Myfather’sfirstwifediedin1917in Portlandwhiletheywerestilllivingin rentedapartmentsattheLafayetteIlotcl. Subsequently, he met and married (June 1920)mymother,Rose'Tyler,anoted Portlandconcertsinger,whowasatthat timesingingin,Ibelieve,theStateStreet CongregationalChurch.Theyvvere married in the Cumberland Eorcsidc HouseaswasnotedinthePortlandpaper atthetime.

Unfortunately,mymotherdiedgiving birthtomeonJanuary2.1922.Afterthat mvfathercontinuedtoownthehouse.

in1920.ShewasunderrepairatPearl1larborwhenitwas attackedhutsurvivedandservedasamine-layingvesselin WorldWarII.Shewasfinallysoldforscrapin1946.

’HiefifthPrehle, notcommissioneduntil1960,wasanother productoftheBathIronWorks.Sheservedinascriesof diverseoperationsforthenext30years,includingmissile practiceandrescuemissions.In1991thePrehleassistedina humanitarianreliefeffortfortheIraqiKurds.Laterthatyear shewasdecommissionedatNorfolk,Virginia,andsoldfor scraptoaBrownsville,Texas,firmforjust$85,000soonafter. Shewasn’tactuallydismantleduntilearlv2002.Numerous itemsfromtheship,includingportholes,hatchcovers,and sound-poweredtelephones,areavailableatauctiononeBay.

Membersofthecrashsiteteamagreedthatwhile atthecrashsiteaKoreansoldierwhohadbeenin thehelicopterreportedhehadseenoneAmerican andtwoKoreansrunningdownthehillfromthe crashsite.NoU.S.bodieswerefounddownthehill; allofthemwerefoundatthetopofthehillwhere thecrashoccurred.

“Ilewasawonderfulguv,asmartguv, andahandsomedevil,”saysEd.

Steverecalls:“1herewasanactive searchforthreedaysandthenperiodicallvafterthat.Thevknewthelikelihood offindingthemwasslim.Itchangedmv mother.Shediedacoupleyearsago,but shewasneverabletoburvthis.

“Mvfondestmemories?Ithinkthe timeswehadasafamily.Weareabig IrishCatholicfamily.Therewereso manyHanlevsintownIthink1wasin highschoolbeforeIrealizedtherewere otherpeopleintown,”saysSteve.“We lovedtogocamping,hunting,and fishing.Terry’sfavoritespotwasin Dennysvillc,rightontheDenny’sRiver withourgrandfather.Theywerevery close.Mostofthetimewestavedaround Gardiner.Wewouldallchipintobina jeep,fixitup,andgooutfishing.”

Inalettertohisgrandfather,Terrv writes.“Unlesswewatchandmakeuseof eachminute,[theminutes]slipbylike thesalmonintheriverandaresoon gone.Ithinkthatyouhavenotlettoo manypasswithoutnotingthem.Yourlife hasbeenfull;1onlvhopethatminecan beequalinrichness...'I’hetimeswehad arcthemostpreciousofmvyoungerdays, but how mam more I might have had. AviationCompany,17thAviationGrouponan extractionmissioninIxios.Thehelicopterwasto extractaSpecialforcesI-ongRange ReconnaissancePatrol(LRRP)inAttopeuProvince. Asthehelicopterwasliftingfromtheextraction zonewithfourmenattachedhyMcGuirerigs,they werereceivingheavyvolumesofenemyfire. Whenthehelicopterreachedanaltitudeof400 feet,gunfirehittheengine andthehelicopterbeganfalling.'Piepilotswere abletoslowthedescentsomewhatbyautorotation, butsurvivorsoftheincidentreportedthatafterthe helicopterwashit,itbounced,twistedandcameto restburningonitsrightside.

Thecrewmemberslostconsciousnessandregain consciousnessjustasthepilotandcopilotwere draggingtheapparentlylifelessbodsof1luntlev frombeneaththehelicopter.Whilethevweredoing this,theywereknockeddownbytheexplosionof thehelicopterandhadtostoptheirattemptsto rescuethedoorgunner.

Becauseofintenseenemyactivitv,noflirther attemptsweremadetorccmerIluntlev,anditwas assumedthathisbodywasconsumedbvtheblazing aircraft.HewaslistedasKilled.Bodsnot Recovered,ssithastrongprobabilitythattheenemy knowshisfate. 1^.

AnotherNAILforwardAirController(alsoa PrairielurePAC)wasinthevicinityandheard Mosiello'sbeeper.HenotifiedAI3CCC,andthe 56thSOWofthesituation.Mystaffand1werein immediatecontactwiththeTUOCat56tK^ 4 includingtheWingCORAsIwastoldbyTUOC, the37thARRSoutofDanangsentaJollytothe crashsitefortherescue.Sandysfromthe56thwere alsoonstationtoprovidesupport.TheHH53was inahoverapproximately150'aboveSFC’ Mosiello's|xjsition.AnNVAfiredanRPC.intothe rotorheadofthehelo,whicliroller!over,and crashedinafireball.Nobeeperscameup,andall wereassumedtohaveperishedinthatcrash.The SuperJollyhadindeedbeenlaunchedtodothe rescueofSandersandMosiello.Duetothe classificationoftheSOGmission,itisvenlikely the'official'versionhadbeenalteredtoprotectthe truenatureofbothmissions.IheOV10was definitelyshotdownBEbOREthe1II153.

