WELCOME TO THE FIRST EDITION 2013!
GERMAN UPDATE If you read my “Editor Elke” message, you have seen that the German-Canadian Chamber of Commerce has shut their Vancouver Office down as of December 2012. In Vancouver, you still have the opportunity to read their newsletter: http:// kanada.ahk.de/en/media/current-newsletter/ or to look at their online list of members from Montreal & Toronto. Just for fun, I opened up a “German Business Society” page on Facebook, where I am the only member! Please join me there. https:// www.facebook.com/GermanBusinessSociety?bookmark_t=page
Editor Elke Now, I feel, is the right time to revive my “Westcoast German News”, so I can inform the German-speaking community on the Westcoast of Canada and Alberta about any changes since my last edition was published in October, 2010. Here are a few updates. The Canadian GermanChamber of Commerce has sadly closed their Vancouver office in December 2012! The Swiss are organizing “Swiss100Canada”, in 2013 to celebrate their centennial anniversary of relations between Switzerland & Western Canada. The Austrian “Johann Strauss Foundation” will be holding their 38th ball on February 2nd, 2013 in Edmonton, AB. Exciting news is that the European Festival has expanded to a two-day event on May 25th and 26th. Subscribe to my monthly news to learn more about these and other topics! Best regards, Elke
In Alberta, meanwhile, the University of Calgary was the venue for the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Elysee Treaty signed between France & Germany on January 22nd, 1963, which signalled a new era of constructive Franco-German relations, forming the basis for a United Europe. Consul general Sitz & his French colleage gave a combined radio interview in Vancouver. Mr. Hubertus Liebrecht, the Honorary Consul of Germany in Calgary, and his colleague Mr. Jean-Charles Bou, Consul General of the French Consulate both gave remarks. UBC will host a similar celebration on April 9th. Consul general Herrmann Sitz happy about this new picture of “Dirndl girls promoting soccer” now showing the way to the entrance of the German Consulate!
The Ambassadors of the EU from France & Germany with spouses
France & Germany are each other’s closest and most important political, economic and cultural partners. The Elysee Treaty, signed on January 22nd, 1963 by the French President, General de Gaulle, and the German Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, remains the cornerstone
of French-German cooperation, which is the main engine of the EU. (the 2 countries represent 33% of the EU population, 36% of the Budget, 37% of the GDP, 31% of the voting rights) May 9th, 1950, the Schuman Declaration became the founding act...
EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS Fraunhofer has more than 60 institutes and 21,000 employees across Germany, with extensive expertise in commercialization, industry partnerships and applied research. The partnership builds on the strengths of UBC’s Clean Energy Research Centre and UBC’s Campus as a Living Laboratory initiative, where researchers, students, operational staff and partners develop and demonstrate, at a city scale, sustainable solutions to the operational needs of communities. Today’s agreement follows UBC’s recent partnership with the Max Planck Society, another major German research organization.
UBC & Frauenhofer Vancouver - $4.9-million research partnership between the University of British Columbia and Germany’s Fraunhofer Society – Europe’s largest applied research institution – will advance clean energy research in five critical areas, from wind energy to zero emission vehicles. The international partnership builds upon the memorandum of understanding signed by UBC President Steven Toope during a trip by Canada’s top 15 universities to Germany in March. The three-year agreement will support collaboration on biomass-to-energy conversion, fuel-cell and hydrogen technologies, wind-turbine manufacturing, electrolysis and industrial aspects of solar-cell technology. “This partnership will allow both institutions to accelerate solutions for sustainability challenges facing the world,” said Prof. John Hepburn, UBC Vice President Research & International. “The partnership is also a key component of UBC’s International strategy to actively link with other global leaders to further knowledge discovery, development and demonstration that will benefit current and future generations.” UBC is the first Canadian partner chosen for Fraunhofer’s ICON program. While Fraunhofer research is typically funded by industry, under the ICON program the German institution will contribute $3.26 million to the project, with UBC providing the remainder in the form of basic and applied research. UBC’s principal investigator on the project is Prof. Walter Mérida, associate director at UBC’s Clean Energy Research Centre, leading a team of four senior engineering professors: John Grace (solar), David Wilkinson (electrolysis), Tony Bi (biomass) and Yusuf Altintas (wind).

