'Twoyearsago,whilevisitingherhus¬ band’sfamilyinNewJersey,Margaret sawanissueof Portland Magazine ina Barnes&Noblebookstorethere.She calledthemagazine’soffices,ordereda subscriptiontobesenttoherinDussel¬ dorf,andbeganfromthatmomenther plansforthegrandescapetoherdrcam homeandlife.“Readingthemagazine eachmonthgavemethefeelingthat1 knewwhereIwasmovingto(she’donk beentoPortlandononeoccasion,and thatforashorttime).Itgavemean insightastowhatwasavailablehere-the culturalacthitics,therestaurants,the housing—itmademeveryexcited aboutmakingthemove.”

Whilemosttownsandcitiescommis¬ sionedsculptorstocreatestatuessuchas Portland’s“Our1advofVictories,”Bovvdoin’sbuildingwasalmostasingle-hand¬ edbattlechargeledbyProfessorWilliam Smyth,classof1822,whosehomeon CollegeStreethadbeenanimportant stopontheundergroundrailroadfor slavesescapingtoCanada.

Sunthraised$20,000forconstruction andchosearchitectSamuelBackusof NewYorkCitv.1lealsoinsistedongran¬ ite.givenitsappropriatenessasamemor¬ ialanditsreflectionofthestvlcof Bowdoin’sUpjohnChapel.

Althoughonlythefoundationwasin placeatthetimeofSmvth’sdeathin 1868,hiszeallivedonthrough1870, resultingintheplacementofwallsand theroof.Itwasnotuntil1879thatbuild¬ ingresumed,thankstoagiftof$20,000 madebyValerieStoneofMaldenMass. brandsBassettofPortland,whohad designedBowdoin’sAdams1lall,was amongthearchitectsconsultedbefore workwasrestarted,butitwasBackus’s originalplanfortheexteriorthatwascar¬ riedthrough.Theresultwasa“Brench Gotliic"stylestructure,finallydedicated in1882,16vearsaftertheCivilWarend¬ ed,housingtwoclassrooms,alecture room,andameetinghalllargeenough fortheentirecollegebody.

Theaterdidn’tenterthepictureuntil muchlater,withthefounding,in1909, ofBowdoin’sMasqueandGownstudent dramagroup.Itwas.however,almost anotherhalfcenturvbeforethecompanv foundarealhome,theresultofalong campaignbyDramaProfessorGeorge Quinbvandthegenerositvofalumnus BroderickPickard,whosebequestledto theremodelingofMemorial1lallandits renamingasthePickardTheater,in 1955.

Now,nearkahalfcenturylater,yet anotherBowdoingraduate.Barn\\ish, hasinitiatedthecurrent$11.55million renovation,resultingintwotheaterswith¬ inMemorialHall,theWishTheaterand theall-newPickardTheater.Thebuild¬ ing’sdedicationisscheduledforBriday.