RightonRoute4bySmall’sKails.Iwas going toward Rangely and he was headed forPensacola.Thefallswereontheleft. Wecouldhearthemaswetalked.I remember1wasdrivinga1959green Chevyhnpala.1IcwasaNavalOfficer, ontopoftheworld.I’dbeenawayfora whilemyselfandwasreturninghometo visitmy'family.”

Titischancemeetingwasthelasttime McLaffcrtywouldsechisfriend,though neithercouldknowitatthetime.

"Wegrewuptogether,\\1tenwewereat Rangelev'11igh,Iwasaseniorandhewas afreshman.Wewereespeciallygood friends.Wedidtheusualstuff,even thoughhewasyoungerthanIwas.We wentonsomedoubledates.

McLafferty remembers Tay lor, who wasnottall,asaplaymaker,“aguard orforward.

Noteverythingwasbasketballinthis smalltown,though.”McLaffcrtyrecalls.

“Wedgooutcamping.Thelastthingwe didtogetherwhenIwasasenior,wewent out camping on Saddleback Mountain, outontheAppalachianTrail.”

Taylor graduated from Rangely High School in 1958 and went to Wentworth Institute,anarchitecturalschoolin Boston.AfterfinishingatWentworth,he enlistedintheNavy.

“Heenlisted...asaregularsailorand wenttoGreatLakesNavybase...but theyfoundouthe’dgraduatedfrom collegeandsenthimdowntoflight schoolinPensacola,Florida.TTienfrom PensacolahewenttoSanDiego.Itwas anothernavalairbase.Thenhemust havepickedupacarrierandgoneout toVietnam.

“NeilgotengagedrightafterPensacola. Idon'trememberthegirl’sname.I believeshewasfromRangelyoriginally.” Onceoverseas,Taylorwasslatedtofly missionsintheA4D-oneoftheNavy’s smallerattackjets.AsMcLaffertypoints out,itwasthesameplaneSen.John McCainflewwhileintheservice,and theplanethattheBlueAngelsusedto show off at air shows. , “IhadwrittentoNeilinSeptember,but

theletterwasreturnedunopened.I thoughtI’dputonthewrongaddress.My parentstoldme[later]hewasMIA." Edward Joseph Darcy and 10 additional crew members were lost whentheiraircraftfailedtoreturn from a propaganda mission on June 19,1967.Asearchandrescueeffort was initiated. “Several IM Phantoms were launched to sunev the area

south of the last known rejmrted position. The weather turned bad. The front moved in as expected and thel‘4scouldnotseeathingonthe ground.Afterseveralattempts,the search was given up. The crew of 11 was declared missing in action,” according to Colonel John GargusfRet.).

In1978thestatusofthecrewwas changed from MIA Io KIA. However, theaircraftwasnotdiscovereduntil 1991, when villagers of Phu Xmig notifiedofficialsofacrashsightin theirarea.AyearlateraU.S.Aietnam teaminvestigatedthesiteand recoveredevidencewhichanalvsislater indicatedweretheremainsofall11 crew members. The remains of these men, including Darcy, were finally returnedtotheirfamiliesinlate2000.

We aremostgratefultothe POW Setwork,who openedtheirdatabasetousforthesestories. Thereitwas,muchas1remembered it.Anarrowcurveofrocky, seaweed-strewnbeach,protected fromthehillforceoftheoceanwaxeson onesidebyathinstripofwooded peninsulaand,straightahead,bya narrow,uninhabitedisland.Itwasn’t much of a swimming beach, though in thesummerandearlyfalldivers sometimessetoutfromit,theirgoggled eyesandwetsuitsmakingthemseem morefroglikethanhuman.

TheprevioustimesI’dvisitedI’dbeen with my grandmother. We had clamberedovertherockstillwe’dfounda suitablyflatone.Thenwehadsetoutour cushionsandsketchpads,ourpaintsand jarsofwater,andmadeourselves comfortablefortheafternoon.

AsIsloweddownthecarandgazedat thisonce-familiarplace,Icouldeasily imagineherasshehadbeenthen:small

butindomitable,seatedsquarelyonher trustycushion,withherthinlegsintheir loose,earth-coloredslacksbracedonthe rocks.Shewouldstareoutatthescene beforeher,hereyesshieldedfromthe sunbyanancientstrawhatandpaleframedsunglasseslikebug’seyes,taking inthelinesofrocks,thelightandcolors, the mood. Then she would pick up a brush,stretchouthergnarledrighthand, andwithgraceful,practicedmovements swiftlyandsurelyrecordherimpressions, hervisionsofbeauty’fortheday’. Flippingovertheoldpage,Isatwitha cleanwhitesheetbeforeme, contemplatingwhat1shouldtrynext. 1glancedoverthebeach,itsscattered rocksanddiscardedseaweed,then acrossthewatertothesolitary-looking island.Butitwasthechildrenwhodrew myattention.Theyweresplashing slowlythroughtheshallowwaves,bent oxerlikericefarmers,obliviousnowto thesharpstonesandice-coldwater. Occasionally, one would reach down andpickupafoundobject,examining itcloselybeforeshovingitcarefullyinto apocketorreturningittoitshome. Theywerenolongerjustcitykidsor Pokemonexperts:theyweretreasure hunters,intentandcurious,admirersof nature’sinventions.Mygrandmother’s progeny,afterall.

Ibegantosketch,myhandmoving confidentlyacrossthepage.Againand againIglancedupatmytwosubjects, thendownattheimagetakingshape undermycrayon.AhalfhourlaterIset downthecrayon,satisfied.
