MISSION
Annual Report
2011-2012
Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, coeducational, independent, college-preparatory day school with a diverse student body. We acknowledge the sovereignty of God, recognize the worth of the individual, and seek to cultivate a school community that endows its citizens with a foundation of moral and ethical character and intellect. Porter-Gaud fosters a challenging academic environment that honors excellence in teaching and learning, respects differences, expects honesty, and applauds achievement. The school strives to create an environment that nurtures and protects what we value most in our children: their FAITH, their CURIOSITY, their TALENTS, their INTEGRITY, their HUMANITY, and their DREAMS.

Dear Porter-Gaud Family, It is amazing to think of the breadth and depth of the programs at this school that our generous donors support. Our academic program spans twelve grades and numerous subject areas. In addition to the core courses in math, science, English, history, and languages, in recent years we have also expanded computer science offerings and added electives within the core subjects. Fine arts and athletics provide numerous opportunities for extracurricular involvement. In addition, we hope to instill in our students the values of integrity, honor, and concern for others – supported by our service, religious and character education initiatives. We need these extensive programs to fulfill our larger mission in helping our students find purpose. By offering a broad range of opportunities, we ensure that our students find their niche and discover their talents. I love to hear stories of students who have found a hidden talent for science or developed a passion for music. We want every student to find his and her place here. The generosity of the Porter-Gaud family helps to make our mission a reality. Our donors support these extensive programs and help to enhance each and every one of them by their partnership with the School. There is also the depth of time in this partnership. Some donors have an immediate impact in providing resources, while other supporters build long-term capacity for generations to come. We only have our students for a maximum of twelve years, but we have a lifetime of hopes and dreams for them. Thank you for helping to give them all the best possible foundation.

What an exciting time to be a part of Porter-Gaud! This past year has seen the creation of the Porter-Gaud Foundation and the selection of an outstanding Board of Directors and Executive Director to lead this new entity. Backed by our talented Foundation Staff, we have high hopes for this new 501(c)(3) created solely for the benefit of Porter-Gaud School. On behalf of this team, it is my pleasure to thank you for your past contributions to this school, which are detailed in the pages that follow, and to ask that you continue to make PorterGaud one of your top philanthropic priorities. The Foundation has been tasked with the oversight of all Porter-Gaud fundraising and serves as an umbrella and support structure for our affiliates, including the Parents Guild, the Fathers Association, and the Alumni Association. In addition, the Foundation manages the School’s endowment, working to insure its continued growth. We oversee the implementation of the School’s strategic vision in terms of its impact on facilities planning, construction, and funding. In the near future, we will also implement a formal Planned Giving program for Porter-Gaud, allowing those who wish to give through this vehicle the option to do so on their own terms. And finally, over the next several years we will seek to bring the School’s strategic plan to fruition by focusing on facilities upgrades as well as increasing the endowment, which currently stands at $11.5 million. Enhanced facilities and a larger endowment will benefit Porter-Gaud for generations to come. Undergirding all these initiatives is our 1867 Society, which raises money to support the School’s annual operations. I am proud to note that the annual giving represented in the report you have before you includes 100% participation by our faculty and staff – and even prouder to note that we have already reached that record again for the current year! Every single teacher and staff member at Porter-Gaud has contributed to the 1867 Society. Talk about leading by example! We would like to invite our parents to participate with equal enthusiasm in this important fund-raising effort. Many of you knew Charilla Barham, our long-time Assistant to the Head of School, who passed away this past September. There is hardly a student, faculty member, or Trustee who wasn’t in some way touched by her kind attitude and quick wit. This “keeper of the candy” will be missed by all who knew her. We have created the Charilla Barham Scholarship Fund in memory of this wonderful woman. As you think about making a contribution to this year’s 1867 Society, please consider participating in this tribute to someone whose life truly epitomized the spirit of Porter-Gaud.

