Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, coeducational, independent, college-preparatory day school with a diverse student body. We acknowledge the sovereignty of God, recognize the worth of the individual, and seek to cultivate a school community that endows its citizens with a foundation of moral and ethical character and intellect. Porter-Gaud fosters a challenging academic environment that honors excellence in teaching and learning, respects differences, expects honesty, and applauds achievement. The school strives to create an environment that nurtures and protects what we value most in our children: their FAITH, their CURIOSITY, their TALENTS, their INTEGRITY, their HUMANITY, and their DREAMS.

Dear Porter-Gaud Family, The 2013-2014 academic year was one of resounding success. It is a privilege to see how you, our supporters, demonstrate your commitment to the vision and direction of our remarkable school. It is your credence in Porter-Gaud that allows us to continue to grow and advance in response to the needs of our students and faculty. Throughout this publication, you will find stories from alumni, students, faculty, and staff that reflect the WATCH words that a Porter-Gaud student embodies: Compassion, Honor, Perseverance, Respect and Responsibility. Each of these character traits serves as a guiding principle for not only our students, but also for our faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees. Over the past thirty-plus years, I have experienced Porter-Gaud as a student, an alumnus, the Director of Technology, the Assistant Head for Finance and Operations, the Head of School, and most importantly as a parent. I have found that each role has been enlightening as they have allowed me to see the School through different perspectives. I have seen first-hand the extraordinary community of teachers, parents, coaches, staff and administration who see things in our children that the students have yet to see in themselves. I am passionate about leading our community forward through another successful year. I am proud to present this Annual Report to the Porter-Gaud Family as not only evidence of a remarkable year, but as a reflection of the strength of the School and the Cyclone spirit. I am grateful to each of you for the exemplary generosity you extended to Porter-Gaud in 2013-2014 and for your continued devotion to our great school, now and in the future.

D. DuBose Egleston, Jr. ‘93 Head of School

As we look back upon this past school year, one word comes to mind – “Excellence.” Though often overused and sometimes cliché, there is no better word to describe Porter-Gaud. Our students are taught, mentored, coached, advised and inspired by Excellence. They are surrounded by Excellence in the classroom, on the playing field, on stage and in chapel, and they are encouraged to pursue Excellence in all that they do. Our donors have also embraced Excellence, and because of your generous contributions to the Foundation and to our incredible affiliate groups, the Parents Guild, the Fathers Association and the Alumni Association, we are able to fund Excellence. Once again, we are proud to note that the annual giving represented in this report includes 100% participation by our Excellent faculty and staff – and even prouder to note that our faculty have already reached that record again for the current year! That means every single faculty member at Porter-Gaud has contributed to the 1867 Society, our annual fund! We would like to invite our parents, grandparents and alumni to participate with equal enthusiasm in this important fundraising effort. Our Planned Giving program is thriving and we encourage you to contact our Foundation staff for information about this exciting opportunity to shape the School’s future, a future that will include some of the most exciting years in Porter-Gaud’s history as we look to celebrate 150 years of educating and inspiring children in 2017. In this upcoming year, we look forward to focusing on reNEWal. We are entering into a historical moment for Porter-Gaud through our reNEWal campaign to provide new and expanded facilities to further enhance our already outstanding programming, all of which you will hear more about soon. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors and our staff, thank you for your generous gifts to Porter-Gaud, for supporting and encouraging our faculty and staff, and, most importantly, for allowing our children to continue their pursuit of Excellence!

