YOU FIND THEM on the beach, washedtipfromthegutsofthe oceaninbanksofseaweed.Last weekendIwasreadingandlookedover atjustsuchashoeonthebeach,asize 12bythelooksofit,workingitsway outofthesand,itssinglesteeltoepointing toward London-a high-top leatherfisherman’sshoe.Tongueless, thecowhidehadgoneblack.Iread anotherchapterandlookedoveratit.It wasstillthere,stuckintheelevatorof nothingtosay.

Turningitover,1sawthesole-rugged stuffthatlookedlikethebottomofa Firestonetire.Itsblack,rubbedoutseri¬ alnumberwasRC34-521NG,acallsign, probably,forthepeopletryingtoradio itbackhome.Thesolewasapetroleum byproductwithanestimatedlifespanof forever.

Itwasn'taMaineoutletkindofshoe. ApartfromtheArabicnumeralsithad nonationality;Itriedtoimaginethe owneroftheshoeandcameupwitha

pictureofsomebodyleaningoveralob¬ sterboatwhilehisfriendslaughed.He wasfoolingaround,holdingamackerel likeasubmachinegun.Thenthedeadly slip.

Inadditiontocomingupandgoingdown,thesungoes onrampagesofstormactivityincycles ofevery11years,and1990beginsone suchperiodofanespeciallyactivesun. Thepreludetothisyear'santicipated solardisplayswasa1989giantmagnetic solarstormthateruptedat8:52a.m.EST onMarch6th.Itwasthelargestknown solarflaresince198i.Anothersolarout¬ burstat1:30p.m.ESTtwodayslater causedskydisplaysvisibleasfarsouth asChicagoandupstateNewYork. Thisyearmayturnouttobearecord¬ breakingoneforsolaractivity.Thatcan meanunusuallysplendiddisplaysof NorthernLights.Butitcanalsomeanthe shut-downoflong-rangeradiocommuni¬ cation.disruptionofpowersystems (e.g.,computers),andevenchangein theorbitsofartificialsatellites.
