toEdwinwhenwewerealone.IIestared atme,notunderstanding.“Liveislearn, son,andlearnislive.”"Firerainmademe yell,butIthinkhegotit.Westep-glided tocatchup.

Eachmanwasbentdoublewithiceby thetimewereachedthelake.Two droppedtheirpacksandbegansearching forthecabin,oneeastandtheotherwest alongtheshoreofthelake.Itwaspitch black,buteastfoundit.andyoushoukla hearduscheer.

Weburstintothatcamplikearushof logsthroughthenarrows.Theairinside wascolderthantherainbecauseitwas stale.Wethrewopentheshutters,leftthe doorwideopen,andbuiltabig-assfirein thefirepit.

Loggingcampswerebuiltintheway welearnedfromtheIndians:long houses,withlowroofsandanarrow crackatthetop.

rFhesideswerelinedwithtableswe calledbunks,andafirepitrandown throughmostofthemiddleofthecamp.

Therewasplentyofdrvwoodinside, andwesavednonethinkingof tomorrow.Thefiresoonleaptalmostto theceiling.Weclosedthedoorsand shuttersandshuckedallourclothes exceptourskiwies.

Wehungeverything,includingthe packswithalloursupplies,onhooksand branchesfromtheceiling.Asthewater went,thesteamcame.Wewereina steamhouse.Couldn’tseeourhandsin frontofourfaces,butitwaswarmand

Apersonwillneverknowthegleejust comfortcanbringunlesstheyhavebeen profoundlyuncomfortableforaverylong time.Wewerekiddies,withwarmthour newtoy,laughingandsingingsongs. EvenEdwinjoinedafterawhile.Funny thinghere:EdwinReedkneweven singleriversongbyheart,eventheone abouthowJacquesBoullierodefrom MillinockettoBangor,nevertouching land.Tliatoneneverhappened,butit wasagoodsong,andJacqueswasgood enough,somaybehecoulddoitifhe hadto.Yup,thatwarmsteamdrovetired rightoutofourskins.

/ksourclothesgotdrier,thetired camebackstrongerthanever.We crawledontothebunksandstarted fallingofftodreamland.

Edwinwasthefirstoutthedoorand stoodalmostnakedinthepour¬ ing,coldrain,holdinghiswatch. Soonwewereallstandingthere,some hairless,andcryinginpainwhenthe coldraintouchedtheburns.

'Ilienextshelterwastwomilesacross theiceandtenmilesupSandyRiver. Weshouldhavebeenrunningtowardsit, butourbackswerefreezingandour frontswerewarmfromtheburning camp.Withouttalkingaboutit,weall juststoodthereturningcirclesuntilthe campwasashesanddawnsneakedin undertherain.

“Wdiatshouldwedo?”askedEdwin. Jacquessneered.“Foldyabeforedatwe burneddabridge,boy.Wedowhatwe alwayswasgonna.WegotoSandyand drivethelogs.”