HONOR

THE REVEREND BRIAN MCGREEVY ’74, Chaplain Ability without honor is useless.—Cicero Honor is one of the foundations of Porter-Gaud’s identity and mission. Emblazoned in the center of the School’s motto Fides, Honor, Scientia, honor is the linchpin that holds together every aspect of life at Porter-Gaud. Honor was a virtue prized by the ancient Greeks and was viewed as an essential component of what it means to be an educated person, being one’s best self in every context and competition. A matter of the heart and soul, honor helps define one’s approach to life and to one’s fellow human beings. At Porter-Gaud, one of the School’s proudest traditions is the student-run Honor Code, which is administered by the Student Honor Council. The Honor Pledge (“As a student of Porter-Gaud School, I pledge not to lie, cheat, or steal”) is woven into the fabric of life at the School. Students coming to Porter-Gaud from other schools are often amazed to see that there are not locks on lockers and that students can leave possessions out around campus without fear of someone taking them. The Honor Council strives to develop a student culture within which achievement is always based solely on one’s own work, and where it is nobler to honestly make a poor grade than to make a good grade in a dishonorable way. The students elected to the School Honor Council lead sessions on honor and the School’s expectations and tradition of honor for their peers across the School, ensuring that the students know that each individual is a key part of this aspect of what it means to be Porter-Gaud. Another important aspect of honor at Porter-Gaud derives from St. Paul’s admonition in the Epistle to the Romans to “honor one another above yourselves.” We want to honor each and every person in our School family as worthy of dignity and respect as a unique individual made in the image of God. We want to develop in our School family the ideal of servant leadership—that the best way to lead is to serve others in humility, looking out for the needs of others and not just our own needs. Part of our identity as an Episcopal school is to practice empathy on a daily basis, and learning to honor others above ourselves is an important way to encourage empathy. As Mark Twain said, “It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them.” In our School family, we seek to do what is right and honorable so that our focus is not in getting some sort of recognition, but rather the satisfaction of living with integrity; the vision that the Rev. Dr. Porter had for our School as we watch together in all things. The Voice: An Annual Report ›❯ page 13

PERSEVERANCE WILL CATHCART ’01, Journalist, The Daily Beast

Dear Porter-Gaud, You recently asked me to write a few graphs on perseverance. I tried… but then I gave up. You see there are all these clichés about perseverance that sound so wonderful after the fact: Pithy sayings that important-sounding adults quip to younger generations. Depending on your era, there are the standard quotes by various former leaders, like Winston Churchill’s “If you are going through hell, keep going.” Or Vince Lombardi’s ubiquitous, “It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.” Every generation has one. There is the entire movie Rudy or Michael Caine as Alfred telling Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, “Why do we fall sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.” My personal favorite is Thomas Jefferson’s darker—“When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.” Pretty much all of these easy-to-say truisms are derived from the Japanese proverb “Nanakorobi yaoki” which means something like, “Seven times down, eight times up.” But there is something disingenuous about “successful” (whatever that is) people telling young people that the key to life is simply standing back up for the fifth time after life has already knocked you down four times. First of all, the math is just wrong. In life, we start from the ground, crawling. We start out down. There is a reason we get up—we run, sprint, drive, fly and combust. And every single time we’re going to fall, trip, collapse and crash. Gravity always wins. It’s so very human. The point is to find a reason to take that leap, to find a passion for those few seconds before the crash—that is what perseverance is about. Life is short, and the only certainty is that there is an ending, at least to the one that we know. So sorry, Vince Lombardi, but it’s not about getting back up. This isn’t a Rocky flick. Anyone can stumble back up to his feet—that’s something else—that’s about a person’s survival instinct. But it takes a very special kind of fool to deliberately walk back up to the plate for another pounding. And maybe on that fifth time, you’ll get lucky: You’ll duck or jive. It doesn’t matter because there will be always be a harder fist, a bigger hammer or a faster bullet waiting for you on the other side. It’s not about standing back up. It’s about walking back into the unknown darkness, off the precipice and into the void. That’s what perseverance is. If you’re doing it out of “courage,” then you aren’t trying hard enough. If you are going to go through life getting knocked down, and trust me everyone does, then you might as well have fun along the way. You might as well go after something so immense, so great, that failure is a statistical given, but something of which the very idea makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. That is perseverance: a deliberate suspension not only of one’s disbelief, but also of what is thought to be possible. Perseverance is about imagination, a life that fills you with a childish wonder. Find something that means more to you than the consequences of failure—the pain of gravity’s influx—and you will persevere simply by trying. There is no destination or “success.” There are no “successful people.” There is only the final sprint. So start running. If you go fast enough—push yourself hard enough—you won’t feel the steps anymore. The pain will transcend to a sequence of breaths, of moments. You’ll begin to notice that the punches don’t hurt so much, or worse… or maybe better—that you like the pain. And the fear: The fear will remind you that you are still alive. It’s not about risk. It’s about finding something worth the risk. Then perseverance becomes just a side effect, a sensation, a word—as you push yourself further into the unknown. So embrace the pain. Relish those punches. Become a master of failure. But most of all keep a sense of humor. If you can’t see the comedy in your struggle, man, you are already doomed. In the end, it’s all about desire. The destination is meaningless. Perseverance is about imagination. It’s about finding a journey toward something so daunting—a risk so great, so terrifying and thrilling that the destination will become arbitrary, and you will simply hope that these moments will never end. So get on with it.