Executive Director, Porter-Gaud Foundation
Last year was a great year for the Porter-Gaud Foundation on several levels, the first being the official establishment of the Foundation and the recruitment of an outstanding board. We have an incredible group of leaders providing guidance, support, and ongoing evaluation and feedback. With the assistance of the Board, the Head of School, and the Porter-Gaud community, the Foundation raised $663,986 in annual giving and a total of $808,961. The capital focus in 2011-2012 was the muchneeded track renovation, for which the Foundation raised $55,000. The state-of-the-art track surface was dedicated on February 15, 2012 and played host to our State Championship Track Meet, which the Cyclones won in dominating fashion. In addition to a great year of philanthropy for Porter-Gaud, we also had a tremendous amount of investment from our affiliate groups. The alumni class agent program continues to grow, and we were excited to have record attendance at Reunion Weekend. Porter-Gaud alumni continue to come back and support the School through our career panel, homecoming, athletic events, B2B, and much more. We are also thrilled and proud to announce that 100% of the Alumni Association Board contributed to Porter-Gaud this past year. A big hand to the PGAA for 100% participation, and for another successful golf tournament on Kiawah Island to raise funds for the Alumni Scholarship. The tournament raised more than $15,000, and the PGAA gave $16,000 in scholarship funding. The Porter Military Academy (PMA) Alumni celebrated their 24th annual reunion this past year and are looking ahead to their big 25th reunion in April. The PMA Alumni Association continues to do great work to foster the knowledge and history of PMA. The Porter-Gaud Parents Guild (PGPG) is an incredible force and invested countless hours this past year. The bi-annual gala was held last spring and was very well attended and enjoyed. The gala raised $125,976 for a wide variety of wish list items including a large teacher wish list, an auditorium projector, an athletic wish list, the 1867 Society, a visiting writer, faculty grants, and much more. Let me extend a very large thank you to the PGPG for all of their efforts and investments in the school, students, faculty, and staff. The Porter-Gaud Fathers Association (PGFA) provides tremendous support. This Association continues to draw incredible crowds to their annual shrimp boil in the fall and Oyster Roast in the winter. The sponsorships for their sports program have grown year over year and they continue to have amazing leadership, which pushes for continued growth and involvement from the Porter-Gaud community. A very large thank you to the PGFA for all that they have done and continue to do. There can be no doubt that 2011-12 was a fantastic year in philanthropy for Porter-Gaud. We are excited about our past, present, and future. Thank you for all that you do to invest in Porter-Gaud, and here’s to an incredible new year.

FAITH
REVEREND BRIAN MCGREEVY ’74, Chaplain As an Episcopal school, Porter-Gaud believes that education must focus on the whole student--mind, body, and spirit. Episcopal schools have a long and rich heritage of academic excellence. They share two fundamental characteristics that make them different from public schools and from many other private schools. First, they affirm the value of the spiritual dimension of learning – integrating faith and reason – and second, they are grounded in academic excellence. Episcopal schools combine rigorous and free intellectual inquiry with an unapologetic proclamation of faith in a loving God. Emerging from this worldview is love for our students, for their value as children of God, and for their unique gifts. !This undergirds everything we do. !Because love is will, we act out of love, teach love, model love, and love one another in our community as God first loved us. Worship is one of the most universal and effective expressions of Episcopal identity and community life, and weekly chapel in all three divisions of the School is an important manifestation of faith in our community. A parallel Jewish Life program in Middle and Upper School enriches our understanding of one another as people of faith. The Vestry, a student organization that dates back to the time of the Reverend Dr. Porter, works with the chaplains to offer a wide variety of programs for students who wish to delve deeper into the Christian faith in Middle and Upper School. Middle School Bible study, a voluntary gathering on Thursdays at lunch, regularly brings together some 100 students for a quick bite of pizza followed by discussion and teaching from the Scriptures. Upper School Bible study, a voluntary gathering at lunch on Mondays, also attracts 80 to 100 students for pizza, singing, and a Scripture lesson either in small groups or from a student leader or the Chaplain. Over 70 Upper School students also meet in small discipleship groups each week, and students can often be found praying together or with one of the chaplains at St. Timothy's Chapel. Some 50 students recently participated in the Diocesan Encounter Retreat held at Camp St. Christopher. ! The School’s motto as found on the crest--Fides, Honor, Scientia--reminds us that faith, honor, and knowledge are the three pillars of what it means to be a Porter-Gaud student.