Gluten Free or Glutenfrei According to the “Best Health Magazine”, 6% of Canadians have gluten sensitivity. And celiac disease affects one in 133 Canadians. There are some large organizations that help Canadians who suffer from gluten issues. One is a “Celiac Association” in Ontario. The other is the “Celiac Scene” in Victoria, BC. I also found information on the Coeliac Disease Website from the UK. Travellers from Switzerland, Austria & Germany that suffer from gluten, can look up local information to find hotels, restaurants, shops and specialty stores that offer gluten-free options here: http://www.coeliac.org.uk/gluten-free-diet-lifestyle/eating-out-and-travel/travel-and-holidays/travel-information-and-translations. The website called “Canadian Celiac Association” defines Celiac Disease as a “medical condition in which the absorptive surface of the small intestine is damaged by a substance called gluten. Common symptoms are anemia, chronic diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, cramps, bloating and irritability. They also share how important it is to be aware that today’s processed and packaged foods have many hidden sources of gluten, which can be unintentially ingested. The 3 main culprits are soups, luncheon meats and sausages.”
Information for Seniors There is a Nursing Home Pilot Project underway in Prince Edward Island for Senior Retirement Homes. Information packages and gluten-free diet options have been distributed to every nursing home in the province, including information for food service workers about how to service gluten-free food to residents. If the package proves to be a useful tool, the program can be expanded across Canada. Every year, nearly 30,000 people die of digestive disorders!
Information for Children Living or Travelling to Germany
The “Jugendausschuss” are there for young people between 10 and 28 years old. They offer courses, camps and events for children that need to live without gluten. They have been around since 1990. German Facebook Page: Jugendausschuss DZG https://www.facebook.com/JugendausschussDZG They even have a “Jugendherbergsfuehrer” available here: http://dzg-online.de/jugendherbergsfuehrerjuhe.714.0.html
16th ANNUAL EUROPEAN FESTIVAL 2013
Volunteers Needed! The German Table at the Festival needs at least 16 volunteers on Saturday & Sunday. Each pair will take on a 2-hour shift. Then, each country also needs people to collect tickets at the gates and to supervise the parking. Again, 16 volunteers are needed for that. We are also looking for a great band that is parepared to volunteer 20-minutes of their time, as well as 5-6 minutes, while a group of children demonstrate a polka. At this point, the Swiss will have a table, but the Austrians will not. If anyone wants to take on the Austrian table, they have to pay $400 asap.
Dancing at the Azerbaijan Community Centre in North Vancouver!
The European Festival will be a 2-day event on Saturday and Sunday, May 2526, 2013 for the first time. Due to the 2-day event there is a weekend package available this year. A regular 1-day ticket costs $10 at the door and $8 online. The weekend package costs $15 at the door and $14 online. The German Community, thanks to the generosity of Juergen Burckhardt, will also be represented at the Festival and has bought 100 tickets that will be given to volunteers, as well as customers of the Black Forest Deli at the Park Royal Mall in West Vancouver. A limited amount will be for sale. Doors will open both days at 11am and musical and dance performances will be equally split between both days. The Festival doors will close at 11pm on Saturday after the concert of a headliner band (which will be announced shortly) and on Sunday at 6pm. Please visit the all new website www.europeanfestival.ca for more information. The schedule and some Festival details are still under way so please check regularly. Individuals are welcome and encouraged to join and support the Eurofest BC Society with an annual membership fee of $25. In order to organize a Festival of this magnitude, the Eurofest BC Society is in need of in-kind and financial sponsorship. Any business (big or small) is encouraged to contact the event coordinator Marika Kovalcikova at marika@ marikaproductions.com, 7893 Cumberland St, Burnaby or give her a call at 604.618.6724. Information and sponsorship packages are also available on the website.

Around 50 people came together to share their culturally distinct food, take pictures and dance up a storm to a wide variety of European Music. Austria and Germany shared a table with European Wieners, Roggenbrot & authentic Wiener Schnitzel (shown).
