Overherfamily’sobjections,theymar¬ riedinManhattanin1912andsetoutto leadabohemianlife,firstinGreenwich VillageandlaterinBrooklyn.Toget closetonature,theyspentsummersin thethecountryside,developing“wild picturesfromimagination.”

BothhadworksdisplayedattheArmory Showof1913,thelandmarkexhibition thatintroducedEuropeanmodernismto America,andtheyexhibitedinvarious galleriesduringtheseearlyyears.Evenas theirreputationsaschampionsofnew shiesgrew,however,theystruggledfinan¬ cially."W'ewereamongtheadvanced artistsofthattime,”Williamlater recalled,“andourpaintingseemedreally crazytothepublicandtothecritics.”

Eoraboutadecadetheyfoundinex¬ pensivesummerretreatsrangingfrom NewYorksuburbstoNewIlampshire, ProvincetownandYosemiteNational ParkinCalifornia.In1919,responding toaNewYorkTimesad,theyrenteda summercottageinStonington,Maine, wherethevsawmuchofJolinMarin, whostimulatedWilliam'scareer-long interestinwatercolorwork.

In1922theZorachswereintroduced totheGeorgetownarea,southof Bath,bvsculptorCastonI«ichaisc andhiswife,Isabel,whoalreadyhad aplacethere.ThenextyeartheZorachs purchasedtheearly19th-centuryJohn Biggshouseand100acresonpic¬ turesqueBobinhoodCove;theysum¬ meredtherefortherestoftheirlives.

Todaytheirhandsomeoldhouse,with itsmagnificentviewsdownalawntothe cove,isoccupiedbytheirdaughter-inlawPeggy,widowofTcssimZorach.Ihe interiorisstilldecoratedwithMar¬ guerite'sstenciledwalldesignsand murals.ArtworksbvbothZorachs-paintings.watercolorsandsculpture-further enliventheambience.
