, because I’ve been a member and I saw what it did for me. Joining the Chamber was a game changer

New ERA
p
On February 11th, the New ERA Workshop was held in Stevens Point. NEWaukee was requested by the Portage County Business Council and the Arts Alliance of Portage County to help facilitate the workshop . The steering committee for the workshop also included Portage County government, the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, UW-Stevens Point, and Mid-State Technical College. The event was funded by Portage County government and the Portage County Business Council. Over 100 community members showed up to reimagine the place they call home. The purpose of the workshop was employee retention and attraction. Todd Kuckkahn, Executive Director of Portage County Business Council, Inc. commented, “If we are going to attract millennials and retain other generations in the workforce, we need to be strategic and focus on experiences, action and solutions rather than events, activity and silos. In other words, the community, however you define that, needs to work together in a different and collaborative way.” The workshop had a panel of millennials for a question and answer session. Finding out what millennials are looking for is crucial to keeping them in the community. After the panel, workshop attendees wrote ideas and actions on walls of paper. These raw wall ideas are the first steps to develop the beginning of action plans for our community. What’s next for New ERA? After the raw data is condensed, the information will be shared with the community. Attendees are encouraged to share and activate these ideas!

Introducing Kayla Rombalski as the NEW Director of Talent Development!
The Portage County Business Council (PCBC) & Foundation (PCBCF) announces the hiring of Kayla Rombalski as the Director of Talent Development. This position provides leadership for the Partners In Education (PIE), Leadership Portage County (LPC) and general talent and workforce development initiatives. The Director collaborates with business, education, government and the community to enhance employee retention and attraction programs. “Kayla brings a wealth of experience from her past positions with United Way of Portage County and the American Red Cross,” according to PCBC Executive Director, Todd Kuckkahn. “Kayla also has a wealth of community leadership with Ignite (Young Professionals) and the Portage County Cultural Festival. Her United Way staff and volunteer experience was a tremendous proving ground for working with volunteers across our community and leading efforts for positive change. The fact Kayla is a UW-Stevens Point graduate is another bonus.”
I am a junior at UW- Stevens Point majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in management. Along with academics, I enjoy being a student ambassador for the admissions office on campus giving tours and mentoring incoming freshman and transfer students.
Rombalski most recently served as the Director of United Way’s Volunteer Center and was responsible for Volunteer Center operations, including the planning, promotion, and facilitation of two large projects – Project Fresh Start and Make A Difference Day, involving more than 1,300 direct service recipients, management of more than 1,200 volunteers annually, and relationships with more than 100 businesses. She also oversaw United Way’s 2-1-1 operations in Portage County, promoting and gaining awareness for the program. Prior to that, Rombalski served as Regional Director of Volunteer Services, and Director of Communication & Volunteers for the American Red Cross of North Central WI serving the Wausau and Stevens Point regions. Rombalski shared, “I came to Stevens Point for my education (UWSP), and stayed beyond my university years because I grew to love the community. The opportunity to serve as the Director of Talent Development allows me to focus on what makes Portage County great: its people – business leaders; community members; and students, our future business and community leaders.”
educate them on the great opportunities the county holds for their futures. Also, I enjoy learning how to design important events for high schools and middle schools throughout the community that are vital to employee retention and hopefully these events will inspire a future career.
I look forward to learning about the community through my internship at PCBC and educating my fellow classmates as well. I have learned that not many students on campus know what Portage County has to offer, and I want to work with the PCBC team to

PORTAGE COUNTY GIFT CERTIFICATES
Board Advisors Sara Brish - Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau Volker Gaul - Mid-State Technical College Dan Mahoney - Village of Plover Michael Ostrowski - City of Stevens Point
Purchasing Portage County gift certificates continues to be a successful way to “Buy Local”. Portage County gift certificates make great gifts. Gift certificates can be purchased at area banks, credit unions, the Convention and Visitors Bureau or at our office. They can be used at any business with a Portage County address and are available in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $25, $50 & $100. The PCBC would like to thank everyone who participates for helping make the program successful. We would also like to thank BMO Harris Bank for their financial support of the gift certificate program.