RESPONSIBILITY BRINK NORTON, Director of Communications & Digital Media

Voltaire once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Arguably, there is no higher position of power than an educator. It is not power in the sense of control or might, but the power of influence. Teachers have the opportunity to influence a person for the rest of their life. Having a student’s future in your care is a daunting task, and not for the faint of heart. Each day, a committed group of faculty walks into Porter-Gaud with this responsibility ever-present in their minds. We have a collection of talent and skill among our teachers that is unparalleled in the Lowcountry, and their collective influence on the world through the students they teach is immeasurable, continuing for generations. Our goal is to empower our students through self-reliance. Our role is that of facilitator. We seek to equip them with the knowledge and skill they need to realize the potential God gave them and a work ethic that transforms that potential into reality. We push them beyond what they thought was possible. We challenge. We coax. We nurture. We mentor. We accept failure for the benefit it adds to the learning process. While failure may be uncomfortable, it is a much better teacher than success. We hope that our graduates will ultimately have unfettered access to the futures they have always wanted. Instilling a sense of responsibility for the world around them is part of the process. Our students cannot be merely consumers of the world. They have a responsibility to be contributors to the betterment of it. Service to the community is one of the largest components of the Porter-Gaud experience. It is in Porter-Gaud’s DNA. The Reverend Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter began the school nearly 150 years ago as a service to the Charleston community, reeling from the destruction of the Civil War. He understood service is essential to growth. His mission continues as our students help those in need in numerous ways each week. Service is not a requirement of our students, as we follow in Dr. Porter’s belief that those who willingly serve, do so for the right reasons. We hope they understand the responsibility that comes with the privilege of a Porter-Gaud education. We ask them to contribute spiritually, physically, and intellectually, not just financially. They cook breakfast for the homeless, take care of the animals at Pet Helpers, participate in Race for the Cure, make bouquets of flowers for the elderly and sick, and countless other projects. Last year, our Upper School students spent more than 3,800 hours serving our community. For the fifth year in a row, our entire senior class spent a day working on projects around Charleston during their Day of Caring. Voltaire was right – power and responsibility are mutually inclusive. They are linked. Corruption and greed happen when the link is broken. We work every day to ensure our students understand this. Their minds are powerful, but their generosity of spirit uses that power as a force for positive and meaningful change, so they, like our faculty, can affect lives for generations.