CURIOSITY
DOUG BERGMAN, Computer Science | PHIL ZAUBI, Director of Technology Porter-Gaud embraces Computer Science as one of the fundamental building blocks of the educational experience. Students start to learn the concepts of Computer Science as early as the 3rd and 4th grades and continue through their senior year. While most lower schools are teaching their students to type, our students are programming their own games and robots. Few middle schools in the country expose their students to true Computer Science through the entire middle school experience, yet our students are creating and programming interactive 3D worlds. And while most schools in the United States struggle to offer even one real Computer Science course, Porter-Gaud offers an entire four-year program. In the Upper School, we have earned national recognition for our curriculum and have presented nationally and internationally about the successes of our students.!The digital landscape is changing rapidly. We prepare our students for a world where the tools they will use have not yet been created, and the problems they will solve have not yet been defined. So, how then do we prepare students to be successful? We spend four years giving students a genuine experience creating, designing, programming, and reprogramming technology to do what they want it to. They learn that it is okay to begin writing a program without knowing exactly what the finished product will be. We encourage them to think about solving problems by using technology to create new tools, new programs, new devices, and new solutions. Projects are open-ended and self-chosen, and span many weeks. Through a context-based approach, we allow students to immerse themselves in technology in the same ways that they experience the world outside of Porter-Gaud. As we look towards the future, we see tremendous opportunity to continue innovating.!Through our curriculum, we work our way from the traditional to the new. We move from the keyboard/mouse input model to touch or gesture-based input used in the newest devices. We look beyond current devices and experiment with mind-controlled devices using brain wave sensors; humanoid robots with more than 100 programmable sensors and motors; 3D holographic video conference calls with industry leaders and we! figure out how to harness and embrace the 24/7/365 connectivity and energy that social media provides. The future technology classroom will look very different. Labs without tables and chairs will allow for exploration of technologies in collaboration with peers using ultra-portable devices. We look forward to writable walls that are full of code written by students and teachers, and rooms where students can collaboratively project the screen of their mobile devices on the projector. More than these, we look forward to the future technologies our students will create to push the envelope of technology around the world.

TALENTS
NICK LACASSE, Director of Fine Arts Over the past ten years, there have been numerous changes and steady growth as we work to strengthen the fine arts curriculum. We continue to expand course offerings, enhance classrooms with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, and utilize professional development opportunities to provide a twenty-first century education for every Porter-Gaud student. With the help and generosity of the Porter-Gaud Parents Guild, we recently purchased new lighting and sound for Gwynette Auditorium, enhancing our technical abilities and giving our students the resources to produce even more stunning performances. We recently updated audio recording and video editing software and hardware, which has transformed our recording studio into a powerful workstation. Our music students now have the unique opportunity to produce music videos, documentaries, and short films. They can choose to compose music, analyze numerous styles and genres of music, and learn to appreciate music of many cultures. Our visual arts students participate in drawing, painting, ceramics, metal, printmaking, sculpture, and computer graphics, while learning to appreciate various art forms and histories. In addition, we have a flourishing performing arts program. All three divisions offer choir, select vocal ensembles, and musical productions. The Upper School students may also participate in Jazz Ensemble and Handbells. The professional quality of our musicals and dramatic productions has received the highest of praise throughout the Charleston community. Our fabulous 2012 spring production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast took all of us back to our childhood! The cast and crew brought the musical to life with their superb talents and abilities!