EUROPEAN MOVERS & SHAKERS Unlike many organizations, Lift the Children wants sponsors to have a direct line of communication with the orphanages, their directors and the children. We make formal introductions and encourage both parties to get to know each other through e-mails and letters. We are also more than happy to assist in delivering anything that sponsors feel their orphange needs. In addition, information is available to all the sponsors as well as correspondence, reports and pictures of their personal orphanage. We want lasting relationsships to develop, so that sponsors can see their children grow and progress and eventually become responsible adults. We also encourage sponsors, if they are able, to visit Africa and their orphanages to have a truly lasting experience. Donations that are done monthly, in a lump-sum or for a specific project are welcome. Thanks!
The John Volken Story John Volken came to Canada in 1960 at the age of 18 and got his first job on a cauliflower farm. At age 71, he is still working, although officially retired. Volken is best recognized for winning Entrepreneur of the Year for Canada’s Pacific Region in 1995. This was for his success into changing the “United Buy & Sell Service” into “United Furniture Warehouse”, which grew into one of the largest retail furniture chains in North America. Volken was born in Potsdam, a city that became part of communist East Germany. His father was a medical doctor, who died near the end of the Second World War, when John was only 3 years old. In 2003, at the age of 62, John started to persue his new career as a social entrepreneur by establishing a the “The John Volken Foundation” with approximately $100 million of his profits. The main website is http://www.johnvolkenfoundation. org. Volken established two facilities, called “The WelcomeHome Program,” one in Seattle, Washington and one in Vancouver, BC. The Welcome Home facilities are long-term residential treatment facilities for men who are determined to overcome their drug or alcohol addition. The current websie is http:// www.whrecovery.org/ A second charitable organization, funded by the John Volken Foundation is “Lift the Children”, which supports destitute and needy orphanages in Africa. They can be found at http:// www.liftthechildren.org. John himself took a trip to Africa to search for the “poorest of the poor” and he found a way to help them. Volken does this because of his Christian beliefs and the verse from Mathew: “Inasmuch as you have done for the least of My brothers, you have done it unto Me.” Readers of Westcoast German News are encouraged to find out more information on the three websites or to get involved in the charities, if they feel that this is something they want to do.

SPORTS & LEISURE reprinted with permission http://bundesligafanatic.com/german-national-team-announces-u-s-tour-in-2013/ Great news for North American fans of the German National Team…..Joachim “Jogi” Löw‘s senior men’s national team will be playing two international friendlies in the U.S. in 2013 after the final matchday of the Bundesliga season (May 18th), including a match on June 2nd in Washington, DC against Jürgen Klinsmann’s United States Men’s National Team as US Soccer celebrates its 100th anniversary. The Germans will also play on May 29th, at an as of yet undetermined venue (either in New York City, Boston or Miami) against a yet unnamed opponent. Klinsmann and Löw Reunion The friendly matchup in Washington, DC will be a reunion for Löw and Klinsmann. Löw was an assistant from 2004-2006 to Klinsmann when the former striker coached the German national team, whose success culminated in a third-place finish atthe 2006 FIFA World Cup. The former assistant was named the German senior team head coach when Klinsmann resigned from the position in July, 2006. The announcement of the German national team friendlies played in the United States adds to an already highly anticipated schedule for Germany, which is scheduled to play France on February 6 and Brazil on August 14. The German side will also have two World Cup qualifying matches in March against Kazakhstan as well as WC qualifiers in September against Austria and the Faroe Islands in September and October qualifiers against Ireland and Sweden. There is also discussion of a friendly matches against England and/or Italy underway for the Germans. Klinsmann’s U.S. side will use the Germany friendly as a tuneup for World Cup qualifiers away in Jamaica on June 7 and at home against Panama four days later. Selection Dilemma and Familiar Faces The logistics of the US trip could see a makeshift roster for Löw. Although the Bundesliga season ends on the weekend of May 18, Real Madrid German internationals Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil will still be involved in domestic league play while Arsenal’s Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker, as well as Lazio’s Miroslav Klose, will unlikely be available for national team duty because of shutdown regulations. With the Champions League final scheduled for May 25 in London, as well as the DFB Pokal final scheduled for June 1 in Berlin, Low could possibly be missing a significant portion of his regular national team roster. Germany’s U-21s meanwhile will be preparing for the U-21 European Championship in Isreal mid June. Klinsmann’s national team roster includes players such as Steve Cherundolo, Jermaine Jones, Danny Williams, Fabian Johnson and Timothy Chandler, all of whom play for Bundesliga clubs, although the Americans will most likely see a German team missing many key players.