COMPASSION

GRACE ROBARDS, Class of 2015 Compassion within the Porter-Gaud community is omnipresent. It is the heart of the School—pumping and circulating warmth, love, and kindness throughout the collective body of students, teachers, and staff. The care that is shared for one another enriches the experience of life on and off of campus and unites the School in a powerful yet subtle way. When I reflect on my time at Porter-Gaud, I think first of the teachers; they epitomize compassion. Their dedication to teaching speaks volumes about their character. Similarly, their support, encouragement, and genuine interest in the lives and successes of the students go beyond the ordinary. It is very special to attend a school knowing how much each individual is cared for. The staff members here at Porter-Gaud are the glue to the community; though they often go unnoticed during hectic school days, their actions and decisions are based solely on what is best for the students and for Porter-Gaud. The desire maintained by all faculty and staff on campus to foster the development of young children into responsible and conscientious adults is incredibly selfless and admirable—to say the least. The students reciprocate compassion through leadership and service as well—striving for the common good of the community and helping others along the way. Giving time and effort to enrich the lives of other people cultivates the spirit of compassion that thrives in each division of the school community. Generosity and compassion linger and flourish in the hearts of all involved with Porter-Gaud. Frequently, parents and alumni donate to help support academics, athletics, faculty and student experiences, and even student enrichment opportunities. Dr. and Mrs. J.T. Richards established the Lieutenant James T. Richards ‘80 Memorial Award in 1990. Their son, Jamie, a Porter-Gaud graduate, was killed when the jet he was piloting crashed during a training exercise off of Parris Island. Every year, Dr. and Mrs. Richards provide financial support to a rising senior for a summer service experience. I had the privilege to receive this honor and spend two and a half weeks in the Sacred Valley of Peru. There, I worked on a clean water protection system that affected the lives of more than six hundred families. While not at our base in the village of Markuray, my group and I mountain biked, rafted on a branch of the Amazon River, visited Machu Picchu, and toured the cities of Lima, Cusco, Pisaq, and Ollantaytambo. Not a day goes by that I don’t reflect on the experience, the lessons I learned, or the friends that I made. The selflessness and kindheartedness of Dr. and Mrs. Richards continues to inspire me to live life compassionately by treating others with graciousness and respect. John Bunyan once said, “You have not lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” I can only thank the Richards for the profound knowledge and understanding I gained from my experience. It really is a gift to be able to call Porter-Gaud home. It is so incredibly special to be surrounded by individuals focused on improving themselves, but more driven to contribute—in whatever way that may be—to the betterment of others. To work in a place where the current and future well-being, character, and success of our children is the main priority is powerful. Each day I witness our incredible faculty mentoring and inspiring our students. It is for this reason that the Foundation exists, to support the efforts of our faculty, to empower our students, to discover within them what we all know exists. You make this possible through your support, and we are truly grateful. Because of you, The Porter-Gaud Foundation finished the year with the highest parent and alumni participation rate and greater support than any year in the history of the School. Thanks to the commitment from our parents, alumni, grandparents, past parents, affiliate groups, faculty, staff, and volunteers, a total of $961,778 was generously given to Porter-Gaud. In the 2013-2014 school year, our parent participation grew from 44% to 60%; alumni participation grew by 3%, and our past parent participation grew by 5%. Of course, our outstanding faculty continued to have 100% participation. We could not have done this without each of you. I would also like to thank our affiliate groups for their commitment of time, talent and treasure to Porter-Gaud. The $111,498 from the Parents Guild (PGPG) allows our upper school students to learn from MacBook Airs and the lower school to share their musical talents with Ukeleles. A big thank you also goes to the Fathers Association (PGFA) for funding $40,000 to athletics for additional exercise equipment for the Fitness Center as well as over 200 State Championship shirts for each of our student athletes. We are also grateful to our Alumni Association (PGAA) for raising over $13,000 in support of alumni scholarships. Our students, faculty, and staff benefit tremendously from all of your efforts and we are so very thankful. The pages of this report are filled with people who have contributed to the success of Porter-Gaud. I am honored to be a part of this family and look forward to another exciting year.