INTEGRITY ANNE FRAZIER, Upper School Counselor Teaching personal integrity is an integral part of the Porter-Gaud mission. Our students learn that a respectful community begins with personal accountability. Through our Honor Program and our Character Education curriculum, integrity is taught in the classroom. These efforts seek to nurture and educate the whole child. The Honor Program and Character Education curriculum exist in all three divisions. In the Lower School, the Virtues Project focuses on specific virtues such as respect, cooperation, friendliness, thankfulness, patience, responsibility, honesty, excellence, forgiveness, and unity. Each virtue is introduced in a monthly assembly, which often includes guest speakers who model these characteristics in their daily lives. The teachers then take these virtues into their classrooms, reinforcing them through activities. The Middle School follows a similar model of introducing monthly virtues in Chapel, then following up with them in the classroom and on the playing field. Virtues are discussed and practiced in different aspects of Middle School life. The Middle School has an Honor Council Club who meets to discuss issues surrounding Honor and character development. Honor Council Club is composed of two sixth graders, three seventh graders and six eighth graders, chosen by the faculty and current members of the honor council.! They are given the task of promoting honor in the MS, and do so with poster contests, video contests, homeroom advisories and assemblies. They discuss issues such as what constitutes cheating, and the importance of being honest with teachers and peers. In Upper School, students take the lead, helping each other develop a personal sense of Honor. The Upper School Honor Council is comprised of elected students from each grade, including a Senior Honor Council President, and is supported by two Upper School faculty sponsors. The Council is driven by the School’s mission to instill integrity and accountability in all our students, and serves as a guide if students stray from the expected path. Porter-Gaud expects all students to commit wholeheartedly to the Honor Code Pledge: “As a student of Porter-Gaud, I will not lie cheat or steal.” Violations of this pledge are taken seriously and addressed on an individual basis by the Honor Council. W.A.T.C.H. (Words, Actions, Thoughts, Character and Habits) is at the heart of Porter-Gaud’s Honor and Character Education Programs and is seen and heard in all areas of school life. The acronym was developed by Rev. Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter and is full of historical and traditional meaning at Porter-Gaud. W.A.T.C.H. reminds students to be mindful of their words and actions, as they eventually become our way of thinking and living. This mindset permeates everything we do and helps foster and preserve integrity in our students and community beyond the walls of Porter-Gaud.

HUMANITY AARON LIPKA, Latin Teacher
In the World Languages Department, Porter-Gaud students look beyond the barriers of language and explore our core ideal of Humanity within the classroom and beyond. Our department upholds the belief that the human experience finds its roots in language and communication, and guides students to express themselves as individuals and to identify with the members of other cultures. Upper School Spanish students hone their conversational skills in a second language, while simultaneously investigating the cultures and experiences across the Hispanic-speaking world. Meanwhile, students in Upper School Latin classes reflect upon authors such as Vergil and Cicero to discover how the Romans have influenced modern politics, literature, and the English language. French students are given the opportunity to speak in a language of high cultural and artistic value, and Lower School students receive instruction in both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. New course offerings are added every year. The World Languages faculty maintain that the Humanity of a Porter-Gaud student resides in his ability to understand effectively, communicate fluently, and remain alert to the unique experiences of other societies. After building a firm basis for speaking skills beginning in the Lower School, Middle School students strengthen their reading abilities and increase their awareness of world cultures. By Upper School, Porter-Gaud students have much of the world at their fingertips—just ask the Spanish students after they spend Spring Break 2013 in Spain! Graduates of our program enter the world beyond Porter-Gaud with minds open towards a variety of global cultures, principles, and experiences that share a common foundation in our Humanity.

