BY HENRY PAPER KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS (1963)

Here's a film, along with several other excellent re-releases "Man in the White Suit," "The Lavender HillMob," "The Ladykillers" that represents the cream of the classic British comedy crop. That Alec Guiness plays eight separate roles is only one of the many virtues in this totally absorbing and wickedly funny film. Ian Holm plays an unjustly spurned relative (his mother married an Italian for love) who, upon his mother's death in poverty, sets out to methodically murder each ofhisrelatives (all superbly played by Guiness) who together stand in the way of his inheriting the family wealth. Holm's pointed lack of scruple is perfectly balanced by his poetic sense of justice, as each of the unsympathetic heirs is murdered in the manner most appropriate to hisvocation (e.g. a photographer ina chemical explosion in his darkroom; a famous greedy hunter in a shooting "accident/' etc.). Containing an abundance of wit, humor and surprises, and superbly shot and directed, this film represents the very apogee of film entertainment. THEHITCHER

A nice young man is driving crosscountry and can't stay awake; he needs company, he needs someone to take the wheel. His first words (a little joke) when he opens the door to let the Hitcher in are, "My mother told me never to do this." Mother, it turns out, was never so right.

The Hitcher (all too convincingly played by Rutger Hauer, of "Blade Runner"dan "s0 ld· ler 0 f0 range " . IS an unstoppable homicidal maniac whose ironic desire to be stopped leads him on a brutal rampage ofslaughter along the highway. Following his initial escape, our hero comes upon his hitcher's victims at every turning, until he himself becomes the suspect as wellas intended victim.

Few filmsreally are the" experiments in terror" their ad copies claim but this one is. Masterfully directed and beautifully photographed, in a film where metaphor is more important than credibility, this is truly the stuff of nightmares. Although one ofthe best filmsof the past year, one would be well-advised to pick this one up with caution. (Rated R for disturbing violence).