GREEN NEWS To most of us keen recyclers and Zero Waste advocates, the BC Recycling Regulation is a bit of a mystery. Perhaps I should not generalize, but until recently the Recycling Regulation did not influence or participate in my day to day life as CEO of Urban Impact Recycling. But in May of 2011, this changed. With one pen stroke government was to become part of my everyday business life. In May of 2011 the addition of “Schedule 5” to the Recycling Regulation transferred the responsibility for dealing with residentially produced Printed Paper & Packaging from local governments to the producers. With this pen stroke, another layer of bureaucracy and regulation was born in BC. Transferring responsibility for residential Printed Paper and Packaging has pushed producers together under one roof to discharge their obligations, although if they are so inclined they can deal with their material on their own. Coming together means and requires them to come up with a common Plan. In addition to the Plan, they must come up with performance indicators so that in future years the Plan, its diversion and performance can be evaluated and publicized. I fundamentally agree with the concept that a producer should come up with reasonable and real performance indicators. It is a great strategy to allow industry to set reasonable and real evaluation of themselves. Presumably this approach will create buy-in from the producers and force them to perform at a minimum level. I would, however, like to point out a problem with this approach. A “Plan” for diversion is an integrated system. In the case of Printed Paper and Packaging it will require the producers to understand a reverse supply chain. Producers (other than perhaps the Walmarts of the world) are not familiar with reverse supply chains; their talent is getting a product to market, not getting it out of the waste stream. Let me try to explain the issue with an analogy: It is like asking a commercial Truck Driver to do maintenance on his vehicle, when his specialty is operating a large vehicle, navigating city streets, and efficiently completing a route, all in a safe manner. In my example, I would argue that asking a Truck Driver to operate the vehicle and be a specialized mechanic for the vehicle is not a reasonable expectation, nor is it a sustainable formula for success. In the case of Printed Paper and Packaging, a well-established, integrated and efficient system exists in BC today. Why would producers want to re-invent the wheel and challenge what the real commercial market has already provided? Why should they be asked to become reverse supply chain specialists? Back to Performance Criteria, the Recycling Regulation Guide, produced by the BC Ministry of Environment, states a number of items that a plan must address: • Were stakeholders were consulted adequately? • Is the collection system accessible to the consumer? • What are the recovery rates?, how is the plan doing in diverting more waste? • Are consumers aware about the program?, do they know what to do with their product? • What is the cost of the system? • Have they successfully managed the environmental impacts of their program? • How will they resolve disputes in the system? In addition to the above, I also heard additional Performance Criteria presented at the Coast Waste Management Association conference in November 2012: • How are the products managed (“Life Cycle Management”)? • How does the Plan encourage alignment with the Pollution Prevention Hierarchy? The Ministry also requires producers to include specific Performance Indictors under each of the above categories. Selected indicators must be: • representative of performance • easily communicated and understood by stakeholders • based on accessible, reliable and accurate data that is verifiable by a third party • cost effective: the costs and collection effort associated with selected performance measures, should be proportionate to the informational value they provide • consistent over time and facilitate fair cross-program comparisons by using generally accepted measurement methodology Although I think that the Recycling Regulation Guide gives a good baseline and some good suggestions with respect to criteria and the rationale behind them, it unfortunately does not do a good job outlining or stating the consequences that it wants to avoid. In addition, the criteria do not include many important specifics such as measuring greenhouse gases and other environmental costs, or maintaining/bolstering the Green Economy and Jobs in BC. Jobs may not technically be the mandate of the Ministry of Environment, but I think a negative effect on jobs resulting from this program would not and should not be tolerated politically by the BC government.