DREAMS
BRINK NORTON, Director of Communications Our students come to us with a wide variety of hopes and dreams. At a young age, our Lower School students imagine what their futures will look like. They draw images of their vision for the world. They write about what profession they may enter one day. They are filled with the promise of amazing times ahead. Our job is to transform their dreams into their realities. We are blessed to cover stories from all around our beautiful campus, and have the unique opportunity to see stories years in the making. It is fun to watch students as they grow in knowledge and maturity, moving across the three divisions. We are in a period of rapid shift in the way students learn, and in the resources available to them. We hear a great deal about Twenty-First Century Learning, but most do not truly understand what that means. It is fascinating to think that the visions reserved for our wildest dreams when we were in school are now commonplace in the lives of our students. They have unfathomable information at their fingertips. Porter-Gaud students have grown up in a world of constant interaction with information, and it has changed the way they learn, and in turn, the way we teach. Porter-Gaud is driven to stay ahead of the curve, preparing students to meet the demands of a story not yet written. We do not know the amazing things that will make up our future and where technology and innovation will lead. We teach our students a love of learning and a passion for innovation, and we give them the skills to make their dreams happen. We now engage them as active participants in the learning process, not just casual observers. To survive the rigors of an ever-evolving world, we challenge our students in a meaningful way. We expect them to take command of their lives intellectually, spiritually, physically, artistically, and intrinsically. In our interaction with alumni, we have the privilege of seeing stories at every chapter of life. They all do amazing and meaningful work in a wide gamut of areas. This does not happen by mistake. There is a common thread. They built an unshakeable foundation at Porter-Gaud which has served them well. Porter-Gaud has thousands of fulfilled dreams to its credit, dreams that transform lives: leadership in the world; innovation in the marketplace; life-long relationships with classmates.. Our alumni include professional musicians like Ben Hutto ’64, Seth Gilliard ’08, and Matt Shingledecker ’04, who have followed their dreams to amazing careers. Writers like Katie Crouch ’91, who has written multiple New York Times Best Sellers. DuBose Egleston ’93 had a dream as a senior to one day lead PorterGaud. These are just a few examples in an extensive list. This is a fascinating place with a rich history unlike any other in Charleston. We have a foundation built on 146 years of excellence, yet we are merely a glimpse of what we hope to become. You see, Porter-Gaud has dreams too. Mission: An Annual Report ! page 21

Restricted Endowment Funds
Porter-Gaud is fortunate enough to have donors, past and present, who are committed to giving to endowment. Named endowment funds are vital to sustaining the fiscal health of Porter-Gaud School. These funds are established through outright gifts of stock and cash, or through bequests and other estate planning vehicles. Each fund leaves a meaningful legacy to Porter-Gaud School. These funds are typically used to endow scholarships, teaching positions, or other programs and expenses as stipulated by the donor. The endowment is managed by hired investment consultants. The Alison Fitzgerald ’97 Memorial Fund was established in 1995 by a gift from her parents, Eva and Dick Fitzgerald, to perpetually support the Alison Fitzgerald Handbell Choir and the Alison Fitzgerald Award. The award is presented annually to a sophomore who shares Alison’s enthusiastic outlook on life. The Barrett Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew T. Heart and Soul Charilla Barham served Porter-Gaud as the Assistant to the Head of School for many years. Her infectious smile, quick wit, and obvious love for Porter-Gaud affected everyone who met her. To honor her memory, we are raising money to endow a scholarship in Charilla’s name. To date, 100% of the current faculty and staff at Porter-Gaud have contributed to the Fund, which is a testament to how much she was loved. To contribute to the Charilla Barham Scholarship Fund, please contact Louise Lawton at the Porter-Gaud Foundation. (843)402-4686 or llawton@portergaud.edu.

Mission: An Annual Report ! page 47
To the Porter-Gaud Community, We want to thank our parents, administrators, teachers, staff, and Board members for your support of the Parents Guild during the 2011-2012 school year. The mission of the Parents Guild is to assist the Board of Trustees, Administration and Faculty, in creating the best possible educational experience for our children. We also strive to promote a close relationship and clear understanding between the School and our families. None of our goals can be accomplished without the commitment and dedication shown by each of you. Our major fundraising efforts this year—Halloween Carnival, Holiday Market, Santa's Stage, Chaps ‘n Chilis Fiesta & Auction, Book Exchange, and the Wendell Center Concessions—were very successful. Thanks to your hard work and generosity, the Parents Guild donated just over $125,000 to the School this year. We would especially like to recognize the committee and sponsors of the Chaps ‘n Chilis Fiesta & Auction. We deeply appreciate your support of this important fundraiser for our school. The auction raised more than $120,000 in net proceeds, and these funds will be disbursed over a two-year period. All money raised by the Parents Guild is appropriated to the School through Teacher and Athletic Wish Lists, Faculty Grants, and Visiting Writers. A detailed accounting of our major projects and the Wish List is available on the Parents Guild page of the Porter-Gaud website. The Parents Guild also worked to build our community through various special events throughout the year. Your presence at these functions truly makes a difference and helps to make Porter-Gaud a special place. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve as Co-Presidents of the Parents Guild. Gratefully, Margaret Allen and Traci Ellis Co-Presidents Porter-Gaud Parents Guild