RESPECT

JIM BUXTON, Class of 1991, Member of the Board of Trustees Fides. Honor. Scientia. Erubesco. Faith. Honor. Knowledge. Respect. Respect in Latin literally means “to blush for.” It is an active verb, one that puts into motion the three pillars of a PorterGaud educational experience: Faith, Honor and Knowledge. With great optimism, I blush for Porter-Gaud. Each of Faith, Honor and Knowledge are personal pursuits, missions. Faith is a personal journey from the cradle to the grave. Honor is a personal standard trait that only you can consent to be taken away. Knowledge is an insatiable personal hunger to seek interactive understanding. Respect is the lifeblood that warmly flows among the three pillars and gives them abundant life. Respect is the natural bridge from your intellectual and moral foundation to the things that you admire, thereby affording you the ability to reach your highest calling in life. As one grows from a child to young adult at PorterGaud, the three pillars are nurtured in each student to a point where respect naturally blossoms from this special sense of foundational place. It has never been lost on me that the Faculty and Staff at Porter-Gaud work tirelessly to this end. But how does respect apply once we leave campus? I chuckled at this one-liner I heard in passing at Porter-Gaud graduation last year delivered by a doting, but stern grandparent: “Congratulations on graduation . . . from the easiest part of your life.” Life is unpredictable and complex, like one continuous obstacle course, but the lens through which we view it makes all the difference. Sometimes in life we Respect things that turn out to be ephemeral, and that blossom can lose its beauty. One often hears about “losing” or “gaining” respect, whether in the workplace, in relationships, in leaders or even on the playing fields. There can be gray winters in everyone’s life where we cannot seem to gain a foothold or garner respect (just ask Rodney Dangerfield), and there are ebullient summers where Faith, Honor, Knowledge and Respect pulse through our daily interactions. A practical example from this simpleton: at a particularly dark winter in my own life, not many years ago, respect was nowhere to be found. It was lost. This happens in life: what sometimes is a seemingly boundless warm blood flow can at times become chillingly restricted. Yet even in such darkness, there was one little light that shined in the form of an old song. It was All Things Bright and Beautiful, which Father Charles Furlow led in chapel, along with Gay Brabham playing piano, every two weeks when I was in Lower School. I bet you are humming it now. Do you feel that rush over you? That song learned as a child at Porter-Gaud was the buoy that pulled me back to a most certain foundation. Even when a blossom falls and respect is lost for something or someone (maybe even yourself), it is forever redeemed by a foundation strong instilled in every Porter-Gaud soul. The retreat need only be temporary, because very soon one realizes that unmitigated respect for Faith, Honor and Knowledge creates a very powerful thing in and of itself: a self-respectful, servant heart that firmly pulses with life-giving fulfillment of these mission pursuits. It is no wonder our primary school color is garnet. Be the lifeblood in your calling: Fides. Honor. Scientia. Erubesco. The Voice: An Annual Report ›❯ page 33

To the Porter-Gaud Community: The Parents Guild would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Parents, Faculty, Staff and Board Members for their time, dedication and support of our initiatives throughout the 2013-2014 school year. We are proud to report a very successful year in support of the school, through our services and our fundraising initiatives. The Parents Guild helped build and strengthen our community by completing the following service projects - Teacher and Maintenance Appreciation, Sunshine, Parent Receptions, Back to School Nights, Exam Treats, and Santa’s Stage. The Guild also donated over $111,000 back to the school through the completion of our major fundraising initiatives - Halloween Carnival, Holiday Market, Volleyball and Basketball Concessions, and our “Rock the Casbah” Spring Gala. A detailed listing of the donations to the Teacher, Faculty and Athletic Wish Lists, and Faculty Grants is posted on the Porter-Gaud website under the Parents Guild. We would especially like to recognize our “Rock the Casbah” Gala and Auction sponsors and committee members. Their generosity, selfless dedication and commitment to the Gala, achieved record attendance and raised $115,000 that will be disbursed back to the school over a two year period. The Parents Guild would like to encourage your participation in the 2014-2015 service and fundraising events to continue to build our community. You truly make a difference. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as the 2013-2014 Parents Guild President. Sincerely, Trudy Billings Past President Porter-Gaud Parents Guild
