WELCOME A NOTE FROM US OUR MISSION Portland Film Festival is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to nurturing filmmakers and audiences, and celebrating the power of a good story. The Festival focuses on the people, ideas, technology, skills and artistry behind filmmaking and provides both entertaining and educational opportunities to the public.

Feel skin-crawling fear? These are just a few of the visceral powers of POV. Point of view - the eyes and ears through which we experience a visual narrative - is arguably the most important creative decision a screenwriter (a director too) makes when crafting a script. EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHARACTER & PLOT THURS, OCT 25 | 4:00pm This workshop, led by screenwriter David Arata (Spy Game, Children of Men), explores the vital and dynamic relationship
between character and plot. Participants will discuss how some film and TV inextricably entwines plot and character, as well as study films that are driven by situation instead of character for a glimpse into why some such films are so successful-- and others are not. Lastly, we’ll evaluate films and TV shows where the characters are richly drawn but do not dictate the plot. If we have willing volunteers, we’ll look at a few of the projects that members of audience are working on to assess where they fall in the above spectrum and discuss if that is the strongest choice for the piece.
